Allman Betts Band going on Hiatus

I saw on Instagram that the Allman Betts band has gone on hiatus.

Hmmm..interesting. I thought the band was starting to pickup some steam.
Just found this...
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Damn, they cancelled the show I had tickets for in New London CT in March.
Hope everyone is OK and the band is not splitting
I wouldn't have minded seeing the DAP with Luther Dickenson as I am a big fan of the Allstars.

Not a follower, but their IG story is pretty straightforward - they've stopped, started, canceled, postponed, rescheduled due to Covid that it's just better to take a break, not screw w/ticket refunds, and explore new things. They say they intend to return by the end of the year. Covid & its many iterations is just killing the live music biz.

Well that is good to hear and I don't blame them with COVID still raging but there was nothing on their official website and I received no notice of the cancellation so it caught me by surprise. And too late with refunds as I already bought tickets for March.
Devon also just posted this on the bands facebook page this afternoon so it is not like it is old news.
I hope they reschedule dates later in the year when things hopefully calm down. Keeping fingers crossed another new variant does not spring up in the meantime.

My local theater put out this email saying there is a lineup change and refund if requested:
After continuous touring, The Allman Betts Band has decided to take a hiatus from touring. Their show on March 3rd has been replaced with Devon Allman Project featuring Luther Dickinson (of North Mississippi Allstars) and the Samantha Fish Band with special guests the River Kittens. Your current ticket and seat assignments are still valid for the new show should you choose to take advantage of this opportunity. If you are not interested in attending the Devon Allman Project / Samantha Fish Band show you can refund your tickets by emailing us at @yahoo.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">wrfaa@yahoo.com. Refunds available until Feb. 14th.The Devon Allman Project is a six piece world-class band that has previously toured almost 20 countries - Playing the Peach Festival, Rock Legends Cruise and festivals in Europe and throughout the USA. It is led by Blues Music Award winning Devon Allman and features the two Allman Betts Band drummers, bass, Hammond B3 organ & piano and another guitarist. They will be playing songs of The Allman Brothers and Gregg Allman in their set as well as Devon's fan favorite originals and surprise covers. It's an exceptionally entertaining show. This run of dates will also feature the liquid light show and video visuals behind the band courtesy of "Brotherhood of Light" the touring visual company that toured with the Allman Brothers for 20 years and also for 3 years with Allman Betts.Samantha Fish, international genre-bending guitarist, is one of the most exciting and inventive artists on the scene.. Guitar World Magazine placed Fish in their ‘Top 10 Best Blues Guitarists in the World’ list. A triple threat, Fish, is a singer, songwriter, and electrifying guitarist who’s topped the Billboard Blues Charts numerous times and is the recipient of Blues Music and Blues Blast awards. The Kansas City dynamo, has seven albums under her belt, the most recent being Faster, produced by Martin Kierszenbaum (Lady Gaga, Sting.) This is her sophomore release for Rounder Records, her debut, was 2019's Kill or Be Kind. Revealing her affinity for North Mississippi blues heroes like R.L. Burnside and wildly inventive iconoclasts like Prince, the album ultimately embodies unbridled energy true to its emotional core. "The whole record has a theme of taking charge and taking the reins, in a relationship or life in general," says Fish. "I thought that after 2020 I'd end up with a dismal, bleak album, but instead, we came up with something fun and sexy and so empowering.” For Fish, one of the greatest joys of making music is the robust exchange of energy at her incendiary live shows. And in the process of creating Faster, Fish experienced a similar exhilaration—a sustained head rush that's entirely palpable in every track on the album. A force to be reckoned with, Samantha's live performance is an explosive brand of blues/rock-and-roll not to be missed

You are lucky they replaced ABB with DAP as mine was a straight cancellation. I would love to seen DAP with Luther D.
I will have to check later to see if they substituted or rescheduled any of the Mass March shows with DAP.
As far as COVID is concerned I certainly don't want to catch it if I can avoid it but my teenage daughter just came back from a school trip too Disney Orlando and her roommate tested positive and my daughter has a sore throat this morning. She tested negative on the rapid test last night but have to get her a PCR test today before she can go back to school.
I work from home so do not have much exposure to people outside my family. With my two daughters going to high school, and my wife being a flight attendant for an airline, I have resigned myself to the fact that I will most likely get Omnicron at some point so we all have to live our lives as best we can. I am triple vax'd so hopefully any symptoms will be mild at best.

What @nebish posted is pretty much their IG story so I don't think it's any dire news about the band's future. What I do think is many bands of all sizes (including Elton John's Farewell Tour) are being forced to stop touring until for a while. Band members & crew get Covid, the venues may/may not be flexible about refunds, and there's only so much uncertainty people can live w/over time. Audiences seem wary of purchasing anything too far in advance & many don't want to go through the checks to get into the venue.
Be cautioned about the word "mild." To professionals, "mild" means not so dire that a patient is at risk of hospitalization or death. It doesn't mean the patient has "mild" symptoms. My personal Covid story is that being triple vaxxed, I went to a small dinner over the holidays hosted by a doctor who assured me everyone was vaxxed (she wouldn't have had it otherwise). Turns out, one person lied - not vaxxed at all - and several of us came down w/Covid during the next week. Mine was 4-5 days of 102 fever & usual symptoms, but I knew I wasn't going to have to be hospitalized or die given the vaxx & therefore, "mild." Trust me, it didn't feel "mild." Other guests ranging in age from 37 to 74 missed work for 2 weeks and/or were really sick but no hospitalizations.
I don't know what is wrong w/people. The host trusted her guests & didn't demand to see vax cards, but who does stuff like that? If they do it for a friendly dinner, they'll do it for concerts or anything else they want to do.

I am glad there is nothing seriously wrong with the band and I am not upset they cancelled but rather was caught off guard.
No doubt it is criminal people lie about their vax status as some people don't seem to care if they expose others.
For the Allman Family Revival Concert back in November we had to show a vax card to get in and you had to wear a mask also.
As soon as many got in the door the masks came off and there was nothing the overwhelmed usher staff could do about it.
My wife and I wore our masks the whole concert but even though everyone was supposedly vax'd who knows if someone had a fake card or was asymptomatic.
I wear a mask anytime I go out and here in Massachusetts and where I live most people wear masks at the grocery store etc. but with my daughters and wife constantly exposed to outsiders I figure it is only a matter of time before we all get a dose of Omnicron.
The wife had COVID at Thanksgiving so maybe she already had Omicron but we are all 3X vax'd which give us some comfort we will not get deathly ill.

I work in the medical field and this go around is a little different. Being vaxed and tripled vaccinated is not going to ward this off. I have seen quite a few patients with all of their shots ,boosters and etc, still getting it. Symptoms/severity are varying and also age and comorbidity issues come into play.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

@jszfunk Yeah I know being 3X vax'd does not prevent someone from getting Omnicron or any of the earlier variants. My family is in good health with no underlying conditions so I am hoping this means mild to no symptoms if we do get sick.
My wife caught COVID at Thanksgiving most likely from a passenger on a flight to London she was working. She received a notice from the airline she works for that the CDC's contact tracing verified there was a positive passenger on her flight. She was only 2X vax'd at the time and suffered mild flu like symptoms for about 3 days. She got her booster shot after New Years so hopefully no one in my family will suffer serious complications should we contract Omicron.

You're right and that's what MSM seems to relay - there WILL be breakthrough cases. I had one as did others at the party I attended. I'm still working from home, everyone in my building wears masks, there's a vaxx requirement to get in most places (except unvaxxed Sarah Palin who slipped into Elio's on a night when the owner wasn't there while in town for her trial v. the NYT & of course, she now has Covid & the trial's postponed). Despite all the precautions, a patient's medical condition plays a big role. I just don't understand - and obviously, never will after 2 years - why some people are so entitled they'll risk the health of others for their own purposes. I feel for all musicians - in the Broadway pit, touring bands, singers who had regular gigs - but especially for those early in their careers when having not work/touring punches a big hole in their careers.

If I were a band I would nab Johnny Stachela to play guitar.

This blows but I understand completely. While Devon and Duane I'm sure aren't starving, you can only bankroll a losing operation for so long and I can't imagine how you make money touring under these conditions.
So is the DAP the ABB minus Duane and Johnny plus one Luther, then?

Taking a hiatus from touring is one thing. But taking a hiatus from song writing and album making is a whole other.
In going back and reading closer, seems to me they are opting out of both until later this year, which is an even bigger bummer because they've talked about a 3rd record being in the works.

I don't know that it's a COVID thing based on that instagram post, but we don't know what is being discussed behind the scenes. After all, Devon is basically putting his band (not clear who is in it yet) on tour in place of the Allman Betts Band. So I've got to wonder if something else is going on here. I am not implying something negative specifically, just other things that may be in play. Duane Betts has been in Florida and appeared recently with Berry and Johnny Stachela, there are videos online.
Having said that, they are playing the final Allman Family Revival dates, i believe there are 5 shows still left. What is not clear is whether the ABB will be the house band as has been the case, or it will be the DAP. I really like these guys but maybe COVID has had that hit a plateau of creativity and growth that they need to digest

Sort of a bummer. I really like their second album. They're a fairly new band, not sure how much traction they have and how well a fanbase momentum can be sustained given a hiatus. It's not like when the Grateful Dead took the year 1975 off.

So received the refund offer from ABB and it has been processed and should show up on my card in 7-10 business days. I would have traded my refund to go see the Devon Allman Project with Luther Dickenson but sadly they were not playing this venue as an alternate.

Well, I certainly hope the "hiatus" is much shorter than the dTb "hiatus", which has gone on for so long that sadly three of the six band members have passed away ...

it’s hard to say what goes on behind the scenes.

Their show at Kent Stage sold fairly well, looks like 2/3-3/4 sold in a casual scan of the seats available. Now, the Crash Test Dummies appearing the night before Devon, well, looks like they have sold less than 100 tickets.

Yeah, I thought it was kinda strange too, putting Allman Betts Band on hold and starting something else. Playing with Luther wold be pretty enticing though.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Their IG post says they'd keep their fans up to date on individual projects so I'd expect members to do other things - Devon is 50 years old & Duane isn't that much far behind. They're not kids just starting out who need to stick together. They say they'll be back ON STAGE at the end of the year. In the meantime, they can do whatever projects they want to feed their creativity. I don't think this is a big deal.

@cyclone88 Also Devon is a millionaire from Gregg's estate so he is in great shape financially. Also inherited all 43 of Gregg's guitars.
Duane Betts apparently is wealthy too or his dad pays his way. Duane often travels to Europe or the Bahamas etc on vacations and flies to California and Florida regularly and lives in a nice condo in Malibu, California in Los Angeles County.
Duane has three electric guitars with him on the road that Dickey played. Duane calls them "family" guitars and says he dad said he could take anything he wants except a custom Gibson that looks similar to a SG but has controls like a LP. Gibson built that guitar especially for Dickey just a few years ago. But Duane picked a Goldtop LP Dickey Betts Signature, a 1961 ES-335 dot neck and a 1956 Strat hardtail. He has a few of Dickey's acoustics too.
Not sure what Duane Berry Oakley's deal is. Dickey gave him Berry's Fender tractor bass years ago. Guess he has 1/2 of Berry's estate.

I didn't say anything about money. I said if they couldn't count on uninterrupted touring, they could fuel their creativity by doing other projects.

@cyclone88 I understand. I was just musing about Devon being financially secure whether he is in a successful band or no and it seems Duane Betts is too. One is likely not too concerned about band hiatuses or breakups when your father is a multimillionaire.
But on the other hand I'm sure their creative juices desire to achieve some success on their own.

When I saw the band last spring/summer they killed it. However it felt a little unbalanced. Devon didn't really add much to the guitar playing. On the other side Duane's voice is a little thin. Then add that so much is co-written with an outside writer and you wonder about long term viability

I saw on IG that Duane is writing songs with Johnny Stachela.

Duane posted this on FB the other day
"it was so nice to have my good friend @johnnystachela down all week. We worked on a lot of new music. I am super excited for this next chapter of the story. Stay tuned….."

@redhouse1969 Something must have happened. I enjoyed the Allman Betts Band the three times I saw them.
I thought it was cool of Devon to be in a band where he doesn't sing several songs except for some backups and play acoustic guitar while Johnny and Duane have good solo space. Of course Devon did have several he sang and had some long electric guitar solos. But maybe that became a problem for Devon. I hope that is not it. But if he needs more space and wants to perform with his own band, I can understand that.
Gregg had to have his band too. He use to say that he needed the control and space having his own band afforded him. Where he was the only chef in the kitchen is how Gregg often described it.
