7/9/70 ABB Stony Brook

Just listened to it for the first time, trying to upload now. So.... First there is thisCliff notes for the lazy: Moyssi was a lighting director for Stony Brook during this time. He was friends with George Geranios and Seth Dworken who ran sound. Moyssi goes to say near the bottom of the page... "My favorite fact is that we paid the Allman Brothers all of $300 for their first gig in our gym. It was a Thursday night with just ABB in 1970, followed by them opening for two shows with Mountain on Friday or Saturday. ABB did Stormy Monday, which Mountain also did as the headliner. After the early show, Leslie West wisely asked if he could open for ABB on the late show. What a friggin' wonderful show that turned out to be. They introduced Mountain Jam that night. (But I've done about 2,000 shows and mix up dates and bills and everybody's name, so take it for what it's worth.) Many, most, maybe all of those shows were recorded with permission on an Ampex 300 or 301 from the sound mixer. Seth Dworkin was the mixer--a brainiac who went on to win a Grammy with the Grateful Dead and direct satellite operations for Wall Street Journal--kept all the original recordings (made on Scotch professional 1/4" tape supplied by me). He died of Crohn's disease summer a year ago, just after we got reacquainted and he verified that he still had all the tapes. The Problem is that I can't figure out how to get in touch with the family and those tapes would need careful attention. I had a primary dub of the 1970 ABB/Mountain gig and ABB's archivist, Kirk West, told me it was the best FOH mixer recording he'd ever heard of the band. That was after they released the famous 1971 performance at Stony Brook that was recorded just weeks before the tragic motorcycle fatalities." So, long story short, I "ran into" George via the ABB Stony Brook YouTube comment section a few months ago. Today I got the CD in the mail. It is Seth Dworken's recording of the 7/9/70 Stony Brook Summer Orientation Pre-Concert. Did anyone know this existed? First off, I appreciate everyone's "Thank You"s. I cannot thank George enough for bringing this to light. I hope this helps everyone push through this painful week.

I just got up in the UK to find this link but unfortunately Anthony's account has been suspended due to too much traffic ... I will try again later ... such a wonderful epitaph for Butch to have another Duane era show come to light after all these years ... well done Anthony ...

Once converted to lossy formats like mp3, there is no merit to converting to wav, since what's lost is lost for good.

First of all Anthony, thanks so much for making this available. Converting to .WAV isn't necessarily a "bad idea", it just won't improve anything. Whatever may have been lost in the compression to MP3 (which may or may not be audible - don't want to open that can of worms) won't be restored by converting the files to .WAVs. The "bad idea" part of that would be that most folks seeing a .WAV will assume that it's an uncompressed version of the source, not one that has been created from an MP3.

Ideally if you could GET an uncompressed version, that would be outstanding. There are even lossless methods available (FLAC, SHN, etc.) to compress a .WAV that would be able to uncompressed back out to the full size with no loss of data. If you CAN'T get that then we're better off leaving things as they are.

Either way, thanks again for sharing.

I use wetransfer for live concert recordings all the time. Never a problem, so far anyways.
