2006 isn't over yet, of course, but by now we should all have some good nominations. Here are two...

1) Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, 10/28/06---Even as a big ARU fan, I was totally blown away by this show. Bobby Lee Rodgers of the CodeTalkers adds a lot to anything he does, and he proved he could hang with anybody on this night. As happy as I am to see Jimmy Herring, Oteil and Jeff Sipe getting high profile gigs with other bands, if you haven't seen them with ARU, you just don't know what they are truly capable of. Highlights included the most outrageous "Time Is Free" I've ever heard in the first set, and great versions of "Compared To What" and "I'm So Glad" in the second set.

2) Red Hot Chili Peppers, 10/26/06---I know I'll be mocked by some for this one, but I don't care. I hadn't seen them in over ten years and was amazed and delighted by what a great show they put on. Much more jamming and improvisation than I was expecting. John Frusciante is a VERY underrated musician, probably the closest guitarist in style and tone to Jimi Hendrix that I have ever seen in person. Many of you probably wouldn't enjoy their punk/funk style, but if you enjoy their music, go see them live when you can. You might want to bring earplugs, though--probably the loudest concert I've ever attended!

As far as non-splinter bands in the ABB family, The Wreckers at Harrahs Voodoo Lounge in Kansas City, Missouri. Yes, I like the Wreckers !

Best show I've seen,,,,probably the best show I've seen in my life but this does include splinter bands would be dTb Athens, GA on 3/31/06

Who has a recording of this show ?

Oh, another one I just recalled...

Lefty Collins and the No Mercy Band - Sat. 10/7/07 - GABBAfest

Without a doubt, the best Mountain Jam I have ever heard that was not played by the ABB.

The reunion of the Hampton Grease Band 6/2/06
as Glenn said, "they said we were too old and feeble--and they were right!"

for once I agree with every word of a review--

Without a doubt, Clapton 10.21.06 Jacksonville.

Been a Clapton fan forever, but never saw him live...thought I had "missed" the good years, so never bothered. The MTV Unplugged thing he did ruined me...I never want to hear that version of Layla again (the slow acoustic version.)

But...he blew me away live!

It sounds surprising but Rat Dog at the Beacon was the best non ABB/Mule show I saw in 2006.

Bobby was ON that night.

The Susan Tedeschi Band featuring Ron Holloway and Warren Haynes guesting - Bospop Festival, Weert, Netherlands (july 9th 2006) was my second favorite show and the favorite was Eric Clapton with Derek Trucks, Rotterdam Ahoy, Netherlands.

Yeah, the Mule sets at Wanee were superb, also. As was the midnight dTb set at the Mushroom stage.

Bruce Springsteen and the Seeger Sessions Band - Camden, NJ

Sonny Landreth, Shakori Hills, NC and Philly (my first and second Sonny shows...won't be my last!!)

Jimmy Hall at GABBA (he took us to CHURCH, baby!)

ALL of the bands at GABBA especially one that sells thongs

Lefty and the No Mercy Band...wherever I'm lucky enough to see them

Beacon weekend jams at the Hittin' the Note Party and the Left Coast Party.

I intentionally did not include any "family" bands like Dickey, Susan/Derek, Mule...they all go on the list without saying
