from a review of the soul stew revival in san francisco...inside bay area:

"The raspy-voiced singer did a fine job taking the occasional lead, especially during some of the funkier numbers, but Tedeschi's presence made him seem like an afterthought."

i say we do something about this critic

I read that as well man. The entire tone of his article was biased towards Susan (not that I have anything against her!) and really slighted everyone else in the band. It is amazing that people like that are allowed to write for news publications.

it only puts her more on the side of being the yoko ono for dtb, ruining the band for everyone....but she sings good, yoko doesnt, but mike is way better

The Yoko thing is below the belt--whether Derek reads this or not think about it if you were him & he did see that comment-- it's his wife, his love, his soulmate, his family member---the so called music critics IMHO are mostly ignorant or biased fools & what they emphasize too often miss the point...jzup90-- i mean no disrespect towards you & we can debate the musical merits of all this anytime & we'd all learn from it & have some fun indulging our passion for music, but who sings better may either be irrelevant or open to personal taste, but the vitriol of the yoko remark,IMHO is an uncalled for personal attack & goes way too far...nothing personal, but that's merely an opinion---again my intent is not to defend the dopey critic, but why stoop to a mean spirited level---i'm sure in the light of day you may reconsider.....peace

So he thought Mike was underused? Do we need to beat him up or something for that? It's a legit idea - this band plays a few long instrumentals as it is and now it's splitting the vocal songs between two singers.

I've never been much of a Mike fan so I'd take Susan over him anyday of the week. He's not bad rather he's just not my cup of tea so to speak. I've always felt that his voice, while good, doesn't quite fit with the music of DTB. Just my two cents.

I respectfully disagree. I can't imagine anyone other than Mike singing with the DTB.

About the critic though. You have to take into consideration that this isn't a DTB tour. It's advertised as Derek Trucks/Susan Tedeschi so you can't expect Mike to be up front all the time or to get rave reviews from critics that aren't familiar with the music. I do feel somewhat bad for Mike though because during one performance I think he introduced Down In The Bottom as one of his "favorite songs of all time" or something close to that, and now Susan sings it. Also I think Mike's voice would fit better on a couple of tunes they are doing, especially that Aaron Neville song. That's strictly my opinion. It's still good either way, but I was hoping Mike would take that.

I agree with your symapthy for Mike, I've always wondered how he feels about sharing time Susan, especially on tunes that he'd really like to sing. I'm guessing they have the sharing thing all worked out internally amongst themselves, or one day we just won't see Mike around anymore... I dunno.

I'm not sure anyone would let Mike go. He's too talented. To me personally, Mike is very very close vocally to the level where Derek is on guitar if that makes sense. His only problem is that people aren't ready for that from a vocalist. They want to hear the next American Idol instead, or any female singer in general. Tell me the last time you've heard a male vocalist get national attention that wasn't either a) on American Idol or b) constantly on MTV.

You know, I don't think Mike minds that he has to share the vocals with Susan. In the few shows I have listened to, it seems Susan is stepping on his toes, for example Soul Serenade.
But when Scrapomatic is opening for the band, Mike does a lot of singing in one night... he has to preserve that gift so he doesn't lose it.

Oooooooh yeah. Forgot about Scrapomatic opening those shows. Very good point. You're probably right.

That's an important point, especially in light of the fact that Susan is better known than the DTB west of the Mississippi, so her recognition helps to fill the venues. Notice they aren't so fast to bring the tour to the east coast, where Derek has played frequently the last few years. And after the Soul Stew dates, it's back to the DTB in Canada, then Europe and japan... Mike to not going away anytime soon...

I enjoyed the Mt Winery show from the second row. While Mike doesn't have a lot to do during the soul stew part of the show he was very much envolved even when just watching the other performances. I got the feeling they are all fans of each other and didn't notice any animosity amongst the band.

In reference to the "Female or male singer comment".
I find it hard to get my male friends & relatives to listen to any female singers. Even stuff like Heart or Janis. I dont understand why????

Ah, that is a shame! There are so many great female vocalists. Ella, Billie Holiday, Nina, Sarah Vaughn, Yma Sumac, Anita O'Day, Aretha, Mahalia, Etta Jones, Eva Cassidy, even new artists like Neko Case or Norah Jones. Just too many to list.

I agree with most of the comments above. With Mike opening as well, he definitely has his share of singing as well as mentioned. I just thought the author's wording could have been a little better. No complaints as far as that tour is going though! Either way, we are all getting great music!

no lame critic's review could ever dispute the fact that both mike and susan are extremely blessed with talent...i think everyone needs to stop reading these biased reviews and just start listening man

MM - great singer. hugely better than the last guy...

some of us miss the Mark 1 version version of dTb...a hippie jazz band.

used to be a couple of vocals and many instrumentals, now the opposite.

ST is great as well, maybe not as edgy...she's compromising her career a bit...mom and wife bit.

it's mighty hard to make a sustained living in da muzic biz...
