Derek on Colbert tonight?

Heard from a friend that Derek might be a surprise musical guest tonight on Colbert? Any truth to that? Can't find anything online though.

Getty images posted Derek walking into the Ed Sullivan theater for the taping tonight. Looks like it may be true.

It was great to see Derek play last night on Stephen Colbert's debut, along with Susan, Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples, and others. He even busted out a short solo and got mentioned at the end of the show. Wasn't he promoting Kendrick Lamar as the musical guest all week? I'm glad it worked out the way it did.

That was really great. I've been waiting all my life for people like Derek, Buddy, Mavis to be mainstream and here we are.

one of the most fun, coolest musical segments i've seen on a late night show dating back to the sixties.it made me recall the awesome music the Allmans played with Doc on the Carson show.
Not sure these folk are mainstream, but it's always nice to see great musicians on late night shows as they always have been!(Carson,Letterman, even Leno).

Great guitar interplay between Derek and Buddy at about 2:40! Equally cool and great to see my former fellow Alabamians Paul Janeway (St. Paul and the Broken Bones) and Britney Howard (Alabama shakes - no relation to Bluedad 😉 ) among the very talented choir!

That's the exact same feeling I got.
Derek is just so damn cool, the deference he gave to Buddy was obvious and showed such class.

Just watched again-a few thoughts:
It was great of Colbert to have such a superb first musical segment-he put his band front and center showing them great respect, and then brought in Mavia,Derek,Susan,Buddy, etc. And Colbert sang pretty well himself! everyone had great fun and the spirit really moved me.
A more somber thought-Buddy is starting to look like an aging man...played great, but seemed more withdrawn, stooped over...who knows...I worry about Buddy-perhaps I'm overreacting? Anyone else notice?
Derek seemed a bit softer than usual in the mix....maybe related to tape of actual show?

completely agree. i've followed derek's career since 1997. to see him and susan rise to where they are now is completely amazing. while i barely know them, it feels like two friends who have made it big.

they certainly command and have earned great musical respect by those with good taste(like us) 😉

It was groovy!

Don't worry about Buddy Guy.
We saw him in June and he was as energized as he's ever been.

Loved it.
Susan should donate that lace dress to Goodwill. It looks like something a 5 year old girl would wear on Easter.

That was fun.

Love it!!! A video for the ages as years pass, we will look back on those that have left us.....and how they came together for a unique jam where the chorus really was "We Got To Live Together"!!! Sly! 1960s! Redux and forever!

There's a great shot in the beginning of the video of George Clooney standing backstage watching them jam....right as Susan walks out. Anyone else catch it?

Enjoyed it, but, being selfish, I wish I could have heard more from Derek -- there were so many musicians up there it became a free-fall, albeit a fun one.
Also, I'm curious about something -- why were Derek and Susan selected for this? Is Colbert or maybe his producer big Derek and/or ABB fans? There are a million talented pickers and singers out there who are better known to the general public (although not as good, of course), so does anybody know why they were picked for the first show?

Probably because of Jon Batiste.

I think TTB played some shows with Mavis recently - it was billed on Colbert as Mavis & Friends......

Now, that was really cool. So much talent, young and old, on one stage.

Great talent and they flat out rocked one of my favorite Sly Stone songs. Awesome.

Because he's such a musical force, it's easy to forget that Buddy Guy is 79 years old. I saw him perform a few weeks ago, which was the day after his 79th birthday, and he put on a solid, high energy show. Didn't walk through the crowd this time, but that was okay with me. I love his intensity, both in his singing and guitar playing.
And yes, it was a thrill to see Derek on a mainstream television show, and prominently too!
It reminded me of when he sat in with Paul Shaffer on the Letterman Late Show several years ago, during one of the Beacon runs. (I have that on VHS somewhere...)

Who would've thought that our favorite musicians, minus Warren would be included in such a mainstream event. This was really cool of Steven Colbert and he has risen in the respect department in my opinion. So cool to see this music carried on, even if it only registers' with our collective audience.
