recent article in the IEEE Spectrum Magazine:

"A Guitar So Good it Plays Itself"

Human musicians, watch out. A band of New York City robot makers has begun building musical instruments that play themselves. The creations of the League of Electronic Muiscal Urban Robots recently performed at an art exhibition, including GuitarBot.

Eric Singer, who built the robot with Kevin Larke and David Bianciardi and grant assistance from the Rockefeller Foundation (NYC) told IEEE Spectrum that GuitaBot took two years to build, but in the process the League "developed a lot of robotic technology we can repurpose" for new robots.

Singer's motivation for building the robot was threefold: "First, I'm a terrible guitarist and I wanted to build something better than me, Second, I wanted to extend the options for composers beyond what a human is capable of." And the third reason? Singer grins, "Because it's ool."

To experience the coolness, you can listen to the GuitarBot perform and view it at http://lemurbots.org/audiovideo.html

I think the guy that invented that robot should have his guitar shoved up his @$$. By using machines, that totally eliminates the soul of playing. I will never listen to that. I'm no Warren Haynes, but I play and I work at it and anyone who shows even the slightest bit of effort will always be better than a robot !

The thing sounds like an electronic cross between a jaw harp and a banjo! :p

I've got no problem with the thing - it's not supposed to replace anybody, it seems like a compositional tool to me. Perhaps it'll be viable someday when it doesn't sound so damn goofy. In any case, the thing can't improvise. Perhaps someday someone will invent something that can, which could be interesting. But I'll still take Derek.

It can't improvise but you could probably program it to play millions of variations without repeating. It could end up the longest jam ever!

Machines destroy music.

Same here. I continue to hack away at the guitar but I've gotten some soul out of it on the rare occasion...

I can still remember in the early to mid 80's when programmed synths and keyboards were all the rage. Some of that stuff had merit, but a lot of it left me cold. And how much of it is played on classic rock stations now days?

Give me Guitar/bass/drums any day. And if you have to have keyboards, that's OK too. But I prefer electric piano, and organ with a rotating Leslie

Has anyone heard of a band called Particle? They are a jam band and don't sing. The have drums, synthesizer/keyboards, guitar, and bass. And they put soul and feeling into it. That's music! Soul = Music to the person making/associated with it, no matter how it sounds.

I've heard of particle but never been to a show.
I'm going to see the disco biscuits later this month.
