What does the name stand for, and who thought of it?

I heard a story that Woody, Warren, and Jaimoe were watching James Brown play in New Orleans. During part of the show James Brown's wife comes out on the stage. When Jaimoe sees the size of JB's wife's ass he says,"Gov't Mule" and Woody loved it and said that's gonna be the band's name.

I think that's how it went. If anyone knows better or could clarify I would apprieciate it.

Warren says it best:

"We usually say that Gov't Mule means something different to everyone, and leave it at that,'' Haynes says with a laugh. "But since you pressed, I guess I'll tell you. . . .''

As Haynes relates the story, Jaimoe and Woody were watching James Brown perform at a music festival in Memphis headlined by the Allman Brothers. At one point in the show, Brown was dancing with his wife, and Jaimoe pointed at her ample rear end and said "government mule.''

"Woody just laughed, and thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard,'' Haynes says. "It's like some sort of Mississippi colloquialism and totally Jaimoe. It just cracked us all up, and we decided to name our band that. Not that that's the only reason. You know, the name meant a lot of things, but that's where it came from. Usually we call the band 'the Mule' among ourselves.''

You were very close.

I can never remember the exact telling personally, but the story is an interesting one about a bunch of guys sitting around and having some good laughs. Maybe at someone else's expense, but harmless nonetheless.

I think they talk about it in the Rising Low DVD. As the story (and song) goes.. In the 1860s freed slaves were promised 40 acres and a mule. The mules were in pretty rough shape. Their spines were shaped like a U and their rear ends were wide. So a gov't mule is low quality animal. Listen to "Mule" lyrics.

I think Jaimo said something like "she got an ass live a gov't mule". After James Brown's wife died, Warren revealed exactly who Jaimo was talking about.

matt abts says in some interview somewhere maybe on rising low about a gov't mule being a work horse of an animal, no pun intended and he says well we were a work horse of a band I will have to see what that is on
