Someone in Jacksonville will be crying.

http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/entertainment/article/Lynyrd-Skynyrd-announce-farewell-tour-starting-12524188.php

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd will kick off their final tour May 4 in West Palm Beach, Florida, more than 40 years after the band's debut album was released.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers announced Thursday that the farewell tour will also feature Kid Rock, Hank Williams Jr., Bad Company, the Marshall Tucker Band and 38 Special.

Formed in Jacksonville, the band behind hits like "Free Bird," ''Sweet Home Alabama" and "Simple Man," was struck by tragedy when a plane crash in 1977 killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and several members of the road crew. The lineup now includes Gary Rossington and Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie's brother.

Tickets for the first leg of the tour go on sale Feb. 2 at LiveNation.com.

Also heard Neil diamond and Elton John are hanging it up.

Elton John announced a farewell tour that will start in 2018 and end in 2021 - that's a long goodbye.

Neil Diamond revealed he has Parkinsons, which is pretty sad.

Didn't realize the Johnny VanZant version has been doing this for 31 years. They're really down to just Gary Rossington so really not more than a tribute band.

I've seen them back in the '90's (I believe) and they still had Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Gary but they also had Outlaws guitarist and leader Gary Thomasson. Now that was a good show, too bad they didn't do any Outlaws tunes.

Huey Thomasson. Let's not forget Rickey Medlocke played with them forever too. So what if they don't have all original members. How long did The ABB play with an original band? 😮

My mistake, Gary Thomason was a baseball player back in the '80's.

I saw the band iback to back nights n 1987 during the Tribute reunion, with Gary, Ed, Leon, Artimus and Billy; and Johnny when he had a pretty good voice. It was tremendous:

Saw them 2 more times in the early 90s with Gary, Ed, Leon & Billy. Their shows at Lakewood were big parties but they weren't producing new music of the caliber I'd hoped.

Saw the current version at Wanee a handful of years ago after the deaths of Leon and Billy. The nuanced piickin' sound that Ed King and Steve Gaines brought to the band was pretty well gone.

That said, they entertained a ton of folks over the last 20+ years.

I remember him. Giants outfielder I think.

Hey.....my daughter's soccer coach a few years back was Johnny Colt....Skynyrd bassist (ex Black Crowes)

He lives nearby and is a good guy. I've been happy he's had this gig for the 5-6 years. He commits to 120 days / year and it funds the rest of his year! I bet he's surprised it lasted this long.

We shall see if they really hang it up. I don't believe many bands when they say it's there "farewell" tour.

Neither here nor there but I bet Judy Van Zant has made more money than any single person from the 70's era "Southern Rock".

And I bet it's not even close.

Maybe I'm wrong but don't think so.

Good for her.

Only KISS show I ever attended was the Farewell Tour in 2000.

I saw the Who's farewell tour @ Shea Stadium in 1981 w/David Johansson & The Clash?

I remember seeing Hughie with Skynyrd, Great show! I was thinking around 2001? I'd have to check my stubs it was at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC. Hughie did a very Hughie-ish intro to Sweet Home Alabama. Medlocke (of Blackfoot fame) was credited with a couple early vocals/songs on the First And Last album. Johnnie VZ actually sounded more gruff and closer to Ronnie VZ as they went on. I saw their tour in 1987 at the Meadowlands Arena in E Rutherford, NJ, It was a nice show, Sad show, They wheeled Allen Collins out in a wheel chair to address the crowd. Weird vibe that night.

I think the big difference between the ABB and the Skynyrd "tribute" band is that Skynyrd never, ever goes off script. They play nothing but Skynyrd songs and only the way they were played when Ronnie was alive. Heck, they had Hughie and they have Rickey Medlocke. That opens up for whole new paths to go down. While the show I saw with Hughie was great, I was really hoping for an Outlaws song or two. There's no comparison to the ABB and the last 30 years of Skynyrd.

And I'm not going anywhere near the "God and Guns" direction Skynyrd went. Lets just say Ronnie wouldn't have done it that way.

A pathetic embarrassment of a band since they decided to have Johnny Van Zandt to sing. Zero artistic integrity and absolutely nothing new or original to say....good riddance!

I think Gary will call it a day after the tour. Good for him. Amazing career.

As for modern day LS, I have seen a few shows over the years. Always a big crowd, always having fun and watching a band play classic songs. No one seems to complain or have a bad time.

As good as the classic lineup? Obviously not but the same could be said about all older groups even the ABB. But people having fun at a show. Don't like it - don't go. Never really got the 25 years of complaining that they shouldn't tour as LS. Just don't go. Hell there are two versions of Yes right now and both are valid in many ways. Both put on a good show. Some get caught up in the politics of it and others just go to both and have fun.

Who knows - maybe Dickey/Jaimoe decide that the ABB should rise again. A single ABB Beacon Run would make the same income as a year of solo shows in theaters and clubs.

I think LS has provided a service over the years and allowed people to vent. The people that dislike the current band discuss them more than anyone. Same thing with Ted Nugent. Some people love hating them.

Agree with all you said. The tour the ABB did with them people here were pissed. I caught a handful of those shows, mostly in the south, and there were more Skynyrd fans than ABB fans. Hey, they had more commercial success. Makes sense. Still fun shows.

Regarding Nugent, he's an interesting character. Being from Detroit as I am I've known about the guy since I was a little kid. Actually saw him sit in with Skynyrd many moons ago. Good entertainer. He gets ripped on this site because of politics.

Exactly what some people say about the ABB except many say 45 years.

Relevant to who and how? Tours do very well and have seen no decline in an era where ticket sales are down for almost everyone. Relevant to many for well over 30 years - just not you.

We had second row seats in the Astrodome.

I was much more enthused about the opener, SRV.

Only time I ever got to see him play.

Took someone that had worked for him for 7 years duck hunting a long weekend back in December 05 or 06. He had nothing but good things to say about Ted Nugent and his wife.

Same thing with the Outlaws. I post the vid's for the fans of music, not for the negative nancy's to get their bitch of the day out.

I either confront or delete over the top comments that insult the artists. Someone had the heartless soul to post "My God Leslie... EAT A SALAD" on one of the Rock, Ribs, & Ridges vid's from a couple years back, I just deleted that one, Some folks had zany comments on Art Garfunkel's City Winery clips that he should just "Hang it up already", Art overcame throat cancer and sings for the love of the songs? Why are people so F'd up? I told Andy Aledort I made a few Dickey videos private because people started railing on Dickey and that's not what I intended to supply fodder for bitter gripers, He told me that people will always find something to bitch about and I shouldn't be bothered by them, I went in the next day and made them public.

It takes all kinds to make a world.... I'm a kind, You're a kind, etc... Live Happy People. Live Happy.

I've met Ted a few times over the years and always real friendly. Nice guy. He puts on that outrageous character for media and for those that hate him. It has kept him around. Always get a laugh at how people react and trip out over Ted instead of ignoring him.

the time to bitch about these bands should have passed. It won't be long before they are all gone.

It has always been simple. Don't like it - don't buy it.

I can't stand that Nutella stuff but in France they are fighting over jars. Just different opinions.
