This interview is in the August 2005 issue of Details Magazine. Their online edition doesn't have a link to it and I couldn't figure out how to copy and paste a scan of it on here. So I have tried to type it verbatim, but please forgive the typo's.

Gregg Allman, Classic Rock's most famous baby brother on drinking, decorating, and shooting himself in the foot.

Q: You just finished building a house. What was that like for you?
A: It'll probably be my last. It came out just gorgeous. We picked out all the stuff, color swatches are kind of a groove. At least it's better than going to the mall. Man, I hate going to the M-A-U-L. But furniture shopping, that I could do all day.

Q:You've been quoted as saying the term southern rock is redundant.
A:Well. the way I see it, there were four kings of rock and roll. Jerry Lee Lewis? That would be Louisianna. Little Richard? Macon, Georgia. Elvis Presley? Mississippi. And Charles Berry was from St. Louis. Therefore, I would say rock and roll was pretty damn well invented in the South.

Q:You got sober in 1995, after Willie Nelson inducted you in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
A:That was a wake-up call. I thought,"Man, here you are on international TV, accepting the Rock and Roll Hall of f***ing Fame award, and your ass is almost too drunk to get up on the stage and grab the damn thing." Willie looked at me and said,"You all right ?" And I said, "No Willie, I am not all right." And that kind of sobered me up, because I really respect Willie. I checked into rehab right after that.

Q: Didn't you originally want to be a doctor?
A: It was 1964 and the Beatles had been out about a year and a half. Everybody and their brother had a band. I thought, well hell, I just finished twelve years of military school, so I'll just go out and play a year or two and come back and go to med school. I was valedictorian- I could have done it. But the Army had their eye on me. I went in to see the school commander and said, "Sir, if you see me getting smaller, it's 'cause I'm leaving." He tried to give me some pep talk about becoming a leader, but I said, "I beg your pardon sir, but a leader of what? To go kill some more Asians ?"

Q: So you shot yourself in the foot to avoid the draft?
A: Boy did that hurt. We put my foot in a box full of sawdust so we wouldn't hurt anybody. When they got me to the hospital I was bleeding like crazy. I had taken speed earlier that day and drank about a quart of whiskey, so when they shot me with morphine, I was real f***ed up.

Q:That Allman And Woman album you recorded in 1977 with Cher. Why?
A:It all started out when we were singing a Smokey Robinson song in the shower. She was doing a record with Lenny Waronker at the time, and she said,"Well why don't you just produce it?" One thing came to another and she said, "Shit, why don't you just play on it?" Eventually I started singing on it too. But about halfway through we had a really big falling out, which led to a divorce. They didn't even print up that many. I suppose they're collector's items now.

Q: What's the one thing you still do that you shouldn't do?
A: I smoke a little pot. It relaxes me, especially after a gig. But it has to be real good. I can't go huffing and puffing. I need the one-hit wonder.

That was obvious. Not a big deal though. Although, it doesn't kill people, it really deaden peoples. Working with sound riggers who smoked pot their whole lives, they're tone deff. Can't even hear frequencies anymore. Hopefully it won't affect Gregg that way. But very cool once in awhile

Why would he need to be relaxed after the gig? I thought he mentioned he gets nervous before the gig... so to relax, wouldn't you smoke then?

Perhaps Gregg enjoys playing music sober?
ALso, if he's smoking really killer pot it might be hard to play high or even to move.

or perhaps he uses it as a sleep aid...

Personally speaking, it makes me stupid, so I prefer to not smoke before a show so I'll be on top of my game. Afterwards, I'm wide open!!

Interesting interview, thanks. On one hand I appreciate Gregg's candor on the other I'm a little disappointed to find out that he's 'sober' and still smokes weed. That senario just doesn't work out in most cases that I've seen, hopefully Gregg's situation will work out for the better.

I am shocked (!!!), I agree with Ozzypie, you cannot really be sober unless you go 100% clean, and he has made a big deal about sobriety these last 10 years. HOWEVER, for purely selfish reasons, I am glad to hear that he still takes the edge off with a hit now and again. I think it keeps him on the same level as the majority of us, maybe stimulates some creativity. Most importantly, it has not led to him falling off the wagon with coke, or heroin, or heavy booze. Hopefully, he can handle it. I also did not know he was a valedictorian.

My opinion: I know a lot of people who have given up alcohol who partake of a little pot now and then. I myself see no hypocrisy in that. There is a world of difference between the two substances and their effects.

(Opinion continues) Marijuana is a natural plant given to us by the creator himself. Its effect lasts for a few hours and there is no hangover. In my own experience marijuana is non-addictive. God knows we (my fellow partakers and I) go through dry spells where we can't even find any. During those periods, I've never seen anyone climbing walls or cruising the streets at 3:00AM looking for a fix.

I ceased being a slave to alcohol over five years ago. I hadn't smoked any pot for many years before that. It was during a trip to the Beacon a couple of years ago that a fellow peach-head re-turned me on to the herb. I found its effects to be relaxing as opposed to creating an obnoxious, slurring @sshole the way that booze does.

I have found that marijuana actually makes me pensive at times. I am not the stereotypical Cheech and Chong stoner. I have actually had thoughts and solutions to problems occur to me while I've been stoned.

As far as musical creation, let me offer this. Marijuana can effect your immediate short term memory. It wouldn't be a great idea to go on-stage stoned, as you just might forget some of your repertoire. But on the other hand, I have discovered (invented?) new licks while high that I might not have discovered otherwise.

I'm not endorsing pot for anybody else at all. It's just a substance that works well for me.
me.

In all things, moderation. To each his own.

I agree with Rusty. I am more philosophical and deep when I have a buzz. At the same time, my sense of humor is tweeked. I still think, and will always think, that pot is less dangerous than alcohol.

The Creator also gave us coca and poppy plants and used wine to symbolize his Spirit. I don't really disagree with what you're saying, I just used to use 'the Creator' line myself when I was rationalizing my own usage, lol. Like you said, to each his own,all things in moderation and I'll add live and let live.

Good point on the poppy plants, ozzypie.

And I use the wine and Jesus references all the time. Jesus' first miracle was turning water to wine, which showed he liked to have a good time and party. Then he blessed the wine at the last supper. I always contend, if you knew you were about to be marched up to Calvary and be nailed to a cross, wouldn't you want a little something to take the egde off?

Gregg (or anybody else) couldn't keep up if they were altered on-stage. No way to stay creative, keep up with the rest of the band without a sharp mind. On the other hand, how you gonna' deal with the adreneline when you come off stage? To each, his own, but my views parallel BDOB. If I've offended any of you by turning down your good intentions, well that's why. For me, at my advanced years, it's for when all my responsibilities for the day are fulfilled, and it's time to relax for the evening.

Nice take on the "Four Horsemen of Rock and Roll" too!

And as to the sound crew being tone deaf, it's probably all the years of loud music. At least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

For most people an occasional drink--or even a daily drink--will not have any negative impact. For someone with a history of substance abuse like Gregg Allman—a reported 25 trips to rehab—any kind of substance can trigger a relapse, particularly if there is a crisis. Substance abusers always think they can handle it but their own history proves them wrong. This is true for Dickey Betts and alcohol as he also doesn’t have a history of being able to handle it. Relaxing or taking the edge off with a substance is not a good idea for any former substance abuser.
