i lost a good friend of mine this last saturday in Iraq. he lived in westchester, NY and i know some of you live around here so you might have heard about it. his name was Kevin Cuming he was driving a HumV in Baghdad when it got hit with a rocket propelled grenade. he was the only death as the other soldiers in the car were seriously injured. he was a good friend of mine and i know it sounds cliche, but one of the nicest kids you would have ever had the pleasure of knowing. the worst part about this is he enlisted in the Army as a cook but got transfered to front line Infantry because a seperate corporation took over the food distribution. Kevin Cuming, dead at 22 a month and a half before his 23rd birthday, all for nothing.

then today i get a call at work from my mother telling me to go to my uncle's house because his blood pressure is 50/20 and he's going to pass away today or tomorrow. its no surprise because he's an old man who's had alzheimers for a year or so and contracted a respiratory infection a couple weeks ago. he's lived through the day but the doctor told us that his veins are gone so any minute or hour now the worst is going to happen.
so it should be a trying next couple days.

Real sorry to hear about your friend. Sad and useless way to leave this world. I also hope your uncle finds the peace he deserves. My thoughts and prayers go top both of them.

suk0,

Very very sorry to hear about this. These certainly are difficult days in which we live.

You said...

quote:
" Kevin Cuming, dead at 22 a month and a half before his 23rd birthday, all for nothing."

I dont know if this will help at all, but our young men and women who have died over there have not died for nothing.

Because of our involvment in Afghanistan the Taliban was driven out...which resulted in dancing in the streets by the thankful citizens of that country.

Because of our involvment in Iraq Sadam Hussien and his evil thugs have been killed or caught, resulting in dancing in the streets as the Iraqi citizens brought down his statues and destroyed his images. And Saddam will shortly be tried by the Iraq's and executed.

Your good friend is nothing less than an American hero of the highest order.

Regards,

"D"

D28, i apologize. i should have been a little more specific when i said that. i meant because he enlisted as a cook and was transfered to front line when the food distribution was bought out by a seperate corp.

It's one thing to die engaging the enemy, but when they are blind side attacked, then it's harder to deal with. I wish we'd get the hell on out of Iraq and let the locals handle their own affairs from now on.

God bless your friend suk0. Nothing I say can ease the pain of the loss, other than to know he is in God's hands now.

They cant "handle their own affairs" any more than those in Europe could with Hitler.

In Iraq the slightest peep would result in having some fingers chopped off, tongue cut out, or being thrown off of a 3 story building. In Afghanistan the people were in absolute fear as well.

The dancing in the streets by those citizens because of our being there speaks for itself, and our young men and women are heros.

BigDaveOnBass,

I just noticed that you said this...

quote:
"let the locals handle their own affairs from now on..

"From now on"

Somehow i missed that the 1st time. Sorry. I thought you were saying we should have "let the locals handle thier own affairs" period. Obviously...they couldnt. It was only our firepower and expertise that drove out the Taliban and Saddam.

Regarding leaving now or not, thats a legitimate debate. We have turned the running of the government over to the Iraq's, but right now the decision is that they arent ready yet for us to leave. I have heard that our stance is that if they say to us "Leave, now", we will. If thats true, then they dont want us to leave yet.

It bothers me every time I hear of someone dying over there, but I still think of this as a 100% noble and just cause. I know that others disagree.

Regards,

"D"

suk0,

So very sorry to hear of loss of your friend and uncle. Do know my thoughts and prayers go out to you, your family, your friend's friends and family and to all the guys in his unit.

To BigDaveonBass and D28guy,

If you two want to discuss politics that's fine, but perhaps it might be best to take it over to the "Whipping Post", as it's kind of tacky to do it here when a suk0 is merely looking for some comfort after sustaining two tragic losses.

I'd just as soon let it drop. I only brought it up originally because I thought it might bring some comfort to know that Scotts friend was over there for an extremely noble and just cause.

I have no desire to get into any extended debate about it.

The above is one of the most ignorant statements I ever heard in my life.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland engaged this little abomination for three whole years while he ran riot through Europe ON OUR OWN

Peace and comfort to you and your family, suk0. This is not the place to debate the war in Iraq, but it is a tragic loss.

If I had to guess, this is what I think AlanS is objecting to: it sounds like you're saying America won WWII by itself, which (obviously not to belittle the effort made by American soldiers) is not how it went. I can see why someone in Europe would feel like this comment belittled the efforts made by the British and other Europeans in the war. While But I'll let him answer it, that's just my guess. And I imagine the "everybody should be thanking us" tone of your post won't help matters.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------

Thanks for writing this Marley. If anyone was offended ,It was not intended, the efforts of The Americans in Europe was massive. All I was asking for was a little credit for brave Europeans ( not just British. Underground fighters on mainland Europe were among the bravest of the whole war)
Also I have heartheld sympathy for anyone or there families who have to go through a tragedy in a current conflict also, I don't remember making any comments about Iraq or Afghanistan although 66 British soldiers have died there as well as many of their American comrades.
Anyway I hope you'll have noticed that Britain has been Americas number one allies for many years
