An underrated era - they played a bunch of shows that year with Jimmy Herring on guitar - he was like a part time member of the band - and Derek even by then was a mega-genius. A bunch of those shows are dynamite. Derek was already better by then than almost anyone else has ever been - doesn't matter that he was 15 or 16.

Wow. I love the old DTB stuff, especially with some Jimmy.
I think I was at that show!! Unless it was in Atlanta right before or after. It was during that brief time - maybe a few months in 1995 - when Jeff Sipe was the DTB drummer. This was after Sipe quit ARU and Yonrico was drummer for the Fiji Mariners at this time. For whatever reason it wasn't a good fit, and Sipe quit DTB and Rico then joined DTB I guess in late 95 or in 1996.
Jimmy did a few shows in 1995 with DTB's Sipe lineup, during the few dates ARU was off the road, but it was really the 1997-8 time frame when Jimmy was out on the road with DTB a lot. When Oteil joined ABB in 1997 with Jack Pearson on guitar, there was no ARU for Jimmy when ABB was on the road. So when Jimmy wasn't doing ARU he was out on the road with DTB. Also about the time of DTB recording Out of the Madness, which is why Jimmy is on about half of that record too.
Awesome time to be into that ARU/DTB/ABB scene. Lots of change going on with the various lineups from about 1994-1997.
No Jimmy, only Derek on guitar, mid 90s, Monsoons in Flagstaff Arizona, I had never heard of Derek, recognized the name Trucks, wondered if related to Butch, went in, there weren' t more than 20 of us there, no cover charge. Blew me away completely! He pissed off the keyboard player, just had his volume cranked and was wailing like Ravi Shankar - keyboardist walked off stage. Wow. Ran into them the next day on the street, "Hey Derek, fantastic show man!"
Saw this lineup. My introduction to both Jimmy and Derek. Great show! It was me , my buddy, his mistress and I he kitchen help.
Actually it was around this time of the year too. Snow was on the ground.
