Allman Brothers Outtake Ardent Studio Memphis TN

Interesting to hear - love Gregg’s comment “hey man we’re just here makin music, & love”
the communication was there - Gregg wanted to do it 1 way, Dickey another, so they agreed to try both - in that process they realize they’re both hearing part of the song the same way….
cool outtake & just look what resulted - a tremendous soulful take - they make it theirs
Duane & BO, D&B, yes Robert Johnson himself….ALL love/would have loved the Shades version of this - swampy gutbucket Appalachian backporch blues

Just spitballin' but it would seem to me that this is much earlier than 1994. They're to my ears working out the initial format of the song, which they played during their appearance on MTV Unplugged which aired in 1990. Also, a studio version was released on Shades of Two Worlds which was released in '91. There are Shades outtakes done at Ardent which I've heard that include every song on Shades except this one. Those actually included a take of Delta Blue which didn't make it onto the studio release. My guess is this is from no later than '91 and probably from 1990.
"Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?"

Definitely from the Shades sessions Spring 1991.
Both Gregg and Dickey sound a little sauced, which never helps communication, does it?
Dickey had actually been playing this arrangement since the 1970s and we all know how flexible he is, right?

Talk about Shades of Two Worlds....
So apropos!!!

Could be they didn't take off their noise cancelling headphones?

Yep this is in Memphis 1991, Shades of Two Worlds sessions.
I remember reading Dickey, Warren, Butch and Jaimoe sing the background vocals on this version. I always thought I could pick out Warren's voice.
Also on the album Robert Johnson gets the writing credit but it also says it was arranged by Dickey Betts.
I wondered why they put that on the album. Maybe Gregg wanted people to know he didn't have a thing to do with it...assuming Gregg didn't like the arrangement.

Quite a historic studio. It's where Big Star had their mojo for sure.
