Black Crowes 2020 tour

If this true, the Black Crowes settled their differences much faster than I anticipated. Amazing how people can spew such vile hatred and then go on tour shortly afterwards like it never happened. Truth is those brothers need each other, musically and otherwise. Reminds me of the Eagles. The almighty dollar wins out in the end. Wonder who they pick up for lead guitar. I loved Marc Ford in the 90’s but I think Luther Dickerson has surpassed him at this point. Would love to see Luther, Marcus King or Jimmy Herring .

I suspect half the drama with the Black Crowes is all about publicity and getting press for whatever project members might be engaged in at any given time. Sort of like the David Lee Roth/Van halen school of marketing so to speak.....Don't get me wrong, there certainly is anger and contempt for one another at times, but there's also hype tossed in too...

I think Chris Robinson wanted a bigger cut of the money and now he’s got it. Drummer, Steve Gorman, is out. It will be a big tour with less band members to spilt the money with.

Not sure I am buying it. It has not been confirmed by either Chris or Rich, and Magpie are just getting ready to drop they're new release on 10-18-19 , next Friday. So I am pretty skeptical.
My preference anymore is just to hear Rich on his own or with Magpie. The last few years of the Crowes, Chris was pretty heavy headed as far as the musical direction of the band(Grateful Dead sounding). I know Rich had stated that also. Not saying it wont happen, but I think there is a lot to iron out.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Are Marc and Sven still playing with Magpie? That seems like an easy transition to BC reunion, if it happens. I'd prefer they go back to Marc or Audley rather than new hired gun, but I am sure they would make it work out somehow.
When they kicked off that last reunion (or was it 2 reunions ago?) at the Tabernacle in Atlanta maybe in 2004 or 2005, Steve Gorman didn't show up until the day before. Jeff Sipe had been hired to do the tour and already done all the rehearsals, etc. Then the BC/brothers patched things up with Gorman and he came in barely any rehearsals and they were off.
So there is precedent. It could happen again. I guess difference this time is Gorman has the book out now and has been rather public with his targeted complaints about Chris Robinson. So perhaps that bridge is burnt.

I have not heard anything that they are not playing with Magpie. Like I mentioned, I am skeptical with Magpie's new one coming out that they would just drop the ball at this point...but you never know I guess.

How Ex-Black Crowes Drummer Steve Gorman Exorcised Demons With Trigger Hippy
As the drummer for the Black Crowes for 27 years, Steve Gorman has seen some shit. He recounts a lot of it in his new book Hard to Handle: The Life & Death of the Black Crowes — A Memoir, a backstage tell-all that features more than a few fights between brothers Chris and Rich Robinson.
“‘You’re gonna have to write the book, man.’ That’s something everybody would say to me,” says Gorman, sipping a coffee in a popular Nashville breakfast spot. “And what I said for 25 years was, ‘Well, I would, but nobody would believe it.'”
Obviously he relented, and with the book written, published, and receiving good word-of-mouth for its juicy tales of rock & roll and even rockier relationships, Gorman is happy to put those dysfunctional days with the Crowes behind him. He much prefers the calmer waters of his latest project, the Americana jam-rock-country band Trigger Hippy.
On Friday, the group releases its second album, Full Circle & Then Some — but it’s not exactly the same Trigger Hippy that put out its self-titled debut in 2014.
Along with Gorman and co-founding member, bassist Nick Govrik, Trigger Hippy 2019 features two new members, as well as a more stable foundation. Guitarist Jackie Greene and vocalist Joan Osborne exited the lineup in 2015. “She’s super busy and didn’t have the same level of enthusiasm for a million reasons that all make perfect sense,” Gorman says of the multi-tasking soul singer. “I was laughing because I lost two bands in two years. Chris blew up the [Black Crowes] in ’14 and Trigger Hippy blew up in ’15.”
The amicable exits of Green and Osborne left the future of the band in limbo — until Gorman and Govrik began jamming with singer-guitarist Ed Jurdi of the Texas group Band of Heathens. “Ed was a big part of us doing something again,” he says. With a new core in place, Gorman and Govrik followed a tip from a local record-store owner and club promoter and found singer Amber Woodhouse fronting a cover band at a Nashville honky-tonk. “We watched her sing two songs and went, ‘What the fuck was that?’ She was just great,” Gorman says, “and this album only scratches the surface of what she can do vocally.”
The track “Dandelion” proves Gorman’s point. Woodhouse’s sky-high pipes shake the rafters, as the band lays down a funky rhythm behind her. In lead single “Don’t Want to Bring You Down,” she blends her voice with Jurdi’s and Govrik’s, revealing the group’s secret weapon: call-and-response vocals. But it’s on the LP’s title track where the band preaches its mission statement, or at least that of the at-peace and (mostly) at-rest Gorman: “No more life on the run/we’ve come full circle and then some.”
Gorman says that unlike his experience in the studio with the Robinsons, making music with Trigger Hippy has been a process built on understanding and compromise.
“The older I get, the more patient I get,” says Gorman, who will take Trigger Hippy on the road into December. “I’ve had too many false starts and I’d rather go much slower and never backtrack.”
He does have one regret about his old band, however: that the Black Crowes didn’t do right by their fans when they called it quits. According to Gorman, the group was to embark on a 25th anniversary tour in honor of their 1990 debut album Shake Your Money Maker, but Chris Robinson quashed it with demands for more money. “The terms were nonnegotiable,” Gorman writes in Hard to Handle. “Give him what he wanted, or he wasn’t coming back.”
Gorman takes a final sip of his coffee. “It’s not a problem to sit across from someone and say, ‘I don’t want to be in a band anymore with you.’ But let’s figure out a way to consciously uncouple, and show respect to what we built together and to all the people who gave us this life,” he says. “We don’t have to agree, but we have to meet in the middle. That’s what any band is. What are you willing to sacrifice for the greater good? The answer to me is a lot; the answer for them is very little.”

Well Roth and the Crowes were both managed by Pete Angelus.
I think Chris Robinson wanted a bigger cut of the money and now he’s got it. Drummer, Steve Gorman, is out. It will be a big tour with less band members to spilt the money with.
I think Gorman is still a partner, so I don't think he's cut out of the pay even if he isn't involved.
Not sure I am buying it. It has not been confirmed by either Chris or Rich, and Magpie are just getting ready to drop they're new release on 10-18-19 , next Friday. So I am pretty skeptical.
It's an album that Magpie recorded last year at the same time they did Volume 1. If you notice there is very little promotion for this album and no tour dates. I'm pretty sure Magpie has been done since the end of their last tour.
That was 2005 and Bill Dobrow played drums with them for the first several shows and got canned, then Jeff Sipe was going to be in when they called Gorman back.
All of that said, if they do this with Gorman, Ford & either Johnny Colt or Sven on bass then they will be fine. I just hope they don't do it with all replacement players, which is the big rumor.

Yes..I enjoy it. Its worth checking out. The current one they talk about Gormans book.
I am pretty selective when it comes to podcasts. I have tried to listen to some that sounds like Beavis and Butthead are hosting and others I think are more impressed with hearing themselves talk.....if you know what I mean.

Rock Solid is a good one.
Walkin' The Floor with Chris Shifflet of the Foo Fighters is another good one.

to me it looks like the magpie salute is over. ford doesn't like to tour that much

I suspect half the drama with the Black Crowes is all about publicity and getting press for whatever project members might be engaged in at any given time.
No!
Deciding to tour doesn't mean they settled differences.

"There Might Be Something in the Works"
I'll believe it when I see it.
Like what I have heard from the new rendition of Trigger Hippy

Like what I have heard from the new rendition of Trigger Hippy
x2..agree. I would like to catch them live.
This is just my opinion, but I would like to see the TTB pair down to a band about this size.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Even if the tour is on, I doubt any differences have been settled, nor has there been any change in the much publicized money issue. Chris (inexplicably) wanted more %$ and Rich and Steve simply said "no." Tour or no tour, I doubt that's changed.
What is glaringly obvious is that their respective solo careers were going nowhere. Chris was grinding it out with CRB on the club circuit for 300 dates a year, year after year (not where you want to be for a rockstar at age 52), and now THAT band has imploded. Rich putting Magpie together had some potential, but the band's album and subsequent live shows were pretty uninspired. Sadly, they're one of those pairs of brothers that simply can't produce creatively without one another.
IF a tour materializes, I can't imagine who'll round out the line-up. Sven Pipien is probably the only former member who might be included, but if every one else is out, he might be out too.

CRB wasn't doing 300 shows a year, maybe a 3rd of that, but nowhere near 300.
I'm guessing the lineup will be a combination of As The Crow Flies and Magpie Salute...
Chris
Rich
Sven on bass
Adam MacDougall or Matt Slocum on keys
Audley Freed on guitar
Joe Magistro on drums

That'd be a good lineup. I'd buy a ticket. They do sound better and have a larger catalog to choose from if they added Jimmy Page, if he is available.
And I agree with earlier comment that I doubt the brother$ have $ettled any of their difference$. A$ long a$ they have $eparate tour bu$$es and $eparate dre$$ing room$, they $hould be fine to get through a tour together.

Keep in mind that CR just fired Adam MacDougal from his solo band. So he's burned that bridge as well. Gorman isn't just someone you can replace. That dude's feel and swing DROVE that band. Different level in terms of longevity and history, but it is like The Rolling Stones without Charlie Watts....the combination of Gorman and Rich powered The Black Crowes in a similar (or at least comparable) fashion that Keith and Charlie drive The Stones' groove. I'm a huge Crowes fan but its getting hard to continue to take these brothers seriously.
I did see Trigger Hippy on Friday night and they CRUSHED. So there's that too.
In regards to line ups, CR wanting all the money (his wife is the one that emailed on his behalf making those demands too, which is funny)and Jimmy Page. Highly recommend just reading Gorman's book. He paints a pretty believable picture about all that madness. They burned their bridge with Page too btw.

I have been waiting on Page to do something ever since his run with the Crowes almost 20 yrs ago!!! He always says he has something planned or in the works, but never materializes.

I agree that Steve Gorman really drove the train. Great pocket drummer with propulsive fills who fit them to a T.

I agree about Gorman. He is an underrated drummer. When they got back together the 1st time SG was not a part of the initial process. It was Bill DoBrow, but he could not cut it.
Glad to hear Trigger Hippy put on a good show. Looking forward to hearing they're new release.
Gonna order Gormans book this week hopefully.

Chris and MacDougall have since made up after Neal Casal died. Adam played a Green Leaf Rustler show with him as well as the Casal tribute with him. So that fence seems to be mended.

Seeing Trigger Hippy in December.

Cool thanks!!
I remember when they broke up for the first time in the early 2000's right around the time Chris released his first solo effort, there was an interview with him and he was asked about his time with Page. I remember him saying something to the effect that other people were more impressed about it than he was.

STEVE GORMAN Has No Interest In Taking Part In THE BLACK CROWES' 2020 Tour, Says Reunion Is 'Not About Music'
Drummer Steve Gorman has confirmed to Ultimate Classic Rock that he hasn't been approached to take part in THE BLACK CROWES' rumored 2020 reunion tour. "It won't happen," he said about whether he expects to be contacted to participate. "Trust me. [Laughs] This reunion, I've heard from many sources for several months that this is happening. This ain't got nothin' to do with trying to re-find a musical connection. This is a very different motivation and impetus, so the last thing that the brothers Robinson are going to do is involve someone who is going to take a chunk of the pie away from them."
Gorman went on to say that Chris and Rich Robinson "have every right" to go out on the road with new musicians and call it THE BLACK CROWES. "When I quit the band in 2001, I relinquished my right to the name," he explained. "I never thought I'd be back to begin with. And I never was cut back in on that side of things as far as a third of the partnership in terms of who owns the name THE BLACK CROWES. And that's fine."
He continued: "The truth is, when Chris blew the band up in 2014, the last thing I wanted was to be involved in a continuing string of e-mails from lawyers and accountants trying to get everybody to agree on something. It's been much nicer to know that this is all in the rear view. And again, they wouldn't ever think of approaching me, but it's going to be a pretty tough thing to make sense of, six years after Chris said, 'I need all of the money or I'm never doing this again' and then suddenly saying, 'Okay, I'm ready to do it again.' I mean, it just speaks for what's going on. They painted themselves into a corner and they need to go out as THE BLACK CROWES, and I don't think, frankly, they give two flying fucks who is in the band onstage with them. They're going to go do what they have to do. And I don't begrudge anybody who can make a living playing music in their 50s on principle. It's, like, good for you. But the way this will be spun, and the way that everything has been spun for years, [it is] a pretty dubious suggestion that this is anything about a reunion or an anniversary."
Pressed about whether there is any scenario under which he would be willing to return to THE BLACK CROWES for a hypothetical reunion tour, Gorman said: "Not that I can imagine, and I have a really active imagination. So I would say no. And the truth is this, I have absolutely no interest in being in a room with either one of those guys, much less onstage with them for a year and a half. I have worked my ass off to make sure that I was never in a position where I thought I might have to do this. So, I mean, there's that. I don't need it. The reality is, if they did call me and if they did call Johnny [Colt] and if they did call Marc Ford or if they called Sven [Pipien], what are the chances that band is ever as good as it once was? I would say nil. So there's pragmatic considerations, and I don't need that. And then on top of it, once you really do get down to the music of it, if this were about music, those phone calls would have been made. It's not about music. It is what it is."
THE BLACK CROWES have been inactive since they played their final show in December 2013.
Last year, Chris put together a band called AS THE CROW FLIES to perform primarily BLACK CROWES songs. Joining the singer in the initial version of the group were fellow former CROWES members Adam MacDougall, Andy Hess and Audley Freed, plus Marcus King and Tony Leone.
Rich Robinson is currently involved with THE MAGPIE SALUTE in which he is joined by Marc Ford from THE BLACK CROWES, bassist Sven Pipien (also from the CROWES) along with lead singer John Hogg (HOOKAH BROWN, MOKE), drummer Joe Magistro and guitarist Nico Bereciartua.
Gorman's book, "Hard To Handle: The Life And Death Of The Black Crowes - A Memoir", was released last month.
