I'm pasting these comments by a gentleman named Clay Pelland from the Dickey Betts website. I don't know what to make of them, but disturbing if true.

Duane never wanted Gregg in the band to start with, and he never trusted Butch.
It's certinally interesting in how things have turned out. I often wonder what Duane
and Berry would say about all the goings on's over the last ten or so years?

Hi Stephen, No offence taken what so ever. I kinda figured that would raise an eyebrow or two. And I never would have said it if I didn't think it to be true either.

Through the music I've been lucky enough to meet and become friends with several people within the extreme inner circle of the original band, and even the Hour Glass. And from that have been told some amazing stuff, about all of them, some of it I've read in print and some of it I've never seen anywhere. As far as Gregg goes, Duane was having serious doubts about being in another band with his brother. He doubted Gregg's ability to give it everything he had, this based on past experience. It was through Jerry Wexler and Phil Waldens instistance that Gregg be called to join the band. They told Duane that without a singer it would never work. So Gregg becomes the last member. As far as Butch goes, again, just little things that people have said that were close friends with Duane. People I trust.

A little side note on Gregg joining the band. In January he did a rockline radio interview where he said that he hitchhiked from San Bernardino California to Jacksonville to join the band, where in fact Phil Walden sent him the ticket and Kim Payne put him on the plane, to Macon not Jacksonville. By the time Gregg showed up they had already moved to Macon. Then Kim rode his bike from LA to Macon a couple of weeks later.

It is true. Being part of the same circle of some of the folks, I vouch for the words here.

I'm not part of any circle, so I don't know squat. I don't understand what the disturbing part might be. Please explain.

What do you say about this?

I would agree and say Clay Pelland is a gentleman.

I would also say he knows alot about the history of the band and that he has shared a ton of ABB music with a whole bunch of people.

Also want to add here that Clay would not have posted anything he was asked not to repeat, and what was the intention to grab posts from Dickey's site and repeat them here anyway? Just for the sake of starting a stir? I don't believe it will work.

Like finsky said, the truth sometimes hurts, and adding on to that, the truth always comes out at some point as well.

I've got a book here called The Allman Brothers Band - A Biography in Words and PIctures by Tom Nolan. Here's what it says about Gregg joining the band.

The remaining member of the ABB was still lingering in Los Angeles, writing songs as therapy for an unhappy love affair and feeling very lonely.

Gregg Allman: "Just as I was about to put the gun to my head, the phone rang. It was a Sundy morning, the first Sunday before March 23, 1969, which was the date I got to Jacksonville . It was my brother. He said he had felt like a robot doing session work in Muscle Shoals, and that he'd decided to get a band together, to do some more traveling and playing around. Duane said, "Man, I've got these five dudes that play just as purty as you please. I've got a dynamite lead player named Dickey Betts -". 'Lead player', I said 'what the hell you need a lead player for?" 'Well, he says, 'bay bruh' - that's what he called me, that's a black Southern term short for baby brother - 'we goin' have two lead players. And I got two drummers'. I thought that was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard. I said 'Oh you mean one's playing congas.' He says 'No, we got two full sets of traps.' He says, 'The cats love to play, but they only sing a little bit, and there's not a whole lotta writin' goin' on. So, he says, 'come and sing, and write, and round it all up and send it in some direction.'

I'm pretty sure that came from a 1977 Jim Ladd interview. The same interview where he said he had been clean of herion for three years.

The actual date of that interview done was either 9.18.73 or 9.19.73.
It's track 9 on the 4th disc of the 12.31.73 Captskipper remaster.

Some people don't like to think of a cohesive band like the ABB to have such 'tension', maybe?

I was shocked by it on the Dickey forum, but it made sense.

When I first moved to Reading after graduation I made some new friends in my new home town. I became very close friends with one guy who was a kindred spirit in terms of musical likes etc etc. One thing that used to piss me off a bit was that his younger sister was always hanging around and getting in the way . . . I used to resent that and at times wished she wasn't around . . . she is now my wife of 25 years and I'm now very glad she hung around.

Clay . . . you are the best man, I am privileged to consider you a friend even though we have never met, thank you for sharing some of your intimate knowlege of the band, it is always a pleasure to read such interesting information . . . it's a shame that some other people are just too stupid to be able to read things and take them in the correct context.

Peace, Colin.

Clay and I have very different world views but I would ask for and take his advice if I needed advice. I can't imagine anyone outside this band stirring up more that the band has already stirred up.

Harvey how did you graduate without knowing how to read?

This website amazes me.

Hmmmm.

Thinking about it, I would also ask for and take Clay's money if I needed money. But I would ask for advice first. :-)

Brilliant post there Wearly. Sounds to me as if you are already more than a little disturbed.

All things considered, for his knowlege, Clay is extremely discreet.

If I worked for this band, I sure wouldn't own a fax machine.

LOL . . . the name of the town has always amused me too. When I first came here there was a biscuit factory on the edge of the town with a sign on the side that said . . .

HUNTLEY AND PALMER READING BISCUITS

I always wondered how to read a biscuit

He just likes to start fights because he's still biting his lip over why Dickey isn't in the band... some things people just can't get over. It would be nice someday if peace would be brought between dickey and Abb's forum.

Yeah, I don't know this Wearly person, and I never like for my first impression of someone to be negative, but I can't see any reason for that post other than as an attempt to stir up some sh*t around a guy that has a good reputation here.

Are you telling us that Clay said the original lineup might not have been a sextet of angels conceived in Heaven and dropped here for our entertainment? Did Clay say that these were adult human beings with their own histories and opinions and preferences and desires, and they lacked the Swiss engineering to make sure they all ran perfectly together? That perhaps Duane's original vision of the band did not include Gregg, and Gregg's invitation was spawned by recommendations from professional associates? Advice that Duane accepted, which as we all know led to a lineup with a brilliant (though regrettably short) run?

How dare Clay spread such wild and viscious rumours.

I'll just add that over the years Gregg has shown the music world that he's an accomplished writer, keyboad & guitar player, and great singer. His contributions to the band are substantial. His efforts reflect dedication to the band that carries Duane's and Gregg's name.
