I just got off the phone with someone who works at MSG (he is helping me work out all the details with the Derek Trucks Band concert).

He told me that yesterday, MSG sent the contract to the Beacon to lease it for 35 years. They expect the contract back on Monday. The other company which is in contention with MSG to purchase the Beacon is Live Nation, but right now, things are looking good for MSG to purchase it.

This person told me that the Allman Brothers would still be there come March. He also said that all construction would start in 2008, not 2007. The construction would be to re-model the venue to be more like Hammerstein, except a nicer version. They would make a GA floor with the option of folding chairs for select concerts, and have a balcony with seats where people can just chill out and relax. He said that this increases merchandise sales and vendor sales because they can be dispersed around the outskirts of the floor.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that the Beacon WILL NOT be under construction in 2007, but rather in 2008. He doesn't know what is going to happen with the ABB in 2008 (obviously not), but he proposed the idea that they would play either the Theatre @ MSG or Radio City.

Why remodel it? It's beautiful and the way it is.

He said that the thought it was one of the nicer theatres in New York City right now, but that it needs to be re-modeled. Modeling it after Hammerstein, just a better version of Hammerstein, he said, would bring in bands which would never consider playing the Beacon as it is now. As was stated, there would also be the option of putting out folding chairs over the floor for a concert like James Taylor.

If the Stones are playing the Beacon now, any band would play it. Just my opinion. I think the folding chairs is stupid... the reason the Allmans play this theatre is because it's symbolic to the Fillmore.. not completely, but very close.

Another example how the big guy pushes around the little guy.

Why would a Chinese food additive want to purchase the Beacon?

Make more money through merchandising. it's not about keeping the uniquiness of the Beacon, it's about changing it to suit their view to make more money from different bands.
Spin it any way you will it's about someone bigger than the Beacon sticking their hands in something to make it their view of better.
End of another era.

I'm not sure but I think the Beacon is a historic building which is bound by the codes of the historical society so they can only restore it not change it. May be wrong but I think that is how it works. Not having seats on the floor is a mistake. Could end in someone being crushed. Whatever happens I am so happy I got to spend three nights at the original Beacon in 2005 and seven nights in 2006. I hope it continues in the tradition that has become a step back in time and space.

GA on the floor?

$ure, why not?

You can pack three time$ a$ many folk$ in if you do away with seats.

Bravo.

Maybe the band should find an alternate venue and forget about the new and more corporate $$$$ friendly Beacon.

very sad.

I was happy to see the new paint job...but I have to say, in recent years, the Beacon had looked pretty sad. There are ways to refurbish and not lose the integrity of the space. I am glad to hear that a there won't be a wrecking ball flying through it!!! Going to see Brian Wilson there...hubby loves the Beach Boys...40th Anniversary of Pet Sounds...2nd row...should be nice!

Careful now.

He may be number one at MSG.

Vin's buddy's dad is number five.

He may tell on you.

Damn shame if true.

I can't imagine our Syracuse Landmark Theater taken over by Clear Channel.

Sadly, I dont think there are any places like The Beacon left in NYC.

Looks like we better enjoy every moment of Beacon 07.

Only alternative in NYC not owned by MSG that they would possibly play is The Nokia,I think.

I'm glad to see they're using the Landmark more, even if the greatest bands in the world arn't playing it, least it's being used for once.

Yup.

07 at the "real" Beacon.

08 wherever.

09, probably the "Farewell" year, crammed like sardines on the floor, with vendwhores walking through the crowd, selling beer and popcorn, like a freaking baseball game.

That should make some $$$ for the MSG guys.

GAF played there before they discovered Turning Stone.

Same with Alice Cooper.

Saw Damn Yankees and Jackyl there, from the front row.

Also saw Bob Dylan there.

And Mule with New Earth Mud.

Lots of good shows there over the years.

I believe even DMB played there when they were first starting out.

(Mouse) My brother saw Motley Crue there one year.

At the end of Gregg's show at Nokia on Wed., he said, just before they walked off stage, "see you in March". I guess it just depends where. Excellent if it is still at the Beacon. I think the Beacon could definitely use a bit of a makeover. But, not ruin the basic layout of the theater. Cleaning the place up and making some sound improvements would be fine.

If anything, maybe some simple stuff like new carpeting and maybe some painting.

Oh, and restrooms on the Loge level

I think cosmetic touch ups are fine...remodeling that beautiful place is insane.... can't they leave some character and charm to the way it was ....

Well, I guess this thread will be seeing lots of action...

Personally, I am not going to get overly worried about this right now until its confirmed about the exact plans they have for "our" theatre and when. It would be shame however, if they killed the Beacon as we know it, by doing too much to it. Some cosmetic upgrades would be nice, but basically its beautiful to me just the way it is. I have probably seen more rock shows there over the years than any other venue.

Look at it this way guys, We know we are at least safe for one more year and maybe even 2008 if the renovations don't start until after March of '08 which is always possible since these types of projects have a tendency to take longer than expected. Its my own "personal opinion" that The ABB most likely only have 3 years left of fairly steady touring anyway, which would take them into 2009. After that its anyone's guess what may happen. They could certainly retire or semi-retire by that point considering the ages of the original members. I definitely don't see them doing Radio City again, I saw 3 shows The ABB did there in 1995 and the place is just too big IMO and it loses the intimacy factor which the band loves...and so do we. The band obviosly didn't didn't like it either since they went right back to The Beacon in 1996 and have played there ever since. Again, no sense in getting too crazy about this just yet until we have a bit more info. Until then, it's 74th and Broadway in '07...see ya there as always.

EVERY show I've ever been to at the Hammerstein was way oversold due to that GA floor. I recall several WSP and Rat Dog shows where I didn't even really bother to get past the lobby. BAD IDEA .

Enjoy 2007 because anything after will not be the real deal.
