Love both but if you put a gun to my head it would have to be Black Sabbath. We would play the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album in the locker room before football games in high school.

Deep Purple wrote the book on metal.

Opinions may vary even if we both like the same band but DP has NOTHING to do with heavy metal.

Blackmailed is iommi' s equal for writing awesome heavy riffs.

Even more, though, Deep Purple ushered in the ultra dramatic classical / gothic tinged that went beyond what Sabbath could have conjured. The chops that Paice, Lord, and Blackmore had were miles beyond what Sabbath offered. Deep Purple SHREDDED. They gave us Euro Metal.

Songs like Fireball and Burn gave rise to thrash. Lars Ulrich is the first to tout Purple.

Obviously Yngwie agrees.

And you don't have Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson without Ian Gillan. Purple signed Gillan nbc because they wanted a Robert Plant, but they got something much more.

I'll challenge the earlier stated suggestion of MC5. Great band but too underground. I've never heard a metal band cite them as an influence.

Great topic!!! Sounds like it could be a conversation on "That Metal Show"!!

Not sure if this is sad ,funny or both.
Paul Di'Anno - Charlotte The Harlot - [VERY DRUNK W/SUBTITLES] subtitles are pretty funny!

Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter

Adrian Smith - Little Wing

Steve Harris's solo release British Lion
This Is My God

Steve's daughter
LAUREN HARRIS-STEAL YOUR FIRE

K.K.Downing's Toys in the Attic 2015

Black Sabbath - Born to Lose (Ray Gillen Vocals, Mastered version)

Metallica - Ronnie Rising Medley (A Tribute To Dio)

Mac Sabbath - Pair-a-buns, DRIVE-THRU METAL, 7-10-15 live

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

I never had much use for the hair metal bands of the '80's and '90, including Metallica.

Too many named genres back in the day Hard Rock, Acid Rock, Heavy Metal....

Black Sabbath was termed hard and acid back in the '70 and a band like Queen was considered the 1st Metal band. I have full show DVD boots from 71, '72, '73, & '74. I couldn't find any of these complete shows on youtube, so here's a couple early clips. Their early discs were "Killer"

Stone Cold Crazy

Son And Daughter

Liar

Keep Yourself Alive

Sabbath, hands down..and I'm sure if you talked to the more Recent great metal players you'll find them agreeing & modeling some part of their music after Black Sabbath. Now if you were to compare Zeppelin & Sabbath, that could be tough, though I don't know if u could really consider Zeppelin metal. I always considered Zeppelin tamer. They were from the same time period & set their own genres. I remember when Led Zeppelin I was 1st played on fm radio,& the long solo & sounds..it was considered heavy metal at the time. No one ever heard sounds like that. Then things got heavier.

Ratt??? Yer kidding right???

I saw them open for Ozzy on the bark at the moon tour. They we're terrible. The only good thing about hair metal was the girls that listened to it.

WASP had one of last year's best metal albums - Golgotha

Blackie always seems to nail those concept albums. Doug Blair tears it up on guitars all over the whole album

Golgotha

Miss You

Kicking It Live also

just wanted to post something. canadianmule had some comments about metallica making them sound as if they have been lazy the last 16 years. I just wanted to show that they are on par for pretty much the rest of the bigger thrash bands from the 80's. since the year 2000.

-slayer- 4 studio albums, 42 minutes, 38 minutes, 39 minutes, 42 minutes. outside of that. a few songs that were bonus tracks/single only releases. the career boxset. 3 live dvds

-anthrax- 3 studio albums, 50 minutes, 66 minutes, 60 minutes. greater of two evils which is re-recorded songs with john from the joey era. the anthems cover EP. 2 live albums. 2 live dvds.

-metallica- 2 studio albums (3rd due out supposedly within the next 18 months), 75 minutes, 75 minutes. lulu 87 minutes. beyond magnetic 29 minutes. 4 live EPs. through the never live soundtrack. 7-8 songs on soundtracks/tribute albums though mostly covers. the ramones EP. 3 live dvds.

the only one of the big 4 still cranking is megadeth who have 7 studio albums since 2000 and ironically the most band member changes too. exodus, overkill and flotsam and jetsam are still cranking it out too with each of those 3 at least 5 studio albums since 2000.

I said crazy - not lazy. Then they sold their fans the therapy sessions. LOL And they even released it in theaters. Absolute genius.

Boo Hoo - this is metal. Who wants to watch these guys sit around crying? Rehabbing from their rehab caused by the emotional stress of group therapy brought on by the panic attacks that they get looking at their bank accounts.

I'm sure the death of a band member while on tour, james getting half his body burned, a riot happening at a concert, Jason newstead wanting to quit, etc didn't have any emotional damage on them at all.

I have zero sympathy for Hetfield and Ulrich when it comes to Jason Newsted. They reaped what they had sown for years.

Lars' "HE LEFT THE BAND!" meltdown is so entertaining...yeah, he left. Did it have anything with you being a complete tool to him for years?

Ah, but, we are indeed talking about influences here. Metal has had a tendency to be quite theatrical at times, and no one can deny that Alice Cooper was a ginormous influence on that. Any time Alice is asked about his influences, he always mentions three things...the bands in the city of Detroit in the late 60s, The Stooges and the MC5.

People for years have been saying that rock and pop bands are influenced by The Beatles whether they know it or not. I think that notion applies to more influences than just The Beatles.

So go get help but don't sell multiple DVDs about the situation. Jason quitting? That's funny. James "Do as I say and not as I do" Hetfield can play with Govt Mule and Jason can't? James can spend years doing nothing but if Jason helps out some young guys? If the way that they treated Jason forced them into therapy then good. It won't help with the rotting in Hell part.

Jason is a great guy and loves metal/music/fans, the others lost that love.

The acoustic guitar intro to "Back For More" is one of the best intros ever. Grin

Looking at the bands on that chart sure brings back memories.

Of the newer bands, I really, really dig Lamb of God. What their singer went through recently with being imprisoned in the Czech Republic is i-n-s-a-n-e.

The whole album has guitar like that all over. Drums are great too. Blackie is smart and surrounds himself with great players now.

Ratt always had real good albums covers. 😛

Never liked what was inside though but I ain't tossin' ya in no volcano.

I saw W.A.S.P, Armored Saint and Metallica in 1985, I was 14 years old. Blackie with the whole outfit adorned in sawblades, throwing raw meat deal.

When Metallica walked onstage in jeans and denim jackets, we thought they were the roadies tuning up until they started to play and the song kicked in. Grin

I don't remember all that much about Armored Saint. 😛

sounds like a pretty good show. funny metallica at one point wanted john bush from armored saint to be their singer and then bush later joined anthrax
