Watching Derek Trucks sit in with Trey Anastasio's Band at LOCKN. It is being streamed for free at relix.com/live all weekend. I think Trey is sitting in with TTB tomorrow night.

So far it has been very enjoyable...... Grin Grin Grin

Trey looked like a deer caught in headlights at times. Would love to see some musicians around Derek that push him. Song they did with Susan was nice.

It's still available on YouTube, at least for now...

"SO much better than anything Derek has done in the last few years."

I don't even hate TTB as much as some people here, but I have to agree. Derek was on fire and in command of his arsenal last night. For years I have been preaching patience, assuring people that eventually Derek would do a project with more fire-breathing guitar heroics. I just didn't expect it to be with Trey.

"Trey looked like a deer caught in headlights at times. Would love to see some musicians around Derek that push him. "

I actually thought that was the first time I've seen Trey play with Derek where he didn't seem overmatched. I would still give Derek the edge, and he totally killed it last night, but Trey kept up pretty well. They have such different styles, which makes for an interesting dynamic where they can both cut loose without really stepping on each other's toes.

The best thing about this is that it wasn't just a song or two, it was a whole set, which gave them time to get warmed up and find some chemistry. By about halfway through the set, once they had gotten used to each other, Derek and Trey were playing off each other really nicely and doing some amazing things together.

Tonight it's Trey on Derek's home turf, so to speak, let's see if he can rise to the occasion. Derek certainly did last night and elevated the show.

That was cool. I have come to enjoy the fun of a Phish show but always felt when Trey sat in with the ABB he couldn’t really keep up or add to the mix the way a Scofield, Frampton or Hidalgo would or even other instruments like Brecker, Trombone Shorty, original Jukes horns. I think it pushes him beyond his sweet spot. None the less they were having fun and it sounded good and nice to see Derek cut loose some more.

I joined in on the TTB stream late tonight; they did the whole Layla album with Trey as the second set (did they do Thorntree in the Garden? Hm) and I got on during the 3rd song.

Derek was driving the train for sure. For sure. Do you remember when this guy used to be stoic and motionless on stage?!?!?!?!

Seriously, it is a remarkable contrast. He was using his body English tonight to guide the show, and that included drawing Trey into digging harder. Derek was leaning right into him, and Trey did step up his game, notably on da blues. They had a blast. And what a sublime coda on Layla.

Derek is the man. His tone was so fat, his attack was so pure, it was ON. Trey is a great player, but at times, he has a bit of the processed sound in his tone, whereas Derek's sound is as pure as it gets. Actually, Susan and Doyle also have very pure tone too.

What I ended up thinking about at the end of the show is how strong of a guitar player Dickey Betts is. Here is why:
Tonight, Derek was dipping into his Duane bag in the best of possible ways. His sound was so on that it was a force of nature. As generous as he is in sharing solos, he was the magnetic force all night. (It was the choice of material in part; that album is in his body and soul. Maybe if they had done a Zappa album, the mojo would have been more evenly distributed tonight. No human can touch Derek on that Dominoes material) As excellent as Trey is, Trey could not help taking a back seat overall. He did not cut loose a whole lot, and he didn't always get his volume up. He often deferred to Derek because Derek was clearly just hitting the note. So, I am sure that Duane was just like that, a driving force in the room. Any excellent player might have been just a bit musically quieter when playing with Duane. But Dickey Betts went toe to toe with Duane with great confidence and fire. He played solos that were just as full of fire as Duane's. Dickey's soul, his heart, his swagger, his melodies, and his chops put him right there at the pinnacle with Duane. Amazing.

Back to the show tonight: It is funny that Derek's youth and youthful looks have often been a talking point or even an identifier for Derek. His stoic onstage nature contributed to that. He's been The Kid.

I think he is now an elder statesman. That dude was the Authority tonight for sure.

Quick notes: Susan rocked, a force of joy and passion, especially on the Les Paul. Derek did briefly play that Gold Top. It was my first glimpse of the new TTB bassist and keyboardist, who were great. There were no horn solos in the second set; they stayed very close to the sound of the Layla album. Quite a treat!! I need to go find the first set.

Great review JimSheridan. Love your thoughts on Dickey...right on and well said. My goodness what a team effort...incredible. 1: ‘I am Yours’ was sublime. 2 . I love Alecia Shakur 3. Derek has no equal

It was on the jam on the end of one of the songs - maybe "Anyday"? - that Derek was pushing for a Blue Sky jam. He teased at some of the Blue Sky licks for sure.

I missed the webcast last night, I went to the Fox with my wife for the Revivalists, which was actually a pretty fun show.

I am catching up right now online, and Derek and Trey just melted my face on Keep On Growing. Even if the whole thing isn't that good, I'm already sold on this set.

I know we have varying degrees of Trey fandom on this site, but any Derek fan should also watch the Trey set from Friday night, if only to see Derek. This weekend has been a master class by Derek and will probably be up there with the greatest things he has ever done.

yep
I haven't seen last night's yet, but Derek with TAB was great. He added so much to those tunes. As Trey said, Derek is the best guitar player on the planet, but Trey was not blown off the stage.

Can't wait to see / hear last night.

Do you feel that learning an entire show's worth of another musician's music and then effectively becoming an adjunct band member for the night and expected to enhance it doesn't qualify as being pushed?

Derek was channeling in this show. As good as I've seen any performance by him. Duane and Eric would be proud. Trey was holding on for dear life, but did hold on. I like Trey a lot

I streamed the TAB set Friday night with some friends and thought Derek owned it.

Watching the Layla set right now and it's just absolutely beautiful.

The one thing that stuck out to me besides everyone playing great.....was that, at no point, was it not incredibly clear who the man was on that stage. It was like watching Jordan at a Dream Team practice. Damn that guy has reached full ninja status.

Watched the Layla set last night. Just amazing. Somewhere in Tell The Truth it hit a level that very few artists can touch. Made me long for a Derek and Trey band.

I know Susan gets a lot of grief on here, but the only problem I had with that show is how they divided up the vocals. It felt like she had to have a verse on every song. Trey had the Clapton laid back vocal delivery down, they ahould have let him do the full vocals on sobgs like Bell Bottom Blues and I Looked Away. They switched out lead vocalists mid song too much especially on songs where there was only one lead vocalist, not on songs like Anyday which have two.

I enjoyed the mixing up the vocals. It kept it from being a "tribute band" show. Trey did sound a lot like Clapton of that era. Mattison was great and got a lot time. Gabe Dixon was good on his lead/duo vocal. And I though Susan nailed her vocals too.

Talking about Dickey going toe to toe with Duane Allman. I'm in my 70's now but will never forget the originial ABB. They could lock in and just smoke a song. Dickey had a different tone and his own style but was never timid Dickey was intimated by Duane at all. All 6 of them had no fear. Supposedly Duane stopped playing and both he and Dickey felt intimidated when they noticed Eric Clapton on the front row of a Florida show. But that was just for a minute. That led to Duane being invited to the Layla sessions and later Clapton inviting Duane to join the Dominos.

Dickey wasn't intimidated by Warren Haynes either. In 1989, 90, 91 and 92, Dickey not only stood toe to toe with Warren, but on many songs smoked Warren if you wanted to play the competition game but Dickey and Duane Allman were opposed to multiple guitar players on stage together trying to out do each other. It was unhealthy and could ruin things and create jealous feelings that could poison the band. By the mid 90's to me, Warren was bringing it a little better than Dickey at most of the shows I saw. Warren didn't step on the gas and up his game, it was Dickey letting his game slip. Gregg and Butch noticed it and said it was Dickey's drinking and substance abuse. Gregg actually was worse then Dickey by 1995 and Gregg talks about how sloppy drunk he was even on stage by the time they were inducted into the hall of fame.

The shows I saw in 1997 after Jack joined saw Dickey getting his mojo going again. He and Jack both were smoking hot at a 1997 show I saw in Raleigh. Dickey was also hot the first year Derek was in the band. I saw them in 1999 in Las Vegas and Dickey Betts was pushing Derek Trucks and on some songs left more smoke on the stage than Derek. Derek mentioned later in the 2000s that after the summer 1999 run, Dickey, some nights, just couldn't bring it. But when he was really on Derek claimed he couldn't touch him and mentioned a Blue Sky solo that was the damndest thing he had ever heard.

I enjoyed seeing them do the Layla album last night. Derek and Susan was real fine.

First off allow me to say I am a TTB devotee. My wife and I have seen them about 20 times, unfortunately not in the last three years having relocated to south Texas where there is no live music. Travel to Austin is at least 6.5 hours away. Having been fans of both the DTB and STB we have a whole big bunch of live shows under our belts. Fell in love with the DTB opening for Hot Tuna before Kofi was in the band. Any how, now to the point, we've enjoyed the Derek and Trey combo. More to the point, I think Derek's playing changed dramatically subsequent to the tour with Eric Clapton. Seems Eric imparted upon Derek the way to attract fans and I am not suggesting, remotely, that was a bad thing. We both miss the electrifying and jazz influenced way that Derek played years ago. It was good to see him challenged by another player and step out of his normal routine. However, he is and will remain a guitar player of renowned respect and talent. I do not, in any way shape or form, mean to react negatively to anyone who is not onboard with my assessment. Music is a wonderful thing and everyone is entitled to their opinion. It is my utmost hope that people can just enjoy and groove to the tunes in whatever format they are able to enjoy.

Saw both shows with Derek and Trey.
These were fantastic shows.
My wife and I both felt these were the best shows we’ve seen since the Allmans last show.
The D&D shows blew our minds and warmed our hearts.

Really glad you got to see those shows, dadof2. I so wish I could have been there, but had other plans.

I know a lot of folks here aren't big Trey/Phish fans, but I think Trey held his own really well last weekend by any standard. As a Phish/Trey fan it warms my heart to see a lot of people who have been critical of Trey in the past really enjoying this collaboration with Derek.

I would encourage anyone who was intrigued by Trey this weekend to check out his recent Ghosts Of The Forest project. It's a sort of concept album about his best friend dying of cancer. I think Phish gets knocked a lot around here for stupid lyrics that are full of stoner cliches and nonsense, but this is by far the most mature songwriting Trey has ever done. Some of it is depressing, given the subject matter, but I find it very impressive and another sign of Trey's late-career renaissance.

So glad that Trey kicked his bad habits and got himself together so we can enjoy all the wonderful music he has been cranking out recently.

I am one of those anti-Phish heads, Rob. The only time I saw Trey before was sitting in with the Allman's at the Beacon. He was good but not especially impressive.

Of the two Lockin shows, I actually preferred the Trey set with Derek. The two of them played beautifully together, and there was a lot more Derek-Trey duo time in the TAB set than the DAD.

The fans of the DTB have always hoped for something like a Derek-Jimmy Herring project, but Derek-Trey would be fine.

BIGV-based on your comments about Susan in many other threads,I was with you feeling Susan was more screamer than singer with ttb.
Although I appreciated her singing before ttb when she was with her solo band.
You may not enjoy her voice at all and that’s your definitive opinion.
However in my limited perspective Susan has adjusted excellently to playing with a very large band and the screaming has ceased. I enjoy her voice with TTB a lot now although I’m not a huge fan of the material (other than some covers).
In this work with Trey the verses she took were solid and Trey had inflections of EC but seemed weak of voice at times, and Susan and Mike did great singing as well.
In addition Susan’s guitar playing was stellar.
I guess I’m open to listening and this time the pay off was huge:three entities I wasn’t fond of-ttb,Susan and Trey-well these shows were awesome and all three were tremendous.
Sometimes approaching music, particularly in this limited genre, in a rigidly negative way can miss the huge payoffs.A willingness to truly listen helps you notice musical evolutions.

Both Lockn sets really really rock!
Balm for the rock n roll souls.

Haven't watched the video so can't comment on who's making eyes at who.
Thought the blend of voices -singers and players was just stellar,

Trey sounds almost creepily like Clapton at times,
I did an aural double take

https://relix.com/blogs/detail/trey-anastasio-on-derek-trucks-without-question-my-favorite-guitar-player/

“I did get a chance to play with Tedeschi Trucks, and we’re going to play together at LOCKN’. I’m really excited,” Anastasio begins, referring to the time he sat in with Trucks’ Tedeschi Trucks Band at New York’s Beacon Theatre in October 2017. (Anastasio has also played with Trucks in other incarnations, including at Florida’s Wanee Festival with the Allman Brothers Band back in 2014.)

“Derek is without question my favorite guitar player and, I think, the best guitar player on Earth right now,” Anastasio continues. “When Derek came along—I saw him first when he was young—I loved his playing so much that…I almost wanted to write him a thank-you note. He made me believe in the guitar as a serious instrument again, and he affected the way I play. I’m playing better because of Derek Trucks. “

Fair points and thanks for sharing. Honesty and my own perceptions and feel for the music are what I have. When Susan just sings, I like her voice...My "Gripe" is and has always been that I don't feel that a large "Orchestra" type of rock ensemble plays to her strengths. I do agree that the interplay between Trey and Derek is outstanding here and would love to here more. Susan's guitar playing when kept to "Very simple" fills can compliment her vocals nicely. As a guitar player though I do not feel she has the chops to contribute to any of the cuts, not in the least. Her guitar input seems almost mandatory merely because she has one strapped on. But on other points we agree....

I watched the whole show again last night for the second time. Just as magical as the first time. What a celebration of music!!! I really enjoyed they way they arranged the songs / distributed vocals and solos.

The show really heats up and builds in power as it goes on, climaxing perfectly with "Layla." I can see why they skipped "Thorn Tree."
