From 11 Dec Boston Globe:

At just 35, Derek Trucks has had a career comparable to that of an elder statesman. A child prodigy on the electric guitar, Trucks spent his formative years opening for, and later playing in, the legendary Allman Brothers Band — of which his uncle, Butch Trucks, was a founding member and drummer. That group recently dissolved after a farewell tour: “It was a really good way to go out,” Trucks said, referring to the band’s final concert. Today, his main focus is Tedeschi Trucks Band, the Grammy-winning group he formed with wife Susan Tedeschi, a Massachusetts native. As he and his bandmates prepare for two shows at the House of Blues this weekend, Trucks told us about five of his favorite female vocalists.

Mahalia Jackson: “She is just one of those once in a generation voices and talents. She was in a lot of ways the voice of the civil rights movement even before it happened. . . . That was also one of me and Susan’s first connections — she’s a big Mahalia Jackson fan.”

Aretha Franklin: “There’s a gospel record of her and her dad in a church in California. It’s live, it’s in the moment, it’s an amazing performance.”

Nina Simone: “She can wring the meaning out of a tune like nobody else. Often we’re on the bus after the shows, and there’s a lot of music being played. A lot of times Nina will close the show. She will be the last thing you listen to before going to bed.”

Susan Tedeschi: “I’ve never witnessed someone live and in person throw it down like Susan does. . . . I’ve seen her on stage with a lot of singers, and it’s usually not a fair fight.”

Abida Parveen: “An amazing, amazing singer. It’s Pakistani classical music, kind of — Qawwali, it’s called. The amount of control she has over her voice, I’ve never heard anything like it.”

Thanks for the link and article. Nice to see Derek mentioning Nina Simone. And his quote: "“She can wring the meaning out of a tune like nobody else.": Oh, so true. Everytime i hear her fantastic rendition of "Backlash Blues" i get choose bumps and/or a lump in my throat.
