I think I should create a Mike Gordon thread as well. Maybe we can have 30 more by the end of the day

FROM MTV:

Phish Bassist Arrested For Child Endangerment
08.19.2003 5:49 PM EDT

A warning to aspiring amateur photographers: If you're inspired to take creative but harmless photos of a 9-year-old girl, make sure to get her parents' permission before whisking her away for a shoot.

Phish bassist Mike Gordon learned that lesson the hard way.

Last week at the Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, New York, Gordon was backstage taking pictures at a concert when he spotted a 9-year-old girl he wanted to photograph. So, he invited her to an enclosed boathouse behind the theater, an area only for use by state employees, state police said.

When the girl's parents realized she was missing, they alerted the authorities. Not long after, security officers found Gordon with the girl on a dock. The situation became even stranger when it was discovered that the girl's dad was a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang. Displeased that his daughter had been led away without his consent, the father became irate and an altercation ensued between some of his biker cronies and Gordon. The bassist was intimidated and hit, but not seriously injured, said a source close to the band.

Gordon was arrested for child endangerment and trespassing into a closed area. The misdemeanor charge is punishable with up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Police said the girl was fully clothed when she was found, and a source close to the band insisted there was nothing inappropriate about the pictures taken by Gordon. Police have issued Gordon a court date, but the band source said the family has decided not to file charges.

"We have had several discussions regarding the situation," said Gordon and the girl's parents in a joint statement. "It is now clear to all involved that this was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and we look forward to putting this matter behind us."

Mike earns first-ballot entry into the Dumbass Hall Of Fame for that one! I'm glad for everyone, especially the little girl, that it seems to have been harmless. But disappearing with the nine-year-old daughter of a Hell's Angel to take pictures in a deserted boathouse? DOH! He's lucky to be alive right now. What, was the line too long at the "Get Smeared With Blood And Thrown In A Cage With Bengal Tigers" booth?

I think I am a lot more suspicious of this than all of you. A grown man taking a 9 year old girl away from her parents to a secluded area away from any witnesses? Any reasonable adult would have at least tracked down her parents, gotten their permission and asked them to stay with them to avoid any problems. Innocent, I hope it was for the girl's sake.
At the very least he needs a reality check on what is appropriate to do with a 9 year old along with the beating from the Hells Angels he hopefully got. Sorry if I am a little much on this.
Be safe,
John

John, there is another topic in the WP on this same subject. You may want to have a read there.

Hey, maybe Pete Townsend needs a bass player? NYCscammer, I agree, he is either the stupidest person on the face of the earth regarding protocol, or it smells fishy.

I agree with NYC. If this were my daughter, I'd be hoping there were some Hell's Angels around to help deal with the guy.
On the other side, being into photography myself....I once was treated like a pedophile for standing outside the fence of a daycare taking pictures of the kids playing. You would have thought I was trying to lure them away. I was yelled at, given filthy looks, and warned with the police. I was incredibly embarassed, and horrified at being treated that way. They,on the other hand, thought they were protecting the kids. And I am a woman. *shrug* Guess with all the awful things going on these days, they can't be too careful.

Having a licensed day care here, we have to have the parents sign a consent form for any kind of pictures or video taken of their children. I take their pictures to put on x-mas ornaments every year and the parents have to sign the form before we can photograph them. They also do this through our school system.

I understand that Pam, and realize I should have asked first. My point was the over-reaction of the day care attendants. It wasn't as if I was trying to lure them over to the fence or get them off by themselves. i was standing well away from the ffence and using a telephoto lens.
I guess I felt they could have handled it differently. If it had been the other way around, I might have called to the person and asked to speak with them, explained the policy in a civilized manner, and not treated them as if they were doing something filthy when in fact, they obviously were not.

*Interesting, because many are jumping the gun on Mike Gordon without having all the facts.*

I'll jump the gun, & have to say that Mike Gordon is a dork.

*I agree, but we have the facts on that well documented in Rising Low. *

Isn't that the TRUTH. I'm not too well informed in the Phish world, so you can imagine my first impression on Mike Gordon when I saw Rising Low. He has high school "wedgies" written all over him. Like I wanted to take his lunch money.

Rising Low fell low on my expectations..... mostly due to his work on the project.

Interesting...because I didn't really jump the gun on Mike, did I? If it were my daughter, yes, I would have been alarmed and pissed that someone led her off privately and secretly to photograph her in secrecy. A little different than taking pictures out in the open, don't you think pitpat?

As for Mike...well, time and court will tell, won't it? I'm cetainly not his judge. But I do have opinions. And once again...if it had been my daughter....

I have to agree that Rising Low was a definite waste of $20. I was expecting more of a documentary on the making of the CD and on Woody's life. Instead, I got an education on how to play the bass.

Whadda ya mean?

Lee, I was wondering the same thing when I first saw Rising Low. What about Woody?

Mike Gordon is the dorkiest member of the dorkiest band in the history of dork-rock. Phish isn't exactly aiming for the "homecoming queen/captain of the football team" demographic. As a Phish fan and a member of my high school Math Team, I know what I'm talking about We didn't have any cheerleaders, let's put it that way.

Mike is a MUCH better bassist than he is a moviemaker.
