I checked out tix for Jones Beach, but not a big fan of the venue and too expensive for 4 tix where I would want to sit. I hope it does well, but I won’t be there.

Saw them at the Beacon around 99/2000 on By Your Side tour and they were fantastic. Also saw them open for ZZ Top when they had just released Shake Your Money Maker I think in Providence or Worcester back around 90 on the Recycler arena tour and my memory was thinking that they were not quite ready for that size of a venue.

I hope the tour leads to some more new music also.

The Black Crowes Reveal Lineup For Reunion Tour & Announce Intimate Gigs

The Black Crowes will preview a 2020 reunion tour with a pair of intimate gigs in New York City and Los Angeles this week. In addition, the musicians joining Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson on the trek have been revealed.

Chris and Rich will be backed by guitarist Isaiah Mitchell of Earthless and former Tedeschi Trucks Band bassist Tim Lefebvre as well as Once & Future Band members Joel Robinow on keyboards and drummer Raj Ojha during the 46-date trek as per Rolling Stone. None of the musicians accompanying the Robinsons previously were members of The Black Crowes.

The Black Crowes will perform tonight (Monday, November 11) at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City and then will play the Troubadour on November 14. Ticketing details will be announced via @TheBlackCrowes’ Instagram page.

Next year’s tour begins on June 17 in Austin, Texas and is currently slated to conclude at The Forum in Los Angeles on September 19. The Black Crowes will perform their debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, which turns 30 in 2020, in its entirety at each stop along with “all the hits.” Tickets for the tour are on sale now via Ticketmaster.

“I’m thrilled & blessed to be playing with my brother celebrating the music we’ve made & bringing our lives together full circle. Long live Rock n’ Roll & The Black Crowes!” said Chris Robinson in statement. “First and foremost, I’m really happy to have my brother back in my life. To be able to play music again together and celebrate the first record we made as kids, is a gift. To have these songs stand up after 30 years is something I could’ve never fathomed,” added Rich Robinson.

How odd to specify "no jamming" when I am sure that this is what most of their audience wants.

The Crowes were great each time I saw them. I'd be happy to snag a $30 lawn seat.

Well... I’m glad I read that new article before I purchased tickets today. On a positive note, it’s always good when family members at odds with each other make amends. But this thing is a total cash grab and it’s sad. There will be no jamming of songs, which explains why any backup band will suffice for this tour. No need for Marcus King, Luther Dickerson or Marc Ford. It’s gonna be Black Crowes karaoke. All singing with nothing special coming out of any musical instrument. They lost their way. It’s a perfect for those who wanna hear she talks to Angels and jealous again and go home early. I’m sure there are plenty of fans who wanna hear the hits without the extended jams. So be it. Tickets in West Palm Beach are $150 not including tax and fees for the first three sections. Count me out. I hope they eventually aspire to create new music with talented musicians. Or even stellar renditions of their classics with talented musicians. For now, this endeavor appears extremely lame.

What does it say how times have changed the group encores @ Bowery tonight with the very song (Stones'"Only Rock n Roll") adamantly refused at label exec's request some years ago (see Gorman!?)?????

I thought that was quite ironic. The label wanted them to cover it and use it as a kickoff single and used the line "well you covered Otis Redding for a big hit", and the band said no because they didn't like that song like they liked Hard To Handle.

Line up:

The brothers are the only two original members in the lineup, which also includes guitarist Isiah Mitchell, bassist Tim LeFebvre, keyboardist Joel Robinow and drummer Ojha.

Really? After everything he's been through with this band and going and doing Rich's Magpie Salute and then to have Rich basically sandbag that entire group of people he committed to to go for this money grab? I'd have been shocked if Sven didn't tell Rich to go f*ck himself. Although I doubt Rich and Chris reached out to anyone who was previously a Crowe. They just discard people.

now that you put it that way....

I bet anyone who was in Magpie would have taken a gig in the new Crowes, with maybe the exception of Marc Ford...who knows.....he isn't up for big tours and protects his sobriety. Marc brings drama (quitting the BC right before it started a dozen years ago) so maybe they pushed the easy button and just went straight with the new hires. I'm sure they are all top flight players.

also, it's not like the 2005-2013 version of the Crowes was a heavy jam band. The Luther version maybe did more. They did extended versions of a couple songs a night...and maybe added a minute to a half dozen 3-4 minute others songs. The Jackie Greene version did even less jamming (but they were strong lineup). They weren't Widespread Panic.

I suspect this is more note for note type approach.

I listened to most of the interview on Howard Stern yesterday and have to say the brothers were well behaved. My impression was they did their best to deflect any questions that might have forced them to criticize each other and both took the blame for the fights and estrangement between them.

To Howard's credit, he took it easy on them and did not dig into the accusations made by Gorman in his book so the interview did not produce any fireworks.

Regarding inviting any former members, both brothers took the approach that they are the original members of the Black Crowes and that they are the band and wanted to start with a clean slate with the tour and not have any baggage former members might bring.

Stern did bring up Chris asking for Rich to give up part of his share and Gorman to give up his share to do the last proposed reunion tour. Chris claims he did this as he did not want to do the tour and knew the others would not accept the proposal. He claimed it was his way of breaking free and doing his solo stuff. Seems like BS to me but who knows what was running through his mind at the time.

If I had not read Gorman's book I would believe the brothers are sincere in what they said during the interview but have to say considering how Gorman painted them as only caring about themselves I have my doubts this is anything but a money grab. Considering how their relationship can turn on a dime it will be interesting to see how long the brotherly lovefest lasts before the battles start up again.

They played 3 songs in studio that I heard during the interview and the band is tight and Chris sounded fantastic. I have no doubt they will put on great shows this tour if they play as well as they did yesterday.

The Crowes are playing a couple shed amphitheaters within an hours drive of where I live but good seats undercover are $100+ with all the prime seats being very $$$ and part of packages. I love the Crowes but I am debating waiting until the last minute to see if I can grab a bargain.

This was the setlist with song lengths the last time I saw the Crowes, which was in Waterbury CT in 2010:

Welcome to the Goodtimes 6:24

My Morning Song 7:42

Soul Singing 5:35

Ballad In Urgency 10:36

Wiser Time 16:36

What Is Home 7:36

Driving Wheel 8:39

Cold Boy Smile 7:23

She 5:56

Jealous Again 5:58

Remedy 6:52

Been A Long Time 7:54

Thorn In My Pride 18:15

Dirty Hair Halo 5:31

Nonfiction 11:54

She Talks To Angels 6:47

I Just Want To See His Face 7:26

Share The Ride 8:26

Hard To Handle 4:30

Thick 'N' Thin 4:14

Plenty of good jamming. I wasn't expecting every song to reach Grateful Dead-length jams of course, but they jammed more than many rock bands do.

I also marvel at Chris Robinson's voice live. A lot of guys who sound great on record can't cut it live, and also this guy seems to party a lot, and that can REALLy kill a voice, yet he can really deliver live.

Not a chance at those prices. Tons of seats available for Toronto. If you wait closer to the show I'm sure you will get a deal, especially from the re-sellers. I think they have bit off more then they can chew as far as venue sizes, but hey I'm sure people will pay up.

right? i'm not paying $150 to see the crowes. i've seen them in smallish clubs in philly (electric factory and the TLA) for $30-$40. why pay 5x that for a shed? without the exploratory jams and creativity? without ford or dickinson, who pushed rich?

i'll pay $20 at the same sheds when the scalpers are left hanging by lack of demand.

btw- their manager was on stern this week. they had been planning this since March. had venues booked for 5-6 months. ndas were all in place. i do wonder who's producing/promoting the tour and taking the risk, cause i'm sure the brothers were offered a guarantee + bonus. they saw $$ 8 months ago and could not turn it down. a couple million to play your old catalogue is not too shabby.

THE BLACK CROWES Play Second Reunion Concert In Los Angeles: Video, Setlist

Link will take you to videos

THE BLACK CROWES played their second reunion show last night (Thursday, November 14) at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. The concert took place three days after brothers Chris and Rich Robinson announced a 46-date 2020 tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of THE BLACK CROWES' classic debut album, 1990's "Shake Your Money Maker".

Joining Chris and Rich in the new BLACK CROWES lineup are EARTHLESS guitarist Isaiah Mitchell, former TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND bassist Tim Lefebvre along with ONCE AND FUTURE BAND members Joel Robinow on keyboards and Raj Ojha on drums.

As was the case at Monday's show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City, the Troubadour concert saw THE BLACK CROWES perform only the songs from the band's debut, along with the encore cover version of THE ROLLING STONES' "It's Only Rock 'N Roll (But I Like It)".

The setlist was as follows:
01. Twice As Hard
02. Jealous Again
03. Sister Luck
04. Could I've Been So Blind
05. Seeing Things
06. Hard To Handle
07. Thick N' Thin
08. She Talks To Angels
09. Struttin' Blues
10. Stare It Cold
11. It's Only Rock 'N Roll (But I Like It)

Regarding the decision to enlist all-new members for THE BLACK CROWES' reunion, Chris told Rolling Stone: "That was the first thing Rich and I agreed on. We don't want anyone from the solo groups. We don't want anyone from the past." Rich added: "In order to make this work. To give Chris and I the space to…" Chris interjected: "Be here right now."

THE BLACK CROWES' upcoming tour will mark Chris and Rich's first shows together since 2013. The group will perform its multi-platinum 1990 debut album in its entirety, along with a smattering of other hits and favorites.

The official tour kicks off properly on June 17 at Austin's Austin360 Amphitheater in Austin wraps on September 19 at the Forum in L.A.

Chris told Rolling Stone the new tour will hearken back to THE BLACK CROWES' original style, explaining: "I think this is pure. We went off into a lot of things. There's no jamming. There's no extraneous stuff. This is the purest BLACK CROWES that people first [heard]. I hope we reconnect with some people who lost their way with us because of all of our other shit we were doing."

Rich spoke frankly about the obvious family politics in reuniting with his older brother, saying "No one is here to be a dick. We love this music. We're musicians. We're brothers. We love each other. We love this opportunity. Changing the context with Chris and I and all new people is a much healthier place for us."

We don't want anyone from the past? Hold on, isn't this tour supposed to be to honor the anniversary of an album 30 years old? Isn't that the past? With all the crap that has happened over the years I kind of understand that but I think it would be nice to at least have some link to the other guys on that iconic album.

On the other hand, who knows who gets along with who.

Review: A reunited Black Crowes at Troubadour prove rock is back, sort of, again
https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2019-11-15/black-crowes-reunion-chris-robinson-troubadour

Chris Robinson had his dramatic factoid at the ready.

“This is one we haven’t played since…,” the Black Crowes frontman told the audience Thursday night at the Troubadour as he introduced “Struttin’ Blues,” a deep cut from the Southern rock band’s hit 1990 debut. Then he trailed off, having remembered that the last time the Crowes did “Struttin’ Blues” was Monday in New York.

“But before that we hadn’t played this song in 30 years!” he concluded with a swish of his shoulder-length hair.

Such are the risks of the rock-reunion circuit, where the novelty of a beloved group’s reactivation gives way quickly to the reality of making a once-broken thing work regularly again.
This week the Black Crowes — formed near Atlanta more than three decades ago by Robinson and his guitarist brother Rich — announced that they’ll tour next summer to mark the 30th anniversary of “Shake Your Money Maker,” which sold 5 million copies and spawned pre-grunge radio staples like “Jealous Again” and the band’s jabbering cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle.”

The success that followed famously drove the Robinson brothers apart. Talking the other day to Howard Stern, Rich Robinson said that even the notoriously combative Gallagher brothers of Oasis (with whom the Crowes toured in 2001) couldn’t believe how intensely he and Chris used to fight. The band finally broke up in 2013, when the Robinsons “vowed never to play or speak together again,” as a statement put it.

Now, like practically every other group that’s ever called it quits, the Black Crowes are back in business, albeit with new sidemen, including guys who’ve previously played with Howlin Rain and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Within days of the band’s announcement, Rage Against the Machine and My Chemical Romance revealed they were reforming as well — indication that, in an era when rappers and pop stars dominate streaming charts, rock acts understand that butter for their bread is available only on the road.

Thursday’s gig was one of two underplays (along with Monday’s at New York’s Bowery Ballroom) meant to offer a kind of proof of concept ahead of the Crowes’ 2020 arena tour, set to kick off June 17 in Austin and wrap Sept. 19 at the Forum in Inglewood. The crowd at the Troubadour was full of music-industry types, along with some regular folks who’d lined up at the old Tower Records store on Sunset Boulevard to buy tickets for $50 a pop; both groups of people went big on the shaggy “Last Waltz” cosplay.

So what were the Crowes seeking to demonstrate? First, of course, that Chris and Rich have figured out how to be onstage without killing each other. They certainly seemed friendly enough as they descended the stairs from the Troubadour’s dressing room to the sound of James Brown’s “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a)
Sex Machine,” in which the funk legend advises listeners to shake their moneymakers.

Later, as Chris introduced the members of the band, he referred to his brother by his full name, Richard Spencer Robinson — a cordial touch.

More important, though, was whether the Crowes — one of the great live bands of the 1990s — have been recharged by going back to their debut, which they played from beginning to end here (and plan to do on tour next year). Things got pretty bleak for the group during the 2000s, a period recounted in a memoir just published by the Crowes’ original drummer, Steve Gorman.

In interviews promoting his book, Gorman — who calls the current reunion “sad” — has described quarrels over money and “a culture of secrecy and shame” that eventually led to his departure. But the music had already begun to suffer long before that, with tuneless albums and overly jammy concerts increasingly out of sync with what anybody else with a guitar was doing.

“Shake Your Money Maker” captured the band in a sweet spot — rowdy but crisp, soulful yet hard-hitting — even as rock was beginning to transform around it. Rich’s guitar playing was both crunchy and lyrical; the rhythm section had a bottomless supply of groove. And Chris sang with so much raspy passion that it’s a miracle every other skinny white dude didn’t give up right then and there. (Good try, Spin Doctors.)

Not all of that was on display at the Troubadour, where you could see that age had been relatively kind to the still-wiry Chris and to a stouter, commanding Rich. Tempos were maybe a few ticks slower than they used to be, while Chris’ singing didn’t put across quite the same pain.

But with a swaggering “Twice as Hard” and an endearingly weathered “She Talks to Angels,” the show was a strong start; more to the point, it made it easy to believe that the Crowes will get better the longer they play, which is the real trick of any comeback.

“That’s our presentation for you tonight,” Chris said after the band shimmied through “Money Maker’s” sleazefest of a closer, “Stare It Cold.” Then the group encored with an even trashier rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll (But I Like It).”
For a watchword, they could do worse.

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,
