Big Replacements fan here. Their commercial peak was slammed by their fans as too slick, though I dig it, but I agree it's overproduced. Finally, we are getting a boxed set with rawer versions, some hijinks with Tom Waits, 2 CDs of a live show from 1989, and outtakes - looks great!

one of the best concerts i've ever been to. Replacements at Forest Hills NY a few years ago. Apparently it was lightning in a bottle since they imploded again soon after. I didn't really know much about them beyond the profound influence on the opening acts that I liked : Hold Steady, and Deer Tick.
They ripped through their set. It was beatlesque, stoneseque and everything in between. Hard to describe. The crowd, the weather, the sound, it was pretty much a perfect show.
Need to check this set out.

They all came from very rough backgrounds and had tough childhoods. It was almost like they felt they didn't deserve to be commercially successful. They could have been as big or bigger than REM but made horrible choices at exactly the wrong time.

I love a lot of their music.

I've been a fan of Paul Westerbergs since hearing him on the Singles movie.

I have a friend who's a big fan of the band but I haven't really lisened to anything from them... I'll need to check some out!
