The best viewing time will be between 1:30 a.m. and dawn on Tuesday the 12th. To see them get as far away from city lights as possible and have clear and very dark skies. Then simply lay back on a lawn chair or sleeping bag facing northeast. To see the most meteors you should stay up until dawn. No binoculars or telescopes are needed. Simply slowly scan the skies back and forth and up and down and you should see a couple dozen Perseid Meteors .

Anyone gazing at the summer night sky for even a short length of time is likely to spot a few "shooting stars" darting across the sky.

At its peak around the nights of Aug. 11 and 12, this display can produce 50 to 100 fast, bright meteors per hour.

Thank you! I'm hoping our skies clear up in time to catch this. I think I actually saw one on Friday night when I was sitting outside...

Thanks for the heads up, sista Ayla. This is a must see - or at least "try" to see. I caught it a few years back in Georgetown outside Washington DC - lived in an ancient apartment building with formal garden complete with pond, lily pads, frogs and peeing cherub. Lots of concrete benches, all covered at 4AM with sleepy tenants in their PJ's (some just boxer shorts!) gazing towards the heavens. Don't know what I'll see this close to NYC but just one shooting star will do.
Remember, MAKE A WISH!
