Here's My Review, pictures below:

quote:
It was Friday the 13th, where you would expect nasty whether—but driving to see Gregg Allman & Friends kick off their fall tour at The Magic City Music Hall, a quaint little music hall, the weather was exactly the opposite; Blue Skies and Sunshine. I got there just when the doors were about to open, grabbed a bite to eat (very good food). There was a diverse group of folks ranging from wearing the Harley Davidson attire, to deadheads, to youngins like myself. However, many of the folks that were there had no idea what they were about to witness; contemplating whether Dickey Betts was going to show up, or Warren Haynes was going to sit in—mentioning Dickey Betts was the most ridiculous rumor I heard before Danielia Cotton was about to hit the stage. A few moments later, lights dimmed, and Danielia came on stage. I didn't know what to expect, I had never heard of her. But to those that are going to see her opening, you're in for a thirty-five minute set of new age gospel, soul, and a variety of blues originals. She has the pipes of Susan Tedeschi, and the growl of Shemekia Copeland. She's really going to be the next big name in female vocalists. After her set, I went to get her new CD, and picked up her first release with her newest CD Small White Town. She said she was going to be signing after her set, but as Gregg was about to hit the stage, I didn't want to lose my seat.

It was just about nine o'clock when Gregg and Friends hit the stage. Gregg came right out and picked up his Strat as Neil Larson sat behind Gregg's Hammond. I knew right away that we were going to hear that funky version of Whipping Post. Highlights of that song were hearing Jay Collins solo. The whole song is just arranged differently than the Allman Brothers original version of the tune; I really liked it. Don't Keep Me Wondering was the same way; differently arranged. I really liked this song because Jack Pearson, formally of The Allman Brothers Band for a three-year tenure during 1997 until 1999, really shined during the ride out. The one song that really caught my attention and always will is Ocean Awash The Gunwale. This song is just one of the most beautiful songs Gregg has written with the exception of Multi-Colored Lady. There were many Floyd Miles fans in the house after this show as well. The whole night was very special, and the band was really having fun and really had it together for their first night playing together. Jerry Jemmott is one fine bass player. Gregg mentioned during his introductions that Jerry has played with everyone from Aretha Franklin to all the Kings; Freddie, Albert, B.B., etc. After seeing this show, and Jack for the first time, I have a new appreciation for him. He has a whole different approach to the guitar. He's not one of those turn your amp to full blast and overpower the whole band type players. His dynamics and phrasing are different then anyone I have ever seen before. Applaud for Jack Pearson! Jay Collins had a majority of the solos, along with Neil Larson—two phenomenal musicians, there's not much else to say. Well done guys! For those that are catching the boys this tour, you're in for such a treat—two hours or more of great music. For the greatest hits fans, keep an open mind, because this lineup is not an oldies review of themselves. Either way you won't go home disappointed.

Awesome!! Very nice! I'll be in Boston tonight and I am so looking foward to it! I think you hit the nail on the head with how you explained Jack's playin' and by the looks of these pictures, he's pretty happy!! Glad you enjoyed him. And that Floyd Miles Whooo Eeeeee! I just get a kick out of him.

Daniella I know of her and have been checking out her website for sometime now. But this will be the first time seeing her! "You must be" I'm thinking that's new? "Just like a woman" is that a cover or was that new too?

Believe it or not, there was not one seat or stool in the place... besides the toilet.

The sound was great... crowd was loud, but you could hear everything nicely up front... but the sound was better towards the back of the room.

Don't think I saw any tapers... the security was real tight and was barely letting people in with cameras.

Quick question - how do you add the writing to one of the corners of your photos (the Mike Lukacs copyright 2006)? I would be interested in learning how to do that with my pictures, but have absolutely no idea. Awesome photos and nice review by the way

Very nice Mikey...great review buddy!

Dylan's "Just Like A Woman" was played?..or is that a typo or something. That would be cool if they did play it. I also noticed Jack appeared to be playing a brand new G&L guitar with a full size humbucker in the neck position - I couldn't see if it had one in the bridge as well. Very cool! Looks like a beauty...

THanks Mike...

Eddie, Just Like A Woman was played, it's on the setlist... I don't know if it's a Dylan tune or not though.

Unless someone other than dylan wrote "just like a woman"--then should we assume it can only be THAT song--nice cover--any other thoughts on this???!

I'm not sure I remember it all that clearly, but it featured Gregg, and lots of Organ, and really mellow... almost a ballad, if I'm thinking of the right song.

Thanks for the great review & pictures, Mike. I like the B/W sepia effect!

I would LOVE to catch a night of this somewhere, but it doesnt seem to be in the cards for me. I can only hope for soe tapers at a venue or two!
