I had the great pleasure of seeing Moe at Highline Ballroom last night in NYC. I had only seen them one time before, about three years ago when they opened for the Allmans at SPAC. Highline Ballroom is a new venue, just opened last week. It is located in the middle of the fruit district in Chelsea, lower west side, 16th Street b/t 9 and 10 Ave. In other words, nobody really cares what's going on down there at night. A very cool venue, very much like Irving Plaza (no seating), except about 1/2 the size. The vibe inside is just right, there is security around, but they do not bother the crowd. Moe is playing 5 consecutive nights, starting last Wednesday, and through Sunday. Last night's show was excellant. I did not know any of their songs, which can sometimes be a problem, since there is definately a "learning curve" when seeing a band for the first time. But I quickly learned that, with the talent in this band, there is no learning curve. They have duel lead guitars, and both guys really jam it up, and are versitile. The lead singer is the bassist, who stands front and center. He has a good voice, not great, but seems to be the heart and soul of the band. He was drinking on stage, having fun, and obviously smoked at the set break, because his eyes were barely open during the second set. It did not stop him from playing or singing, and he was smiling from ear to ear most of the time. The have a percussionist who plays a zylophone (spelling error?), and he adds a cool keyboardish quirky sound to the mix. The band doodled and harmoized like the Dead, improvised like Phish, played some Reggae, and rocked like Gov't Mule. They even did a great cover of Summertime Blues, complete with the Enthwistle vocal parts. They have some really great jamming tunes, which they used like the Allmans, at the beginning and ends of the sets. The crowd is a younger version of Allmans, with most being veterans of 15 or so shows. They were drinking and dancing, and who knows what...and it was really fun. No problems at all. Bottom line, if you can get to one of these shows, I expect you will not be sorry.

They are clearly a differant band when they are on their own. Try it again.
