More like Stoner Country. Long story short, NRPS and few other groups invented country rock.

NRPS emerged from the San Francisco rock scene 1969-70 around the time of Workingmans Dead. Garcia did stellar pedal steel on NRPS, they and the Dead and a handful of others, notably first to rock the country was Gram Parsons, Byrds, Stones, all started country rock, not as "alt-country" but a country spinoff of the psychedelic rock of the day.

You can't go wrong with their first record, N.R.P.S. An all time classic. A great standout track is "Henry" about smuggling weed up from Mexico - Goin to Acapulco gonna turn those golden keys . . . :

Yes, along w/Flying Burrito Bros & others, helped put the ‘country’ into country rock - love Home, Home on the Road - their song Lonesome LA Cowboy, from Panama Red - lost track of em after Powerglide - Great band - had big early exposure touring w/the Dead - in the same way that Tucker did touring w/the ABB, Skynyrd opening for The Who etc

These guys were the pioneers of stoner cowboy rock well before the others mentioned here, also including Commander Cody and Pure Prairie League.

yep Glendale Train smokes. That whole first NRPS record is the best country rock album ever recorded by my lights.

Certainly NRPS were country rock pioneers before Commander Cody and Pure Prairie League, way before Eagles. NRPS was 1969 come up out of SF at the tail end of first wave, after Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo 1968 (regarded as the first country rock record ever), and Poco 1968. Stones had some country rockers on Let It Bleed 1969 and Beggars Banquet 1968

Doubt it but ya never know. Guaranteed lots of that highflyin pedal steel tho! Just pre-ordered a copy - this really does look like an amazing set. 5 cds of goodness for 40 clams. Cheap!

Yeah, Buddy Cage certainly carried NRPS to another level, far surpassing Garcia's unschooled psychedelic pedal steel. However, Garcia certainly knew enough about good steel to recruit Cage as his replacement when he left NRPS.

Sounds like you know your pedal steel - you familiar with Sneaky Pete Kleinow? Absolutely phenomenal .

Not downplaying Garcias steel at all "Dirty Business" was one of the most fantastic things I ever heard. He was just dabbling tho. Said himself he gave it up it would take a lifetime to master.

For sure -NRPS was good good times, we all got to play cowboys and indians for a while there,

The “official” NRPS opened my first Dead show, 11/11/71, Atlanta Municipal Auditorium, 2weeks after Duane’s accident.

The David Nelson Band is carrying the torch a little but they seem to only play the west coast.

This is an interesting thread. I knew of them, knew there was a Garcia connection, but never know much about them. As in, what genre did they go in? So I bought one of their CDs and still couldn't really figure it out. I guess at times people try to put a particular artist / band into a particular classification.

Anyway, I found the Pure Prairie League comments interesting. I always thought of them as a 70s light rock radio band. That was my only exposure to them anyway.
