I heard this one this morning and was floored. 52? What? I tried to get to two of the latest shows in Atlanta and couldn't pull it off. What the heck??????

Police apparently is handling this as a possible suicide. When i read that i got a horrorable flashback from the hours following the news of Butch Trucks's tragic death when those suicide rumours surfaced and later were confirmed.

RIP Chris. Very sad news indeed.

I guess Gov't Mule will be playing "Hunger Strike" at their next gig.

Very sad news. Met him a few times and was at quite a wild party with him one time. He was a real nice guy. Some friends had warned me that he could be moody but I never saw any of it.

I saw Chris on the Higher Power tour last year. he did an acoustic version with fog and awesome lighting to this song. He thought it was pretty strange and twisted (and funny )that his song got banned from FM airplay after 9-11.

I was shocked to hear about Chris, I am glad I got to witness the voice of Mr.Cornell...

Forgive me if this was already mentioned, but the acoustic type album he released fairly recently showed a side of Chris Cornell that really impressed me. I can't think of the single that got some pretty good air time on radio. I really liked it and from what I gather, the album itself really high lighted what an all around talented musician he really was.

No one probably remembers this, but many years ago Van Halen was rumored to be working on an album with multiple singers and Chris Cornell was a name mentioned. That combination seriously intrigued me....I always wondered what that would have been like....Fast forward many years and the tune he recently sang on for the Zach Brown Band kind of comes close in my imagination.....

By far. He and Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain all had incredible voices, but he was the best singer. He was the Freddie Mercury of '90s alternative: tremendous range, control, and versatility. I was listening to Outshined tonight and there's a stretch of about 20 seconds, starting at about 3:20, where he does something like this: sing>belt>croon>belt>croon>scream. It never even stood out to me that he's switching back and forth between all these different techniques because he does it so smoothly. He could wail, he could go smooth. His solo career was very up and down, but in the last few years he'd stretched himself with some really interesting covers - Nothing Compares 2 U, especially right now, is devastating - and the theme song from The Promise was new territory, too. He could be fascinating as a composer even though he was seriously up and down as a lyricist. Even though it became a cash grab cliche 10 years ago I really did want to see him do a covers album. I spent years picking songs for it.

A lot of his best songs were the singles, in my book, because they usually combined his clearest lyrics with performances that didn't totally go over the top. But here are a few:

When I'm Down

His best lyric apart from maybe Black Hole Sun. The late night, piano-with-a-drink sound is unlike anything else he did and it's one I wanted him to pursue. I've always told people that if John Lennon had written a song for Ray Charles, it would've been this.

Seasons

His first quiet song? A challenging, moody piece that works really well. This stuff was usually used as an element of a louder song, but it works so well on its own.

Fell On Black Days

You can see how Gov't Mule would do this: the subject matter and the music are pretty straightforward compared to some of the areas Soundgarden liked to explore, which means it shows off the things Cornell and the band did so well.

Black Rain

The song that proved Soundgarden was back - oh, and that after 25 years he could still crush these kinds of high notes and layer his vocals in a way his peers wouldn't have dared.

Birth Ritual

This is not Soundgarden's best song. It's kind of repetitive. But my goodness, the high notes he hits here. And he's not just-barely reaching them, either. He nails the vibrato and everything. A rare gift.

Wave Goodbye

I always thought Staley and Cantrell's harmonies were really good. Jerry Cantrell's voice combined with Lane's was a huge part of the AIC sound.

Around here people always talk about guitarists you can recognize with one note, and they both had that in spades. Cobain in particular was able to communicate enormous depths of pain and emotion while singing lyrics that didn't mean anything on the surface. He couldn't hit notes like Marvin Gaye but his voice had that type of grit and it added so much depth.

And you can see that kind of thing when they left the big guitars and noise behind and sang something closer to blues. Like Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (Nirvana) and Layne's bridge in Don't Follow (AiC)

That flat, intense harmony really set them apart. I read an interview with Cantrell a while ago where he said that was influenced by country music, which I don't think ever would have occurred to me. In that other post I meant to add that a very long time ago I saw someone compare Cornell to Levi Stubbs from the Four Tops. I didn't get it at the time, but it makes a lot of sense now.
