On thursday & friday of last week,i took out the LAFE album for 2 complete loud listens...i try to listen to it 3-4 times a year....each time i hear new things & feel the magnitude of this album...a couple of observations which are probably pretty obvious to most of you,but a chance to rediscover its essence, its freshness & new thoughts here & there:
DUANE was playing a wide range of musical stuff---i heard the world music style, jazz, straight on rock & much more, but uniquely placed in a bluesy context. The seeds sprouted on each particular style for DEREK to explore them,& i am in love with DEREK's sound, but it's important,IMO,to recall the seeds planted by DUANE.
When DUANE plays i actually hear the electricity of the amp & guitar at times---he was so plugged in to what he was doing.
DUANE's selection of leads & notes to play are unususal & quite interesting.
i hear the CHUCK BERRY style in DUANE/DICKEYs' interplay---the seeds of certain sounds planted for WARREN.
GREGG's B-3 playing is the blue sky creating a canvas for drawing used by the ABB---it is the background color for what they do.
BERRY's bass playing defines the specialness of the ABB--he is Scottie Pippen to DUANE's Michael Jordan & while a musical extension of DUANE he also pulls the sound together in a way that very few bass players do or have ever done. His playing is simply a miracle--a wonder of musical nature!!!
Drums--BUTCH holds it all together & gives JAIMOE the room to play jazzy licks that perfectly complement BUTCH & the rest of the band.
DICKEY plays perfectly in sync with DUANE & it's hard to miss the little country blues fills you hear in the mix.
The completeness of the sound, the heartfelt & anguished singing by GREGG reminds me why this band pulled me in & of the truly one of a kind sound they created.....& that's after listening to this album, who knows how many times, since its release till today & onward!!
And,IMO today's ABB brings it's own magic....but important to recall & respect beginnings....

LAFE always reminds me of why I got interested in playing guitar...mostly it was Duane's playing, not to cop his licks but to hopefuly tap into something inside of me and create...an ongoing process to this day.

A play a day keeps the doctors away....

(not a full play but a song or two from the lp. Works for me)...

I said AT LEAST.

3 to 4 times a month = once a week. And then there's all the traded shows and Sugarmegs I have to cram in there too.

great thread Two Dads.......do-dah do-dah.

one has to include the live cuts from EAP so "The Fillmore Concerts" cd is my playing copy of The Live at Fillmore East experience.

the B-3 sound Gregg lays down does set it up and carry it at critical moments and allows the band to "hug each other".........especially that part in Mtn Jam where the guitarz play the hard straight rhythm.

ahhh........the bird calls!!

I always wonder why Dreams is not there?

The harmonica playing of Tom Doucette is so so critical to their sound too and makes several of those songs he plays in.

If possible, listen with headphones cranked as loud as you can tolerate -- seriously! I know this will make it harder to enjoy it socially, but you'll hear nuances that you can't perceive with speakers. There's an indefinable, indescribable sizzle to the music as your ears open wide and grasp the full tonal range of the audio spectrum (once in a while I wax eloquent. This is that time....). If you're really lucky, you may find yourself pasted against the wall with the cord stretched taut. This image gets something of the idea across:

(Why can't I get pictures in my posts any more? Isn't the code above correct? It looks like what everyone else uses. Sigh!)

Of course, this makes it more challenging to do as a social event, unless you use all kinds of splitters, etc. so you can run several sets of 'phones.

Try to stop just short of brain damage, but if that happens, at least your last memories will be pleasant ones

I get my fill from The Fillmore Concerts as well. While I listen to all of the songs on a regular basis, as in at least once a week, this summer I have listened to disc 1 an unbelievable amount. I was listening to the entire album about once a day, if not more for over a month. I still listened to Hot 'Lanta, Whipping Post, and the other songs on disc 2, but for the sake of convenience with the cd player in my car I never changed (that and as a whole I like disc 1 a little more). Time and time again I heard new things and just blown away. I was listening to Liz reed multiple tmies a day, the song, all 13 minutes of it have been ingrained in my memory leaving me short of breath every time I listen to it.

One of those cool things I noticed is Berry's bass line in Liz Reed as Duane's solo builds up the second time. I'm not entirely sure when it starts exactly, but around the time duane is doing that crazy tapping type thing you can feel the bass line growing. It climbs and climbs as Duane explodes into an unbelievable lick that he transitions into the very fast hammer ons/offs to round out perhaps the greatest guitar solo ever.

I can't wait......Ain't it cool how they start out YDLM with the middle section now! If that ain't the current lineup paying homage to Duane, Dickey, and Berry I don't know what is. As far as those who say "it just isn't the ABB without them" I don't agree. It's not the same, but it is with the same passion, and drive. That's what hittin the note is all about. Not doing it the same, or always with the same lineup, but doing just right!

Bring on Charlotte Baby!!!!!!!

It is. Yet when I viewed the source, and copied the that you used, I still got the same results.

'Tis a mystery. But I think I'm starting to figure it out.

Sigh.

At Fillmore East is one of those special things, that never ages and always remains golden. I remember being 14, two years ago and first enjoying it. Its truly an incredible recording. I would like to see a true "deluxe edition" with mountain jam out of whipping post, but instead of the eat a peach/final fillmore stuff, outtakes from the actual sessions. Like Dreams, as the one guy screams out a few times during the album (i just heard him do it in DSBW). Alot of people think Dreams should have been included. I think if Duane would have lived, thier second live album would have included that. It would have opened with Don't Keep Me Wonderin', then One Way Out. It would have Mountain Jam, and Dreams, and some other new material that was never made that Duane and Berry would have done. But thats a whole new subject that doesn't need to brought up.

Best album. ever.
