I've been reading that a lot of people aren't really very happy with the way some things are debated in the WP and maybe it's keeping a lot of folks away who might want to participate in the discussions.

What if, for the next five days, we all make an effort to de-personalize our comments? If we attack the thoughts but not the thinker? We could maybe say, 'I think that idea stinks' and stay away from 'you're crazy if you think that'.

I'm not saying we can't have disagreements with people who are posting, but maybe we could just put the comments out there for attack rather than ourselves. I'm willing to give it a go.....anyone else want to participate in the experiement to see if we can make the WP just as controversial but more welcoming to others who might want to join us?

It is a good idea. I attacked one person here once and am forever embarrassed about it. That kind of stuff really isn't needed and brings down the whole thing. I can understand that some people get provoked and it is probably hard for them to not lash back. One or two of the people who sometimes initiate the name calling are capable of making some very good points if they didn't allow their personal comments to overshadow what they are trying to say.

Not everyone likes being respectful about opinions they believe are 100% wrong, but in any event we can all learn something from each other if we allow it. So why not be nice doing so?

I always got a kick how Senators and Representatives act on the floor of Congress. "I'd like to thank my good friend from Michigan" and then they proceed to belittle them like no tomorrow. Joe Biden did this very well in the VP debate, something SNL highlighted very well.

But yes it is a good idea.

I'm good with it. I'd suggest we take it on through to election day, or even forever. Instead of using this place as an electronic punching bag, try taking a nice long walk.

There are many posts here that I don't read and I usually skip over the personal name calling, troll this and troll that, stuff that goes back and forth, but just reading over some of it in other threads now, there may be no hope for this idea working to transform the forum. It might be getting worse?

If the rest of us who want to keep the WP as a place to discuss, disagree and have some 'friendly' picking at each other ignores those who would digress to name calling and profanity and refuse to take part in it, perhaps others will decide to join us eventually. And if not, then we'll just continue on the higher road and move on to another thread. Fishermen don't troll in areas with no fish.

There are threads that I don't even bother opening that are started by certain folks here. After reading the crap they spout it's not worth my time to even see if they can have areasonable discussion. If I come across their post in an existing thread I just pass right on by. maybe if we all did so they would stop poluting this site.

attacking a person rather than debating the issue is what trolls do.

Responding to trolls only diminishes the one responding.....it's playing the troll's game. And at what point do they merge into one?

tell us

you should know

or are you conveniently forgetting the time you attacked Kirk over an article about him and one for which he had
no responsibility for the content.

Then you said you did it just to get a rise out of certain folks.

That's a troll.

This is an idea we try here on a regular basis. It lasts about as long as it takes for DFC, RBK, jpb, Dean Long, or charzie to log in. I've ignored them, tried to get along with them, and responded in kind to them. So while I do try to speak respectfully to those who have shown they are deserving of respect, the ones that come here and act like a p*ssy hiding behind a computer will continue to be treated like what they are. RBK would have already gotten knocked out if he pulled the sh*t in real person he does here everyday. He's about as obnoxious a person as I've ever encountered.

Btw, I'm sure the rest of you have noticed that the trolls never participate in this kind of thread. DFC has stirred up more sh*t than anyone in the history of this site, but when everyone else apologizes and says they'll try to do better, he is nowhere to be found, and has never apologized to anyone for anything he's done. So while we may all wish this site would be a little more pleasant, there are some here who do not want that, and will make sure it doesn't happen.

I try not to be personal, but some of these threads deal with personal issues and that can be hard.

I agree with the "Don't feed the troll" mentality, but some of the attacks are so outrageous no reasonable person can not retaliate.

But, I think most of us would appreciate it if when the back and forth starts, take it to another thread for just that, or, do it in PMs instead of the public forum so the rest of us don't have to deal with it.

As long as we're only regurgitating leftist talking points that should work fine. Sure, why not?

But the outrageous posts are designed to elicit "retaliation." The poster expects harsh words in reply, that really do them no harm (nor do the original ones harm me, for that matter). I don't understand it, but that seems the MO.

Totally agree with your 2d point; so many times I've wanted to say, "boys, boys, take it outside!" Like to PMs. I have zero interest in the various feuds among members.

I started a new thread about something important, and it got skipped over and was off the front page in a day. While reading some of the threads that replaced it would make Don Rickles cringe.

There are some crazy people here that just go back and forth like 3rd graders. It is an embarrassment. I believe the only thing to do is completely ignore the crazy people. They will get bored and move on to another board.

The world would be a better place if we all acted like that. But that is not how people react either to a troll or a person who disagrees. Politics has only made it worse.

For years, I have heard that not reswponding to them will make them go away. I personally don't believe that works because they read that solution also. Plus someone always responds.

Also many people here classify some others as trolls who are clearly not. They may be aggressive but not trolls. SCB (who I like) sees Derek as a troll but doesn't seem to realize that he comes across in a very similar way. Aggressive at times and equally not willing to give up any points. Takes two to tango. We all have different views on what is a troll I guess. Some in the WP come just to "debate/fight" and really do little else on the forum.

CM, I agree that I give Derek a good dose of his own medicine, but I challenge you to show me how I post in a similar way that he does. Every single one of his posts in this forum includes insults to an entire group of people, "the left." Please show me where I do that. My insults are aimed at particular individuals, usually DFC or one of the other trolls. And Derek is definitely a troll here. The only reason he posts in this side of the forum is to try to piss people off. I know I don't do that.

And I also challenge your assertion that I'm not willing to "give up any points." I've been proven wrong here many times, and acknowledge it when I am. I don't have a need to be the smartest person on the forum. Derek has never admitted he was wrong about anything. When he is proven wrong, he just abandons the thread.

The only reason you post here is to BE pissed off. Victimhood is endemic of the lefty mindset.

Right. Look whose doing all the whining, Dick.

At least I'm not the one so embarrassed by my vocation that I have to lie about it.

You whine constantly about our way of life changing if Obama becomes president. I've never encountered anyone who whines as much as you do.

No one who reads any of my posts here would think I would consider myself a victim of any kind. I've lived a very interesting, adventurous life. I've been places and done things you can only dream about from your cubicle in Grand Rapids. Don't shed any tears for me, troll.
