Well, I've had this thing since 2009, and it usually works just fine. Well, a few days ago I decided to plug it back into my computer and load some more music onto it. I know that itunes doesn't make these ipods anymore, and I always update itunes whenever it says to get the new version. I hadn't plugged the ipod into the computer for a few months at least, and hadn't listened to it for a while and it was turned off this whole time. Could it be that itunes doesn't recognize it anymore? When I plugged it into the computer, it said that it was corrupted, and another time that it was in recovery mode and needed to be restored. Sometimes it gets stuck on the apple screen, and you have to charge it in order for that to go away. When you try ejecting it, it goes to the apple screen as well. Has anyone else had this problem? Please let me know, thanks.

It's possible the hard drive in the Ipod has gone belly up. There is a possibility that the battery is dead from lack of use and the computer sees it as a problem, try charging it and then plugging it in to your computer. Hopefully that was all it is.

Those are great little music players, I've got an 80 GB and my son has a 160 GB and both are running good.

Could be a software corruption which in case you have a chance to fix it.

Those old classics had mini harddrives in them which can also have mechanical failures or disc media issue failures. If that is the case your only option might be to contact Apple.

Here is a how to fix it article

http://geeknizer.com/how-to-fix-corrupted-ipod/

There are also youtube videos which might help.

Search " Ipod classic corruption" and you will find a number of self help articles.

If nothing works and you have an Apple store nearby you might want to take it there for them to have a look see.

Good luck

I hope you're able to fix it. In case you're not, E-Bay has many new ones on their site. I just bought one last week for $319 U.S. $. It works great and I love it.

I also have an old 160GB Classic and it still works great. A couple years ago I was having problems similar to yours and it turned out it was because of an off-brand USB cable I was using. When I went back to the original Apple cable everything was fine again.

Today the screen is stuck on the apple logo. I plugged it into the computer, and it was recognized by the computer, but not by itunes. When I eject it, it goes back to the apple screen and stays there. When I try to put it into disc mode, it either takes forever or doesn't do it at all. So I'm charging it right now, hopefully that will solve the problem.

I had the same issue.
Sorry to say, it may be the same issue I had . Sure sounds like it. Corrupt hard drive.
Had to replace.

You can do a reset by holding the top button on the click wheel and the center button at the same time. You may have to do it several times or wait for a while after each attempt.

iFixit is a great site which can help resolve many iPod issues. I completely rebuilt my iPod (40GB) with the tutorials from their site, new hard drive, logic board & battery. All the components were purchased for less than $70.00 on eBay.

I've used this fix for my husband's iPod Nano, and I believe the Classic has a click wheel, as well.

"Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears (about 6 to 8 seconds). You might need to repeat this step.

If you have difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also, make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.

If the above steps didn't work, try connecting your iPod to a power adapter. Then, plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect your iPod to your computer. Make sure that the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Try resetting your iPod while it is connected to power."

Good luck. Keep us "posted."

Well, last night it finally went back to the normal screen, and I plugged it in to charge. This morning, I plugged it into the computer, and at first the computer recognized it, but not itunes. So I got in the shower and hoped that itunes would recognize it at some point. Didn't happen. Now the ipod has suddenly disappeared from the computer list, but is still plugged in and has went back to the apple screen. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Did you try any of the fixes we all suggested? If not chances are it will not fix itself.

Have you tried the "hard restart" method I posted? iPods can and do crash, just like a computer can.

I work at a school and we deal with a lot of crashed iPods and iPads.

Here is another suggestion we use all the time on the devices at school:

To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:

--Turn off your device and leave it off (this means hold the Sleep/Wake button until you see Slide to Power Off).
--Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
--Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.

--When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.

--When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.

I know it's tedious, but if you follow step-by-step, I think you will be able to restore it. Good luck!

Sorry, my error, the recovery mode only works with devices with the "Sleep/Wake" button.

Your iPod Classic will need to use the fix I posted on 6/2. It has the "Hold" switch.

If you are charging your Ipod with a USB cable to a computer, try doing it with a wall outlet. The USB port may not provide enough power. It could also be that your Ipod battery is the problem and can no longer hold a charge, even though the hard drive is fine.

My phone accepts a micro SD card up to 128gb... that's pretty close to the capacity of a Classic, so there IS life after your Ipod dies, as long as you don't have an iPhone
