Betts,Dylan,Rambling Man

Somewhere among my collection of shows, I have a CD of a Bob show with a Dickey sit-in. I believe those two have some sort of equal admiration society among them!

I think I have a dylan collection that is quite extensive and have searched for dylan/Betts collaborations for a long time.
And you have it on cd!!!
Start searching your home for that cd 😛

"Betts then tells the story of how it came to be.
Dylan says, “Let’s do ‘Ramblin’ Man.”
“All right, let me write the words down,” Betts tells him.
“I know the words,” Dylan says. “I should have wrote that song.”
Betts looks at this reporter and laughs with a big grin."
Wonder if Eric ever said sumpin like that to Gregg....

A few months after Dickey Betts was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame he got a call from another Rock and Roll Hall of Famer he greatly admired about sitting in with him at a show near his Florida home. During Bob Dylan's Sept. 30, 1995, concert at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa guitarist Betts joined him on stage for several numbers.
That is fairly common for a Dylan show. Uncommon is Dylan singing a song written by a contemporary, especially a huge hit like "Ramblin Man," the single Betts wrote and sang for the Allman Brothers' 1973 album "Brothers and Sisters." Dylan surprised the audience, and Betts, that night in Tampa nearly two decades ago with "Ramblin' Man."
When asked about the show, Betts, seated at his Sarasota home, smiles and imitates Dylan singing the "Ramblin' Man" lines, "I'm on my way to New Orleans this mornin', leaving out of Nashville, Tennessee."

"I said, 'Bob, just sing whatever you want to.' I didn’t think he knew the words. I figured he’d just make up some stuff," Betts recalls. "He knew the song word for word. Man, it was such an honor. He sang it and I told him later that those words have never had so much feeling. The way he sings, he makes every word punchy. It really was beautiful. It really was."

I believe that Betts sat in with Dylan back in 2000 and I have that on CD somewhere. It might have been Tampa, FL if I remember correctly.

The Betts/ Dylan Ramblin Man is from I believe 10/1/1995 and I think Dickey sat in in Tampa in 2002 for a song.

Garcia and Betts were close too.

Garcia and Betts were close too.
That's funny considering that Gregg, and Garcia did not get along to say the least.

Yeah it was surprising that Gregg said in his book that he isn't a Dead fan -- never really heard of any specific dissension between him & Jerry, but I would've thought he'd dig their music -- Duane speaks real highly of Jerry in the WNEW radio interview
...then there's 4/26/71

Thanks for the link The_Newt! - as BigV has said, Duane may not ever had played a better slide solo, at least during a sit-in, than Beat It On Down The Line

Both members of the dead, and members of the ABB have bashed each other's bands over the decades.

Which is rather odd considering that they played together at Watkins Glen, and at other shows in the 70s.
Or how the ABB would cover the dead song Franklin's tower. Bob Weir and Lesh played at the Beacon in 2009 since they're friends with Warren.
I like both bands; but as someone else said in the one link above Butch and even Gregg in his book do seem a bit jealous about how the dead could and did fill stadiums for decades, while the ABB did not.
But I'm glad I got to see both bands a lot, and saw the rest of the dead, and ABB at Penn State with friends.
