My hunch is that the best way to get in touch with the family is via the WSJ. I'm sure they kept emergency contact info for him as an employee and dependent info via any health or benefits policies.

They won't give that info up to a cold-caller, but I'd start with Alan Paul who has written for the WSJ and may be able to connect you with the right people.

Attended the early ABB/Mountain show on 7-10-70. Since the setlist you have is different from the one that circulates I have to assume that it is probably the late show. I'm pretty confident from memory that the posted early show setlist is accurate. Certain that the band opened with Don't Keep Me Wonderin', performed You Don't Love, and closed with a 34 minute Mountain Jam. BTW, don't confuse these shows with the incorrectly listed 7-26-70 show in the live database (which actually has the correct 7-10-70 early show setlist). As discussed previously in these forums that show did not occur. In fact it was verified that Mountain performed at an entirely different venue on that date.

But I am so glad to hear from some one who was intimately involved with the Stony Brook concerts. Perhaps the biggest reason is that I had a discussion with Kirk West regarding another ABB date at Stony Brook, 10-23-70. The band opened for Delaney and Bonnie. Unfortunately I did not attend but I do remember the show taking place. But the news from Kirk was that tapes from this show definitely existed. The issue was that the tape holder was demanding a king's ransom for their release to the ABB organization. So if you do have further contact with George please mention this info to him. Maybe there is more than one copy of this show and it won't take an exorbinant fee to make it available.

A couple of corrections to Myossi's anecdotes. The ABB was not the only act on their first appearance at Stony Brook on 4-28-70. They were the scheduled opener for Chicago who due to a travel issue wound up playing first. A roommate of mine was at the complete show. Also, no way any Stony Brook show was the introductory performance for Mountain Jam, although there is the possibility that Mountain Jam was performed twice on 7-10-70. As Myossi himself admits things tend to get a bit mixed up after doing so many shows.

If you need any more Stony Brook info let me know. I attended from '69 to '73 so missed the earlier Doors, Joplin, Hendrix performances. Also the free 1970 outdoor performance was the Airplane, not the Starship. I made that one (after seeing Joe Cocker with Mad Dogs and Englishmen a couple of days prior). What a great time for seeing so many great acts in an intimate setting for very reasonable prices.

BTW, noticed after first posting that you had a 7-9-70 date for the show. The show I went to was definitely on a Friday which would have to be 7-10-70.

Hey Don - according to Skip, he had contacted a fellow who was on the Stony Brook sound and lighting crew who actually helped put the currently traded 7/10/70 tape together, and he had said that for everyone's info & records, the circulating material is in fact a compilation of the early and late shows from 7/10/70 and not one show. So maybe what Anthony has listed here may be the complete early or late show recording ... unless they did a warm up solo gig on 7/9?

Just to let you know I went to SUNY New Paltz from '70-'73. Went to Orange Co. Comm. College before that. Don't know who played at NP before that time but the list from the early '70s was ABB, Mountain, Ten Years After, Chambers Bros., Jethro Tull, The Youngbloods, The Byrds, Orleans, Jefferson Airplane, Van Morrison, Seals and Crofts, New Riders, Kinks, Beach Boys, etc., etc. Wow, we're gettin' old!!!! Can't wait to hear this show whether it's 7/9 or 7/10. Wow, another new Duane soundboard!!!!!!!!

A warm-up solo gig is definitely what took place on 7/9/70. Spoke with George again on Tuesday and specifically asked him about the date. He says it for sure happened on the 9th, he was in attendance along with Seth Dworken. He message said ,"Maybe 50 people in the GYM, billed as a "Orientation Pre-Concert." The 10th was the "regular concert" where the Brothers opened for Mountain. That is why the show on the 10th is shorter, it is an opening act set. On the 9th they stretched out because they could. No other act played."

Sorry to keep you guys waiting for this but it has been a crazy week at work, I promise to post the show tonight, I am starting a new job on Monday and the wife always has some "project" for me to work on.
I will say that I truly believe it is the 9th show, because I have never heard any of these versions specifically the 'Liz Reed. I listened to it twice last night and no part of the set sounded familiar in any way. It is a VERY early Midnight Rider. It's coming soon. I promise.

Yes, I do recall now that this was brought up before. Tough to put my memories up against some one who worked the show and then the tape production, although I believe Skip's contact was Myossi who has admitted that "but I've done about 2,000 shows and mix up dates and bills and everybody's name, so take it for what it's worth." Would be cool if the complete shows would see the light of day (or at least the setlists), BTW, the circulating show clocks in at around 77 minutes so there is a possibility that this could be a complete opening set. As the band were apparently closers for the late show I am sure the set would have been longer.

This all makes sense. Concert was not open to the public. Also Myossi mentions a Thursday night which the 9th was. But he does factually error when he says it was the band's first performance at the SB gym. Again that had occurred 4-28-70, a Tuesday.

Spoonbelly, being at the hipper state schools we were completely spoiled but hey, those acts had to play somewhere. 😉
