An Evening With The Allman Brothers Band: 2nd Set

I love it and there is a cassette player in a scrap yard somewhere with a copy that pretty much lived in the player so they deserve to be buried together I guess.

I love it, too, and I'm glad I happened upon this article on Facebook because it caused me to pull this CD out of the rack where it had been for way too long.
IMO, this is the best live record the Brothers ever made.............after Fillmore East, of course. Let's not forget that they won a Grammy for the version of Jessica on this record.

A very, very good album. Great representation of that time for the band. I also love the 1st Set and the Play All Night releases, as well as the three studio albums they put out. But this one is the one I always come back to from the Dickey/Warren/Woody era. I know some who actually prefer this lineup, and while I jump back and forth between the original lineup, this one, and the final one, I can certainly see why some people I know prefer this lineup when hearing this album. I wouldn't go so far to say it's up there with At Fillmore East (though I don't believe any live album from anyone belongs up there with it) but I would say that this release is probably number 2 in the live album rankings for the band (or at least tied for 2 with A&R Studios and One Way Out).

In Kirk West's book, he comments that recording overdubs for 2nd Set were 'a joke.' I wonder to what extent this album is overdubbed.

2nd set always seemed like an afterthought to me or a record company obligation. If my memory serves me right, one of the cuts was from that acoustic cd they did for charity. Great cut and another great cd but if you are a fan you already have it. And the cover? Couldn't they have at least took another picture? Instead the used the pic from 1st Set with the harmonica player airbrushed out. I always thought that was cheesy as hell. So basically you've got the same cover and a track you already had. With so little effort from the band, I felt it was a money grab especially with so many great boots of that era floating around. 🙁

I guess to me it was a matter of they gave us hundreds of soundboards from that era so if they charge for one comp then that is fine with me. Most people don't have the traded shows so it works. The Acoustic Liz Reed is a nice addition as people couldn't buy it even if they had wanted to. Wish it was a Double CD with the whole acoustic show.
The packaging was definitely an after thought. But this is the ABB. The 90s covers were always them standing in a row. But a good example of that era and the songs kick ass.
Surprised that they never packaged 1st and 2nd together.

Amen to that Liz Reed CanadianMule.
I was living in Macon when they recorded what was rumored to be the first set. As it turns out the shows were not all that was expected but I saw all of them. I also had the rare privilege of working at Hay House when Kirk did the photo shoot that later graced the back of First Set.
That was quite an experience. Dicky walking around Hay House strumming his guitar, Gregg playing the piano in the Music Room...

I kinda don't get that comment. Maybe you can show me an officially released live record that has not been "doctored" in some fashion.............I think you'd be VERY hard pressed to find one. When the Brothers released the remastered Brothers and Sisters some years back, they included a
Winterland show in San Francisco from 1973. I'm quoting from memory, but Producer Bill Levenson admitted in Hittin' The Note regarding the Brothers and Sister remaster that "Over the course of a 2/1/2 hour show, there are going to be mistakes. Fortunately with the modern tools available to me, I can edit those out."
And it's pretty much common knowledge in the ABB camp that Tom Dowd spliced together two versions of Elizabeth Reed to construct the version on maybe the most iconic live record of all-time, Fillmore East.
Besides, I know from personal experience that "An Evening With The Allman Brothers Band: 2nd Set" is no misrepresentation of the fire that burned in this version of the band. I saw them two times: 1994 (H.O.R.D.E.), and 1995. They were good both times, but that show in '95 was right up there with the hottest live shows I've ever attended, and I've been going to concerts for 45 years. When this band was ON............they were downright scary................especially Betts/Haynes trading leads with each other. Remember, this was before Dickey's meltdown, before substance abuse started to get him. Warren on the other hand was still young and simply smoking HOT. Not that he's any different now............we all know that. But then again, there's nothing like the fire of a really hot and young guitar player.

The Same Thing from 2nd Set is one of my favorite tracks and performances from this lineup.
I understand but totally disagree about this album being unnecessary due to all the boards out there.
I will pay for recordings like this. The best board in the world is still nowhere near the quality of a recording like this. I have a nice board from Tivoli, CO '94 and another from Auburn, AL '96 that I've listened to tons but I'd still be more than happy to hear a pro recording those performances.
btw: PLEASE release the Dowd recording of that 12/29/91 'Macon Kind of Bird!!! I have a great aud of this but would pay a very pretty penny to hear a pro recording of that!

Axeman - the 91 Macon run is available for MP3 download on Wolfgang's Vault.
I bought all 4 nights. Some great stuff, but listening to all 4 shows, you can tell why they never became an official live album.
Still 4 shows for $20 as good quality MP3s.

Thank you CB! I already have solid audience recordings of these shows but would love to have an upgrade. Are the WG Vault recordings soundboards?
What I'd really like though is that Thom Dowd pro recording of the 2/29/91 Kind Of Bird and the entire set thereafter for that matter. I agree that this run was not their best but the 12/29/91 Kind Of Bird was a top 5. At least. The Southbound, Dreams and Jessica are pretty good too if memory serves.
Are the WG Vault recordings boards?
Thanks

Axeman, yes, the Wolfgang's Vault shows are soundboards.
Enjoy,
