Last night I went to my local Blockbuster video to rent "Spun". The movied didn't play in theaters where I live, and I've been wanting to see it. There is a fair amount of nudity in the movie. Some of the scenes featuring nudity (especially if male genitalia was involved) were either partially blurred or blocked out with black rectangles. At first I thought that this was part of the movie. The efforts to block the "offensive" portions looked almost comical. The black bars, especially were oversized and reminded me of that REM video a few years back.

Then I found this on the internet:

... If that's not frightening enough, let me tell you about Blockbuster
Video. Blockbuster is owned and run by H. Wayne Huzengia (who also owns
the Florida Marlins, btw), who got his money to buy Blockbuster by
selling off his old company, Waste Management Inc, one of the most
notorious toxic waste dumpers in the world. Huzengia is such a hardline
conservative Christian, he will not allow any NC-17 movie in his stores,
and Blockbuster will routinely edit any movie that they don't happen to
like for content they deem going against "family values". Blockbuster
commits the same business practices that Wal-Mart does, i.e.
undercutting local video stores and driving them out. What's worse is
that, according to the S.F. Weekly, Blockbuster has gotten so powerful,
that movie studios now go to Blockbuster exectives, and have them
prescreen a movie before it ever gets released to the theatres.
Blockbuster basically gets free rein to censor any of these movies to
their liking. Blockbuster also has close ties to the religious right,
and also supports groups like Operation Rescue, and a lot of the more
dangerous fringe groups, the ones that are not above using violence to
get their way. ...

Has anybody else seen evidence that Blockbuster is active in this manner?

and speaking of hair...I heard a few years ago that men that worked at Blockbuster could not have their hair longer than their shirt collar. I'm not sure this is still the case. It sure is scary if its true that Hollywood execs pre-screen their movies for Blockbuster people.

Blockbuster moved in across from my favorite video store a few years ago and put them out of business. They were a small chain in NJ/PA but are more known for their mail order business and I think they still have a website where you can buy all kinds of movies. It might be www.moviesunlimited.com...I'll edit if that's wrong. They had a great section of cult movies...I don't think I'd ever find Glen or Glenda at Blockbuster.

I respect the ideals, values and morals of individuals. If Blockbuster decided that certain films were inappropriate and made public their decision to not offer the movies, I would repsect them (in a sense). But to take a movie and delete or obscure portions and STILL RENT OR SELL IT is hypocritical at best. They have decided that although they find a movie to be below their purient standards that they can still make a buck or two off of it.

Here's my question:
I've been to Blockbuster many a night, and if you go to any wall mount, where the new releases are, towards the bottom is where they keep all of their B-Movie Soft-Corn Porn stuff... I've never rented one, but it would seem silly that they would carry that stuff, only to block out the nudity.

well, i don't know about the whole corporate history of blockbuster video; but i can say two things:
that's the only video rental place within a 10 mile radius of my house
and
hair testing is a complete invasion of everybodys privacy. if i smoked a J three months ago the premise that i would not be qualified for a job at blockbuster video is absurd.

i need to get a DVD player so i can subsribe to NetFlix.com it seems like a good deal and little hassle.

Anyone else find it interesting that the guy made his fortune dumping waste into the beauties of nature, yet he won't allow boobies in a movie?

Frank makes a very interesting point. Says something about our values today, I guess. I'd never heard that Blockbuster censors films. Are you sure they're the ones who did it? It's possible the studio did in order to get it into stores and/or under an NC-17.

Of course, the selection at Blockbuster blows anyway, and I've heard they're moving away from movie rental and into just selling. But if you need MORE reasons not to go...

Well, I guess the obvious move on everyone's part should be to BOYCOTT BLOCKBUSTER!!!
There's nothing like a good old fashioned BOYCOTT to drive the *(%(*% OUT OF BUSINESS.
Also...
let's get the word out about this jerkoff owner-plenty of folks who might not be into BOYCOTTing becuase of censorship might BOYCOTT on account of the blatantly facist politics of BLOCKBUSTER management.
Funny how all the stars have the balls to speak out against the war, but not against Blockbuster...

Just rented Auto Focus (cool flick) at a small town video store, and IT had a blurred scene in it. Maybe its not just Blockbuster. And now I guess the ratings system isn't good enough anymore? Did they blurr out the guts in Saving Private Ryan?

Ah, Auto Focus. I did rent that from Blockbuster, and I think they blurred some male nudity in it... wasn't a lot, and of course, the female nudity was no problem. Sometimes you wonder what goes on in these guys' heads.

the world is a very scary place sometimes. and also confusing... blockbuster video does all that weird censorship stuff, and yet when wherehouse was blockbuster music (the biggest music store in my old hometown of mobile - y'all know how small towns are, it's a big deal when a chain store opens ), they sold all kinds of explicit stuff, some not labeled with tipper gore's "this is naughty music" sticker, and they sold it without any regard for people's ages. they sold me a 2pac CD when i was 14. (and i STILL look 14, so they had no excuse.)

these days, it seems that it only makes sense to go on strike from mainstream culture. maybe if enough of us do it, they'll catch on that just because the loudest people think a certain way, that doesn't make it the prevailing opinion.

you don't, after all, need a weatherman to see which way the wind blows...
