Jefferson Starship, Kansas & Deep Purple tour - show review

I was fortunate to catch this show last night up in Laval (Montreal) Quebec. Starship was good with sole original member David Freiberg.

Cathy Richardson was lead vocalist with Mickey Thomas back for this show/tour. They played 7 songs, 35 minutes, quick set including

White Rabbit & Somebody to love. Vocals were good, musically excellent.

Kansas was outstanding. Eric Holmquist filling in for Phil Ehart that last original member. Joe Deninzon on violin, Tom Brislin, Zak Rizvi,

Dan McGowan, Scott Bernard played a great set. They played the hits but also much loved deep tracks.

Hold on, Paradoz, Miracles out of nowwhere and Portrait were all really good. They played a solid 80-85 minute set.

Deep Purple - I was hoping they could still play and Ian Gillen sing turns 81 tomorrow. He unlike some other senior artists sang within his

range and delivered solid vocals. Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Don Airey & Simon McBride (not easy trying to stand in Ritchie's shoes)

were outstanding. Starting with Highway Star, various keyboard (Don Airey excellent) & guitar solos that would lead into the hits.

The band was on fire. Lazy, Perfect Strangers, Space Trucking, monster Smoke on the Water with Hush as the encore.

Great set, they played a good 100 minutes. Don Airey & Simon traded organ & guitar licks like Derek & Warren.

I caught both Starship & Kansas 40 + years ago and was very happy hearing both bands. Deep Purple was a band I've followed since

Machine Head 1973, 1974 perhaps. Never thought I would get to to see them. I'm considering making a long run to Ottawa Thursday for the next show, yeah that good.

I guess it's down to Billy now. I think ZZ Top was the same band from the beginning until Dusty died.

I thought this was a damn good collection and it gained legitimacy with me when I saw that writer David Browne included Just Ain't Easy, a tune that only us true fans even knew existed. For me, it's one of Gregg's greatest tunes. Overall I really liked Browne's commentary on this collection.

Gregg and the Real Trippers

On two occasions the Allman Brothers Band let me select Peachy peeps to climb on a tour bus, travel with the Band around the country and have unprecedented access to everything ABB.

During the second trip Gregg said he might be interested in meeting the "Real Trippers." Sure enough, one night Stacey told me Gregg was up for doing it the next morning. Since the group knew so much about him, he wanted to know something about them. My task was was to write down everyone's name and brief bio for him to review overnight.

The next morning I got a call - I should have the Real Trippers all come to my hotel room, but not tell them why. Once the group was assembled I called Stacey. Soon there was a knock on the door ... Gregg, Stacey and Jasmine (their pup) had arrived!

The Real Trippers were astonished, but the experience got even better. Gregg and Stacey introduced themselves to everyone. Then Gregg told them if they wanted anything signed to run back to their rooms to get it. When they returned he also volunteered to answer any questions they had. You've never seen a happier group of people.

After about 45 minutes he said they needed to leave, but would we like a group photo first? Umm, yesss! That's the photo you see here, which Stacey took. Love you!

Being Raised Right

Being raised right means having good core values that shape your personal choices as an adult. Things like saying please and thank you, being on time, and showing respect and kindness towards others are all signs of having been raised right.

As a hostess, you learn to appreciate those things. For example, years ago the Allman Brothers Band had a day off in Raleigh before a show at Walnut Creek. That morning I asked Oteil if he’d like to come over for dinner and, if so, could I please invite a half dozen Peach Corps members to join us and meet him. He said, “sure!”, so I quickly put together a guest list and started extending invitations. Not surprisingly everyone said yes and offered happy thank yous.

Despite the short notice, guests arrived on time. With one notable exception. Oteil. I kind of wondered where he was but respected the fact that he was a busy person and something might have come up. If anyone else was concerned they were kind enough not to say it out loud.

About 15 minutes later there was a knock on the door. Oteil had arrived! He apologized for being late. He’d stopped at Kroger to pick up a salad to add to our meal as a hostess gift and that took longer than he’d expected.

Our guests! Oteil! Perfect examples of people being raised right. Love you!

Help Identifying a Red Rocks date by photos

I have about 8 photos I took at Red Rocks somewhere around the 90's. I would like help trying to identify the date. One clue is there seems to be a guest guitarist in one of the photos that I can't identify. Any help would be much appreciated!
