Caption Butch and Otiel

quote:
Al, Butch has brought most, if not all, of the grief regarding his quotes, all on by himself. So he is a bit of a player in the comments here. You wrote a book; people comment on net forums. I find it surprising a purveyor of words objects to others.Where's the LIKE button when it's really applicable?
All of the comments that I've read were in fun. Butch should have a thick enough skin to take it. God knows, he can dish it out.
Well said.
Hear, hear!

'...we were playing this shuffle, and it wasn't going anywhere...'
😛

I totally get the snarky comments and laughed at a few of them, but when I see that picture, this is what comes to mind....
Oteil: Man, this stage is so cool! Is there any better place to play music in the world?
Butch: Maybe the Beacon, or the Fillmore back in the day, but it's tough to beat this.

To clarify my own thoughts:
I do not object to any words and anyone can, of course, have and share their own thoughts.
I totally get how Butch has brought a lot of this on himself.
I understand how it looks bad for a purveyor of words to appear to objecting to others' words.
As a semi-public figure, I understand how my comments get some extra scrutiny.
I know that my comments seemed defensive of Butch.
I have no problem with Boynton or anyone else sharing a photo I took. I welcome it, actually, though prefer it be credited to me or whomever took it.
I understand the risk of sounding defensive, but it was a great performance deserving praise, not ridicule. And Butch's desire to get the ABB back together may be Quixotic, but given everyone's passion up here, I'm not sure it should be mocked rather than applauded.

Okay, how about this one Al?
Butch: Okay, Oteil -you light the bag and it's contents, I'll ring Dickey's doorbell, then we both haul a$$ into the woods!

Big fan of your book Alan but reading your response here one wonders if you have not become a little too close to your subjects to be rendering an objective opinion about whether Butch's set was great or not. You don't just " seem " defensive. If someone feels Butch performance or his behavior deserves ridicule so be it. Who are you to tell them his performance was worthy of only praise? That does not seem to be an objective position to take.

In the film, "Almost Famous", the late, great Lester Bangs was depicted telling the young writer, William (who was based on Cameron Crowe - the young writer who wrote the Rolling Stone piece about the Allman Brother's Band) that he COULD NOT BECOME FRIENDS WITH HIS SUBJECT - as that would skew, colorize or otherwise bias his writings about them.
The ABB hated the Scott Freeman book, "Midnight Riders". To me, that fact alone gave his book credence.
Just sayin' some stuff.

I have a big issue with Alan.
One Way Out should have been at least twice as long.
Fantastic book. Thank goodness he had access to the band.

Al Paul, just to clarify, I definitely should've credited you, so I apologize. I'll be sure to mention it in the future. As for my first caption, I swear that I had not heard anything negative about Butch's playing. In fact, I've always been blown away by how well he gets that engine going night in and night out. My caption was purely coincidental if people did criticize his playing. It just looked to me like Butch is irritated with Oteil so I made up the line.
Anyway, keep up the great work. I love getting an inside look at the band. All these "almost famous" criticisms sound like jealousy to me. To imply that a writer can't criticize other writers.....well I don't get the logic there.

I loved the book too. I just wish I didn't have to buy the paperback to read the last chapter. I would have rather the last chapter be included, or released electronically, or as a stand alone article.
I kind of resent having to re-purchase the book to get the last chapter.
I'm sure the publisher makes that decision as a money grab. Can't really blame them I guess.

Thanks guys.
Nothing said or done offends me except the Almost Famous quote and the concept that I was too close for the book to be honest. I'm not going to defend at length up here.
Like I said, Boynton, I have no problem with you or anyone using the pic and the caption idea was funny. Also no problem at all with that.. or with anything, specifically. I was just pointing out that at the very moment Butch pulled off something most of us though unlikely - a great set of legit ABB music - he was being mocked. That's all.
No big win for me to ever wade into such discussions, really, but I was posting up here long before One Way Out...

No, Oteil. You see, it WAS your golf cart, and now it's MY golf cart. Finders keepers!

Re-reading all the posts and captions, I can't find a single one "mocking Butch's set" at Wanee.
The way these things work: someone posts a picture, then we (readers and frequenters of this incredibly fine website) add what we think are funny captions.
Yes, Rob was right, we could write things like, "yes, this is certainly a fine venue", or "great to see you again, Oteil". But stuff like that is kinda boring.
Alan, I don't think anybody intentionally tried to offend you or Butch in any way. I honestly believe that merely questioning an author's ... possibility of being objectionable when they're friends with the subject is a completely fair literary critique (and "critique" is really much too strong a word).
Wow! I thought this was a tougher playground. 😉

Butch: Otiel, Look smart like me, Al is taking a picture.
Otiel: Al can say we were talking about Duane.
Butch: Yes, although he was over-rated
Otiel: Huh?
Butch: Just look smart like me.
Otiel: So is the hot dog stand any good?
Butch: Tell Al Duane liked hot dogs.
Otiel: Did he?
Butch: Doesn't matter, revisionist history became legal in 2001
Otiel: Huh?
Butch: I said look smart like me.
Otiel: This pic is taking a long time.
Butch: It is absolutely Dickeys fault that time takes long. I voted that time move faster, but since it was my idea, Dickey squashed it.
Otiel: Huh?
and so it went..................................

Good stuff, Tony!
