I love the early Wishbone Ash ... particularly the first 4 studio albums and the magnificent "live Dates" ... which is a must for anyone's collection.

Being in the UK I was introduced to Wishbone Ash a couple of years before I had even heard of the ABB ... similar in that they both had 2 lead guitarists, but very different on overall sound and in musical origins.

Wishbone Ash were formed in October 1969 by bass guitarist Martin Turner and drummer Steve Upton. When Tanglewood's original guitarist, Martin's brother Glenn Turner left the trio and returned to his native Devon, their manager, Miles Copeland III advertised for a guitar player and also for a keyboard player. After an extensive search for a guitarist, the band could not decide between the final two candidates, Andy Powell and Ted Turner (no relation to Martin). It was suggested that they try both guitar players "just to see what it sounds like". Differing from the twin lead sound of The Allman Brothers Band, Wishbone Ash included strong elements of progressive rock, and also of folk and classical music. After the band members wrote several suggested band names on two sheets of paper, Martin Turner picked one word from each list – 'Wishbone' and 'Ash'.

I heard the "Stamp Album" back in it's day. Was that a live album? Was it one of their best early albums?

The first few albums were the best. After that between the personnel changes and music going a different direction WA seemed to fade away. I still listen to those first albums a couple of times a year.

I love this band! I agree that the first four and Live Dates are all essential. I would also add There's the Rub to that list.

After that, their albums can be a bit spotty, though each one has at least a couple worthy tracks ...:)

It sounds to me like that album might actually be by The Climax Blues Band

After There's the Rub, the band seemed to forsake longer improvisational cuts which had been their forte with the original quartet and even with the enlistment of Laurie Wisefield on that aforementioned album..but till then, primo stuff the harmonies on vocals as exhiliarating as the ones with guitars!
