Blue Sky cover

My bud Frankie and some other guy 😛

So Betts' kid and son-in-law do a cover of one of his signature tunes and nobody on an ABB fan site has anything to say about it. Wow, just wow.

Real nice version. I can dig it. Wouldn't buy it but ...

I remember this being posted when it debuted last year and there was a bit of discussion http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=XForum&file=viewthread&tid=145767#pid .
Personally I really dislike it, other than Duane's all too brief solo. Way over-produced and sounds, well, it sounds like a 1980s Tesla ballad.

If the original post or thread title had said "Dickey's son and son-in-law play 'Blue Sky,'" I would have checked it out asap. As it was, the title of the thread just said "Blue Sky cover" and the original post just said "My bud Frankie and some other guy" and i didn't realize who it was, so I just passed it by. My bad.
It definitely sounds like a labor of love. I got a kick out of him changing the lyric to "going to California" instead of "going to Carolina." I also like how they shifted the "hand-off" lick from the middle of the guitar solo to appear toward the end of the lyrics.
A bit clean and produced for my tastes, but I'm glad I checked it out.

Man I really enjoyed this. Downloaded the whole album after listening to your Blue Sky link.

Pretty lame, sounds like a Bret Michaels clone. Sounds like it was produced for the current country radio market.

Not gonna trip on folks likin' it or not, music is subjective. I've personally watched Frankie play it acoustically with Dickie in his living room a few years back when still livin in Northern California. So I approach it from that perspective, family and the love of playing.
I don't get the sounds like an 80's Tesla ballad or Brett Michael's clone comments. Just seem like blanket statements due to who it is and what he was. Preconceived notions can lead to missing out on an individuals talent and that is just lame all the way around.

Like you said, it’s subjective, so don’t take it personally. Dickey also played with Stephen Segal, and his music sucks objectively.
I actually didn’t know who this guy was and thought it sounded very Bob Jovi. Then I looked him up and realized I wasn’t far off, he was in Tesla - very 80s Guitar Center vibe. Everyone loves different aspects of these songs. To me, “Blue Sky” isn’t as about the lyrics or the vocals (dickey, gregg and Warren alway “undersang” it, sweetly). It is about that instrumental section (one of the reasons those Derk/ Warren instrumental versions were such a joy) so when that is mostly removed in exchange for over-singing the lyrics, it changes what I love about the song.
I don’t like to rag on music others here enjoy, it’s always a victory when someone’s music is loved. To me this removes what I love about the song.

I didn't realize I was taking it personal. Just don't get the correlation between what Frankie did with Tesla (20+ years ago) and what he is doing in the song I posted. I appreciate you elaborating further on your position, it makes me see where you are coming from.
Take care...

Well this will piss off a bunch of you:
I've never heard a Live version of Blue Sky that I liked. All I think about is the studio version that IMHO can never be topped. Blue Sky is one of those iconic songs where the studio version is perfect and you can't match or top perfect.
This was different and I enjoyed listening to it.
PEACE

Spot on.
Blue Sky is one of those iconic songs where the studio version is perfect and you can't match or top perfect.
Boom
While any cover is a sign of admiration, I agree with the first quoted post that the sheer beauty and joy of this song is the amazing guitar work.

I can't say I disagree ,but I have always been partial to the version from. "An Evening With". I know alot of folks don't care for it, but Warrens slide playing on that Is top notch!!
Stony brook version I like also quite a bit. Barry's bass playing on that Is spectacular, especially when Duane and Dickey solo.
