Gordon (Shavian) has just reminded me about that picnic I suggested. I know it's only a couple of days after Mrs Trucks plays the 100 Club (which a good few of you are going to), but how about Saturday 1st August? Reason for suggesting this date is we could have a nice picnic and a few shandies , meeting say 2.00/3.00pm in Hyde Park (weather permitting & alternative suggestions welcome) and then head off to "The Betsey Trotwood" in Faringdon to see The Snake Oil Rattlers (8.00pm), so that Barry actually knows what it's like to play in front of a crowd (only joking Barry!). Sorry Barry, I realise that this may inhibit your intake of afternoon shandies somewhat, or maybe not!

Anyone up for that?

Nah you're right it wouldn't. I'd love to go to a picnic in the park and catch up with you all. I'd have to shoot off a little earlier though as we're playing with a fill in bassist and will need a run through. It'll be the Rattlers first gig with a bit of electricity too.

Philippa works on Saturdays and is going on the holiday early the next day but I'd be up for anything.

Starting to look like just the usual suspects as Kaz (Mrs R) can't make it either. So a late afternoon meet-up for a beer and a meal then off to Barry's gig? any suggestions where?

Barry, what time are you scheduled on stage?

Looks like we could do worse than go direct to the Betsey ... Shepherd Neame Ales and good pub grub according to the attached review ... and as it is such a small venue we will get favourable seats by getting in a bit earlier ... maybe a back stage pass

Just been on to Barry via email - he's down at the Betsey tonight, so he'll find out what time the Rattlers are on. Said it was early last time. I'm hoping to make either the 2030 or 2300 train from Paddington, as I've got to organise the kids music group at church next day.

Hope they've got some Aspalls on tap!

The following is copied from Barry's email to me -

"I spoke with the promoter last night and he said that we'll be on at either 9pm or 10pm. He still has to finalise the the line-up so I can't be clearer. We'll be playing a 30-40 mins set so you should have problems getting back to the station for the train. They're really strict on the times soon so we won't be over running or starting late.

They'll be 3 acts which are normally a pretty good standard so you may want to get there earlier. I think some bluesy cockney fella is opening or something."

Think he means "should be no problems"!

I'll probably book the 11.30 from Paddington, so there's no need to rush away. Will probably aim to get into London early afternoon for some CD browsing, before heading for the Betsey for 4ish. How's that meeting time for everyone else?

J.

Sounds good to me, Jim!

Just been reading about the Big House Museum opening in December. Road trip to Macon next Feb/ Mar anyone?! BA fare to Atlanta booking today is 243 return.

I've been to Macon but would go back for the museum.

I have things to do at home during the day ... so I will be aiming to get to the Betsey at about 6-ish ... I intend to get the 11-30 from Paddington too Jim ... as it is the last fast train back to Reading ... not intending to book a seat though ... suppose I can always sit on your lap

look forward to seeing you guys then ... will be in touch nearer the time ...

This is certainly something that's on my "things to do" list, but not in 2010, unfortunately. A "Road trip" as you suggest would be a great idea, but I'd be looking to tie it in with a gig or two and a visit to other musical sites. Memphis & New Orleans are on my hit list, but as my geography's crap, I don't know how practical that would be in one trip. A week's about as long as I could push for being away on a music-related trip and I'm working on a three-year cycle plan for trips to the US, so 2012 is about the earliest I could do. (Unless the lottery numbers come up!)

I have a similar plan in my mind Jim ... and those places are a long way apart so to do it in a short time will be expensive because it will mean flying rather than driving or going by bus ... but my plan would be to fly to New Orleans - 2 days there - transfer to Memphis - 2 days there - transfer to Atlanta - day trip to Macon - finally see ABB in Atlanta before flying back home ... probably looking at a 10 day trip ... 2012 for my 60th birthday present seems like a good idea

The next time I retire (for good, I hope!), I'm going to do The Blues Highway trip from New Orleans to Chicago.

I won't be doing it in a week, though!!

That is certainly some trip there Gordon ... don't think I would get away with a 28 day pass from Janet though ... a short 10 day one would probaly just about be workable ... she might even come with me ...

NEW VENUE ALERT

Charlotte Street Blues Club. 74 Charlotte street.
Kinda small but good sound. The food looks ok and the beer (by London standards) isnt too expensive.
Saw the magnificent Matt Schofield Band last night. Excellent gig. Good idea to get there early or you wont see much.

Another top night in the company of Mr. Schofield.
I suspect he won't remain our best kept secret for too much longer.

Might give the Simon McBride gig a go on 7th Aug.
