2 were DTB covers - I don't think that really counts
DTB also covered Lets Go Get Stoned
imo covering Blind Willie Johnson and Elmore James is fair game for any band - actually admirable for any band
They just did a Joe Cocker tribute, which included The Letter, and With a Little Help...
Consider that they did 4 shows at the Beacon and tried to minimized repeats
fwiw, DTB did a fair number of covers on any given night as well

I actually appreciate that they take their time and bring in outside writers and take time to develop good original material rather than just pooping it out for the sake of having a new album the way Neil Young does. I think their albums have been very strong and I hope they continue to answer when the muse calls. In the meantime, they have excellent taste and great arrangements so if they want to do 4 or 5 new covers a tour the way the GSD used to that'd be great with me. Just please don't take the "Neil approach" and churn out a bunch of rushed through half baked crap. This approach has basically ruined Neil Young

I've always defined cover bands as a band that performs songs meant to sound the same way the song sounded when performed by the original artist. TTB does not sound like any other band performing right now.
For the last 4 years I've been going to 40 - 60 shows a year. I think TTB is the most exciting and innovative touring band on the road.

Any one who writes this has not seen this band. They are the best live show out there. They are greatly inspired by Joe Cocker and have been paying him tribute, a man who made a living off of expertly re-imagining others' songs. The Allman Brothers' Live At Fillmore East only included 3 original songs and it turned out pretty good. No one faults Warren for all of the covers he throws into a set.
Hell, if "Midnight in Harlem" were the only original song TTB played, it would be more than enough. The world stops when that song starts.
Completely agree PBob especially regarding Midnight in Harlem. Very nice version at that last Bracon show: In A Silent Way to start it and the quiet and hand claps at the beginning of Detek's solo are highlights. Derek has really been crafting nice solos on this lately. Magic at the Beacon during Midnight in Harlem.
Can't be any more of a cover band than the Mule...:P

re: Cocker - it is almost hard to find a song of his that didn't sound better than the original. The greatest cover artist of all time!!!!! Toped the Beatles original twice for Christ sake

Not your flavor WF? I'm surprised. To each their own, but I think they put on a great show. Surprising.
I was at the 10/3 show. My first year only doing one Beacon show for TTB. I thank the Pope, U.N. General Assembly, Global Citizens Fest, and the weather for making this city unbearable for the two-weekend stretch that TTB were in town.
I've seen the response to TTB grow more fanatical and more rapturous. The crowd's energy was pretty amazing on the last night; I've never seen it like that for them. I remember people on this message board writing them off when they started. The only thing that has changed is their repertoire has certainly grown from those first 2 years. You knew what covers to expect at the beginning, but they've been cycling through different covers with each passing year. Their original material has also improved from Revelator to Made Up Mind, and the new songs we've been treated to lately are promising.
I was bummed out to see someone in place of Saunders Sermons on trombone, but pleasantly surprised to see Alecia Chakour. I just wish they gave her a song where she can show off on her own; she apparently was able to the previous night.
Also I finally got to drag my stubborn dad to see TTB. We would go every year to see the Allmans' run at the Beacon, and I kept insisting he would love TTB. After we witnessed the final show last October, he said "OK, now I can go see TTB", and he absolutely loved them last week.

Unfortunately I didn't get to see them this year, but have listened to much of the summer tour and the 3 Beacon shows that are on line
Another change is that the arrangements for many of the tunes change. there is more "open" improv. IMO, DTB fans that miss the "fusion" element will be pleasantly surprised.
Hoping I can catch them again sometime soon.
