Derek Trucks Band 1996 video

Just watching some of this freaking amazingness. Nescafe Blues fest 1996. Pre - Mike Mattison, pre - Kobi.
It looks to me like Derek has a guitar pick wedged between the knuckles of his picking hand. What up with that?

Derek said in an interview he used to stick the pick there when he wasn't using it and it would eventually go flying, so he just stopped using picks completely.

I saw that early dTb lineup once at Music Midtown 1995...I didn't realize who was in the band beyond Derek at that point.
I believe the second guitarist in this vidoe is Larry Oates and keyboardist/vocalist is Ron Volker (Zambi found this info a couple years ago on HTW). This 1996 show must have been right before Bill McKay joined the band on keys and Oates & Volker departed.
McKay was with the band from 1996-2000. dTb did two keyboardist for a year in 1999-2000 when Kofi joined. McKay departed when Javier Colon joined on lead vocals & percussion summer 2000. That lineup last through 2002 when Javier left when he got a record deal....when the dTb were 80% or so done with Joyful Noise album.
Mattison joined soon after in summer 2002 (great story how Derek & Mike met in person in NYC). Count M'Butu guested a lot with them in the following years and became a full member at some point.
I'm enjoying this 1996 show!

That sounds about right, Tim. Some is recollection, other is just looking at taper info on etree and Archive. Hophead knew some of those guys and had more background details that he once told me about, but I don't remember now. Rick Anton was one of the drummers before Rico joined, but I don't know the time period he was in the band. And there were at least a couple other drummers that went through during those early years.
It's also not entirely clear to me when Rico joined the band. Rico is obviously in the DTB by 5/30/96 (date of this youtube video), so you can sorta backtrack from there. And Rico was the first drummer for Bruce's Fiji Mariners when that expanded from a duo to a trio, I want to say in early 1995 and Rico toured with Bruce & Dan for several months.
Jeff Sipe also joined DTB in 1995 after he quit ARU though. That's where I get confused. I think Rico must have joined DTB when Sipe quit to do Hellborg Lane & Sipe trio. So prolly something like:
1992 - 1994 - ??
?? to early 1995 - Rick Anton
early 1995 to mid-1995 - Jeff Sipe
mid-1995 until the end - Yonrico Scott
It doesn't help that Derek's marketing/management people always start with the Bill McKay/Todd Smallie/Yonrico Scott era as the original lineup. Which really isn't true. And that's only when there is (was) ever any mention or acknowledgment of any history of that band, which was also sort of rare to begin with.

And I don't really know when the name change from Derek & the Dominators to Derek Trucks Band. I know Derek opened for ARU on 10/17/92 and my recollection is that they were using the DTB name by that point. But it is indeed a foggy recollection.
Some of the confusion about lineups could be due to what was considered to be Dominators and what was DTB.

Damn I miss this band.
