I've been impressed recently with Rolling Stone.............they seem to have improved and gone back to where they used to be, with more in-depth and informative articles and interviews. A few years ago it seemed to be all Britney Spears and Christina Aguilara. Now I'm a bit confused because they recently rated Kanye West's "Late Registration" as record of the year for 2005. Hey, I'm on ABB fan and at heart a rock 'n' roller but I like to keep an open mind, alright? I'll listen to jazz or blues or country on occasion. So, I picked up "Late Registration" on RS' recommendation. First rap CD I ever bought. I gotta say I don't quite get it. Now I will say there is some listenable, nice stuff on here. But..........RECORD OF THE YEAR??? Maybe I'm old (51), maybe I'm out of touch.........sorry, RS, I don't get it. RECORD OF THE YEAR = rapping/over drum machine/synth/+recorded background vocals?? Over all the great MUSIC out there??

I am interested in any and all opinions. Please dont' say "told ya so" or "why'd you ever buy it?"..........my open mind has turned me on to a lot of great stuff since I was a little kid. And one more thing..........why is it OK for a black artist to say "nigga" over and over again.........but I can either lose my job or be labeled a racist for the same (or both). (Yes, I'm white).

i have two younger brothers and growing up they fought each other constantly - i used psychological mind control to keep them in check. but if anyone else on the block tried to mess with da crew, we'd circle the wagons and take no prisoners.

same with the hip-hop use of the n word...we honkys ain't in the club. but i WILL laugh my ass off watching the boondocks on adult swim.

JFunk, just curious. What makes you want to puke? The fact that it's Kanye or the Passion/Christ imagry? Would it be more palatable if it was The Passion of Gregg Allman and he was wearing a thorny crown?

I think it is a very good album. Album of the year? I don't know.

Serouosly, not looking to argue, just curious what you find so distasteful.

I heard enough of him on the hurricane Katrina benefit. After hearing that and seeing the cover of RS I'll join jszfunk in puking too. They'd have to pry Gregg's face out of the spaghetti bowl to get him to pose for a picture like that.

yanknik: I'm a bit late replying, but that was a most interesting link you posted here about the white schoolteacher using "nigga" in class and getting suspended. Yet a black artist says it over and over and what is the result?? Record of the year, according to Rolling Stone! And I have yet to hear any backlash over him saying it. Now, what's wrong with this picture???

Some people might feel the same way about this slightly more subtle image:

Moid, I remember when I was kid and I saw that album about 3 years before I actually got into the Allman Brothers. I thought it was a pretty creepy picture, and everybody's expressions are pretty unfriendly. Berry has a couple Christlike aspects to his looks and his pose, but he's so glum and his apparel is so dark, there's little beyond the superficial resemblance to Jesus.

Kanye, on the other hand, is much more than "slightly" less subtle: crown of thorns, with blood running down his face; beatup face; coarse robe cloth thing. This is a complete reference to Christ's Passion, with Kanye identifying himself as Christ. Forgot to mention the cover title: "The Passion of Kanye West."

West should know better, because he made a lot of coin right off the bat by putting seemingly sincere gospel sentiments into his music, like Hammer and P. Diddy before him. Now I would guess he's just been using gospel to manipulate the herds. In this and with that cover, he's much more blasphemous than Berry's disrespectful goof.

So, I'm with jszfunk and Ozzy, except I don't feel like puking.

I love rap to death but Kanye's way too overrated for me. It doesn't help that he's a huge **** , crying in Rolling Stone recently that he deserves all 8 of his Grammys. I don't expect much from Rolling Stone for their lists anymore. They just praise all this overhyped new music like M.I.A. and Arctic Monkeys.

He's such an egomaniac. I actually like some of his tunes as sort of guilty pleasure's you hear on the radio. Here today gone tomorrow. I thought he was OK especially since he's definatly not trying to come off as a thug or a gangster but the whole Katrina comment and this rolling stone cover has me real sour on him latley.

This might be a comment for the WP but this guy is dressed like Jesus Christ on the cover of a major magazine and there are no Christian groups calling for his head on a stick or people trying to burn stuff down. 500 posts by the way..........
