20-Year-Old "Grateful Doe" Mystery Solved

In the summer of 1995, a victim of a fatal car crash in Virginia was found wearing a new Grateful Dead T-shirt, with concert tickets in his pocket. For 20 years, the identity of the man, who came to be known as the “Grateful Doe,” went unknown.

Now, as the Grateful Doe Facebook page reports, the man’s identity has been confirmed as Jason Callahan out of Myrtle Beach, SC. Callahan’s mother filed a missing person’s report earlier this year, resulting in Myrtle Beach police collecting DNA samples from Virginia and, yesterday, confirming that Callahan was indeed the “Grateful Doe.”

The Facebook page’s post thanks those who helped in the two-decade-long search, and ends with a plea for others to file reports on their missing loved ones so that more mysteries like this can be solved. View the full post below.

Hearing about this for the first time, I've got about 50 questions that I want to ask but instead will just be grateful that his family has found closure.

Like how does a 20 year old kid go missing for 20 years before someone files a missing persons report?! 😮

no doubt ! 20 years. This reminds me of that big Watkins Glen mystery, the young couple who vanished.

I would love to know the full story here. Very glad for the family but I am very confused as to what happened here. Can anyone clarify?

How can the victim of a "fatal car crash" be found at a dead show and come home?

It sounds like he is alive (?) dos he have amnesia? How has he survived for 20 years?

How/why did it take 20 years to declare him missing?

Sounds like a happy ending but I don't understand what happened here. Can anyone explain?
