http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/08/28/democratic_party_419_abuse

The article tells the tale of the website http://www.democrats.org/page/invite
that spammers had found not to have any measures to prevent spam usage.

419 known e-mail scams have used the site lately, all using the "democrats.org" designation to get people to open the spam. Most are old scams including the "a wealthy relative you didn't know you had has died and left you a large sum of money" routine.

The site now has anti-spamming measures, but I'm sure that the web master, and the guy that many people believe invented the internet, are kinda embarrassed this happened.

So, if there's anything in your in-box with democrat.org on it, you might not want to open it just yet.

I've stopped opening anything that's a bulk email or from anyone I don't know. It just got to be too depressing to read each day about another member of my 'extended' family who had passed and left me so much money.

Embarrassing indeed, this is basic stuff -- especially for a website with mega money being pumped into it.

What's perhaps more embarrassing is how The Register, a supposed technical publication, refers to this vulnerability as an "open relay" (it's not) and then to completely max out credibility puts a fun political spin on the headline.

Yeah, it was posted in the "Odds&Sods" section.
