So i was looking at the setlists of a bunch of different shows, and I noticed that Blue Sky, obviously one of their most popular songs, wasn't on any of them. Is there a reason that they never play it? I've heard such things like, "oh it was Duane's song," etc etc. Can someone clarify please? Cause I'm seeing ABB in Clarkston, MI on 8/27 and "hearing Blue Sky live" is definitely on my "Things To Do Before I Die" list. I'm wondering if I'll just be making a fool of myself if I shout out "BLUE SKY!" real loud at the concert.

They play it about twice a year or so. They tend to shy away from playing it, since it is a Dickey Betts signature tune. Considering the awkward relationship between he and the Allmans these days, they seem to stay away from the songs he wrote and sang. They refuse to play some of his instrumentals, as well.

The band does not sing any songs that were originally sang by Dickey (they do Southbound which Dickey sang in concert for years but that was originally recorded with Gregg on lead vocals). Blue Sky was a brief exception in late 2004 and some shows in 2005. Gregg sang it then and they did a wonderful version of it. I'd be all-in for hearing the ABB do it again.

Dickey of course sings it at his shows.

That's interesting. Gregg does a great job on Southbound.

I'd like to hear Warren start doing Blue Sky. Or any other song dropped off the set list because of the Dickey connection for that matter. Blasphemy, I know for you purists, but for me would be a dream come true.

They've been playing Jessica and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed quite a bit this tour (hoping for one of those tomorrow night!) but as far as the songs he sings on nothing. I agree, I would very much enjoy hearing Blue Sky at Pine Knob.

Believe me friend, there will be people making fools out of themselves that has nothing to do with shouting out "Blue Sky".

Go for it, you bought the damn ticket. F*ck what everybody else thinks.

Dickey still does it with the "Franklin Tower" intro then going into "Blue Sky". I was never a fan of the Dead, but I always enjoyed this version

Yeah he does, and virtually every other song he does is played at EVERY show. Boring!
And people complain when the ABB repeats even ONE song. Go figure.

I think that when the Brothers did Blue sky several times in the fall a couple of years back was because they were doing a show for XM radio to celebrate the 30 or 35th anniversary of the release of Eat a Peach and they were to recreate the whole album live for that broadcast. Other than doing as a sort of rehearsal leading up to that show, they have not done the song. It is one of my favorites as well and If you want to hear it live, you NEED to check out Dickey the next time he's in your area. Saw him in June and it was one excellent night of music. He did both Blue sky and Ramblin Man in his show that night. Whenever I need a mood uplift, I go to An Evening With the ABB First SEt and that Blue Sky always makes me smile! Warren used to sing a the first verse, then Rob Barraco the 2nd, then unfortunately Phil would close out the song when Warren was touring with Phil and Friends several years back. Warren does a great job on that vocal. It sure would be a nice surprise to see them bring the song back with Warren on lead vocal.

The XM radio program was really cool. Gregg talks about how he never thought he'd be singing Blue Sky. I got it in trade and its a great listen.

Me too, but after hearing it once, you knew it was coming.

Dickey frequently changes his set lists. I have shows from this tour with some new originals that are great that he hasn't played at every show.

I've won many a bet that Dickey will play Blue Sky - one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time - the 4th song of the show. It's like clockwork. Some love that, some don't. I'm glad to hear it at his shows.

That said, one of the things I love about the ABB is that, other than the encore, you never really know what's coming, song-wise. That is very different from the last few years Dickey was in the band.

The SKYDOGS have 'Blue Sky' in their set lists and play it at most shows as it is
requested often. We use the 'Franklins Tower' intro.....

It's a great song, I could never blame anybody for wanting to hear Blue Sky. The 9/19/71 version from the Stonybrook archive release is some of my favorite music ever.

However, I wouldn't get your hopes up. They haven't played it since 10/10/04.

One of the reasons I love seeing Dickey play is that I know I'll hear Blue Sky AND Jessica.

I don't know. I read an interview with otiel on here from a couple weeks ago and he said he hoped they could fit blue sky in...
