70s Canadian band Moxy's first album

It's one of those stretches in which I'm pulling out CDs I have not spun in a while. Today it was Moxy's self-titled first album.
They were a Canadian band who had their moment in the mid-1970s. Their sound is not too far off from early Heart, Rush's first album, maybe the first Triumph album or two: a lot borrowed from Led Zepp, with big guitar riffs and big drums. Dumb lyrics. Tight playing. Fun stuff, second tier. Is Greta Van Fleet actually the next Moxy? Maybe.
I had gotten the album because it has Tommy Bolin guest-starring. Apparently the album had been recorded in terms of everything but lead guitar, and Moxy's guitarist had a falling out while recording, so they pulled Bolin in to play solos on all but 2 of the songs. It works. He has his James Gang sound on. You get to hear some of his trademark licks for sure.
If you like stuff that sounds pure 1970s, this is worth your time.

cool -will czech it out

Here's an audio-only cut from youtube called "Time to Move On," from the first Moxy album:

The Moxy guitarist is named Earl Johnson. He lives in my city and I actually saw him a couple of months ago in a local bar with his cover band called Canada Rocks. He can still play

Nice! Here is a song from the first album that features Earl Johnson rather than Bolin. The video has some nice photos of the band. Feel the early Rush / Zep vibe:

Rather incredibly, Moxy is never played on Classic Rock radio up here in Canada. They
were/are a little too obscure even for radio stations who have to meet government-set
`Can-Con' requirements.

DarylM, an interesting bit of Canadian rock trivia is that Loverboy's singer Mike Reno was Moxy's singer for a bit before joining Loverboy.
Classic Rock radio in the States is pretty rigid also. It seems like these stations own about 20 greatest hits albums plus Boston's first LP.

Canadian radio pretty much left them in the past. They prefer to just crank out the same 20 Canadian songs over and over.
Every time I saw them, they were the opening act.
Earl Johnson was kicked out of the recording session by the producer. Bolin was recording next door so they asked him to do some solos. Pretty sure most of them are one offs.

Loverboy was created when the guitarist left a much better band than Loverboy. Less commercial success, but Streetheart was a much better band. When Paul Dean left to form Loverboy, it was great as Streetheart got a better guitarist and the albums got better.
Eventually Tom Cochran hired most of Streetheart (minus the singer of course) which was a smart move as they are killer musicians. He then made his Life Is A Highway album with them as his band.

Man I haven’t seen this much ink on Moxy in 40 + Years. I had what I think was their first album. I remember it had an all red cover with Moxy splashed across it. At the time I guess I listened to it a few times, but it got lost or traded in, somewhere along the way. I have enjoyed the trip down memory lane with the above related links. They did have some good tunes alright.
To the point about Can-Con mentioned by DarylIM and CanadianMule. It is rather strange that we don’t hear more from them and a long list of others “Up here” Is Can-Con even still a thing????
So here’s the thing. I listen to a radio station over the web while at work quite a bit. They are out of Jerome Arizona USA, Gulch FM. Actually someone on here mentioned it and that is how I got turned on to it. So who ever it was? Thank you. I hear more Canadian artists on that station then I do in Canada, with the exception of the CBC and even then its hit and miss.
Just this week or so alone I have heard Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Randy Buchman and w/ BTO, Fred Eaglesmith, Sue Foley, Lenny Breau !!!! even heard Blackie and the Rodeo Kings awhile back and of course I’ll hear Neil also the Hip on Gulch (but I do hear them a lot of them up here, so that doesn’t really count) I could go on and on.
It seems a lot of Canadian Rock stations. It’s the Hip, Neil Young and Rush.
Anyway just one of many useless observations. Sorry not intended to change the topic of Moxy, but you know
Stay well everybody

So like Triumph? Maybe Honeymoon Suite? I have always liked both of them.
And a rather obscure one. Kim Mitchell? Go For a Soda was a radio hit that I always liked. I don't know if he had a connection to Ted Nugent but The Nug had a radio show in Detroit in the 90s and he mentioned him a few times.
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

See what happened over time is that they narrowed the number of bands that they play. Both Canadian and from everywhere else so it became the Beatles, Zeppelin, Who, Stones and then they have to play 30% Canadian Content so then it depends on which part of the country you are in. Certain provinces prefer certain bands and some other acts are coast to coast.
So you get lots of Hip, Rush, Bryan Adams, Guess Who, Blue Rodeo etc
Then each region will have something that they play to death that you never hear in other provinces.
Then with each band, they cut back on which tunes and will play the same couple over and over. Shame as lots of great music got left behind and radio lost listeners at the same time. I argued for years against cutting back on the playlists. But some VP somewhere got some f'n survey results or a computer suggested it so everyone did.
Funny you say obscure for Kim Mitchell as in Ontario, they play that damn Patio Lanterns song to death which is his worst song. 2nd worst tune is that stupid I am A Wild Party song and guess which other they play? Yeah not obscure up here. But he has so many great songs that got left behind.
Nugent connection indirectly would be more a band that was from Windsor called Teaze. They had some sort of connection to Derek St. Holmes that played with Nugent for years.
Teaze is a perfect example of a band that Canadian Radio left behind. Great live band that used to open for lots of big names and blow them off the stage. They moved to Montreal as Aquarius Records was based there. Myles Goodwyn from April Wine produced one of their albums. Never really took off. They played their first show in 39 years last year and still sounded great.
They ended up in some strange movie for some obscure reason. So I guess they figured that if their was interest then let's play.
Video from the movie.
Heartless World

Thanks for the heads up on Moxy. Heard the name ,but not the music.
Always something new to be discovered from the past. I love coming across this stuff. I just wish we could find more current/ new bands playing music like this.I
I am always digging into the yesteryears.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,
