Man bummer, sorry to see this. Faces, Stones. Tough couple of days for the Stones family. Of course I loved his appearance with the Warren Haynes Band as well.

What a bummer! I saw him only last July (2013) up north of San Francisco at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley. What a sweeeeeet man indeed.

Talked to him in the lobby after the show, I told him I saw The Faces in '72 at The Hollywood Palladium. I reminded him how hard the band had blown the roof off. He totally remembered the show! "Oh yes, it was the only time we played there. There was a big party afterwards, we did all kinds of drink and blow. Dylan was there, he was the first one to arrive and last one to leave."

The link above is something I shot that night. For about half the show Ian had a bass player only with him.

Bummer.

I heard Ian on NPR a couple of years ago being interviewed about his book. I remember two stories particularly well:

While playing pool and drinking (heavily) with Mick Jagger, they discussed Ian's payment for playing on a song on a Stones album. Ian said he'd accept SIXTEEN thousand dollars. Jagger, "who wasn't a very good drinker, while I was a professional drinker..." heard Ian say SIXTY thousand dollars. "We're not giving you sixty thousand..." started Mick. By the end of the pool game, Jagger had conceded to pay SIXTY thousand - the sum he thought Ian had asked for.

The Grateful Dead offered Ian the cursed job of keyboardist with their band. Ian reluctantly accepted but hated the idea because he hated the music of the Grateful Dead - but needed the money. "I like music with a tune ... a singer", said Ian. At some point, some other offer came his way (Stones or Faces tour - I forget) and Ian didn't have to take the gig he didn't want.

The Faces were one of the most colorful and interesting bands ever. What a cast of players!

Here's hoping Ian finds Bobby Keys in the afterlife.

Had the pleasure of interviewing Mac for our very own Hittin' The Note recently: http://www.hittinthenote.com/IanM-Nov14.asp

I'd waited 40-something years to tell that man how he'd spun my head around in the best of ways when I was a teenager ... and in the end he thanked me. We laughed almost as much as we talked - and Mac laughed at himself more than anything.

Remember: whenever you can, give 'em flowers while they can still smell 'em.

Goddamn.

LONG PLAYER is my favorite album by the Faces, especially the live stuff from Fillmore East (Feel So Good; Maybe I'm Amazed), Had Me A Real Good Time, Richmond (Ronnie Lane's acoustic blues number) and a few others.

I like Ian's work with Bob Dylan on the 1984 tour (which also featured Mick Taylor on guitar), as heard on the LP "Real Live Bob Dylan."

I saw Ian in Albany NY the night before the start of the ABB October Beacon run. He was to return Dec. 19 as a part of the Nick Lowe show with Los Straitjackets. RIP Ian...

Brian's light-hearted conversation with Ian is a must-read; we're honored to have one of the last interviews that Ian ever did available on our site (www.hittinthenote.com) - please check it out; Rest in peace, Mac.

Recently bought the Stones show from '81 in Hampton and have been watching it much lately (I was at the show) and both Bobby and Ian are prominent in the vid. Will sure miss them. My buddy here was in Nashville a month or so back at a conference and met Ian. This past Saturday he mentioned to me that he emailed Ian to see if he wanted to play on his new album. Guess now I know why he didn't hear back. Bummer.

I heard replayed the past few days two interviews he recorded years ago now. An episode of "Fresh Air" on NPR from, I think, 2003. Heard it replayed yesterday. Also, Mike Marone's show on Sirius 30 The Loft from just a few years ago replayed this afternoon. Both excellent and very enjoyable.

Devastating news, especially considering the long awaited Faces reunion. I saw Ian live once, at the intimate Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta. He had so much spirit and personality and was a wonderful entertainer.

Those that don't know much about him don't need to look far to see his influence in rock music. His name as a contributing musician is all over the place - Clapton, the Stones, Dylan, Springsteen, Warren Haynes, Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams... the list goes on and on and for a reason - the guy was an ace!

RIP...
