Thanks AlPaul. Scott is a fine player and so devoted to Gregg's last band. Going to listen this evening.

The instrumentation is tight.
I wish I could say they wrote melodic
and beautiful melody lines but .... Not.

It's a shame that Gregg's band did not do a studio album of orginal material because he loved that band.

Yes Gregg said not long before he died that the Allman Brothers always seemed to be his brothers band and his brother was the founder. But his last band was finally the band he always wanted and it was the greatest joy to front that band and be its leader. Gregg said he finally had what he had wanted from the beginning.

They did a really great last album together. Gregg just wasn't writing a lot of material for decades... he was a great interpreter. His version of Tim Buckley's "Once I was" stands with his greatest solo work IMHO. This is one area that I don't think it makes sense to have regrets about.

To me the best Gregg Allman album is Laid Back. I knew a girl named Patty in 1973 and she bought it and liked it better than Brothers and Sisters and other ABB records. I liked it too and played my copy often for several years. Haven't played Playin' Up A Storm or Searching For Simplicity much in many years but still spin Laid Back 2 or 3 times a month.
But I didn't like it better than ABB albums. It didn't have Duane, Berry and Dickey on it. As I've aged, not having them on it is what makes it a great Gregg Allman album. Southern Blood is my second favorite. A really good album. And Scott is a big part of that.

I agree Southern Blood is second only to Laid Back, which is an all time great record period even to unbiased listeners, though the 2 aren't even in the same league.
Sure it's all covers but Only True Friend is the best Gregg tune ever and that DEFINITELY wasn't happening without Scott.
