In May 1971 I was driving through town and was flagged down
by a friend who asked if I wanted to see a band in Saratoga Springs.
We picked up a few more people and went to one
of the sports fields at Skidmore College where the ABB
set up at the back of a box truck(Uhaul) maybe. They
played to about 200 fans on the grass. I was lucky
enough to be in the front. They took a break and came back to
play more. Duane, Berry and all original members.
No tickets. Just a warm sunny day.

Thanks for sharing. I was a bit too young for this, but long for those days. My cousin works at Skidmore now. I will share this story with him.

I have a similar story, although unfortunately I wasn't there. Two of my best friends from high school were at UC Riverside their freshman year. In December (I think) of 1970 a band set up on an open-air platform on a big lawn in the center of the quad. My friends skipped class and spent the day listening to the band, blown away. One friend rushed back to his dorm room, got his little cassette recorder and made what I have been told is the earliest live recording of the Allman Brothers Band. You can find it on youtube, and somewhere in the archives of this site is a photo another friend took. The way they raved about the ABB made me buy their first album. 48 years later, I'm still listening.

Great stories/photo & yes, it would seem to be the earliest-known recording -- have never heard/seen one from 1969

Liz Reed must have been one of the 1st of their songs they learned, for them to have played it like they did on this tape -- blues jam>EReed, w/out a shimmy or shake

Berry Oakley, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, Jai Johanny Johansen, Gregg Allman . . Duane Allman
