Hey now-
I was wondering if anyone here "in the know" can tell me whether/not "blue sky" is just not going to be performed since no more Betts? I just love that tune and think it should live in in ABB even though no more Dickey.

That reminded me that when Dickey Betts played @ the tractor tavern in Seattle a couple of years ago one of my buddies commented to him after the gig that he thought his playing put warren to shame-meaning it as a complement. Dickey was kind of walking by, and he suddenly stopped and spun around and emphatically said "hey man, warren f---ing rips." Then he turned back around to where he was going after making his point. Anyway, we all thought that was a classic moment and to me it said alot about Dickey to say what he did.

No, it's not going to be played. Blue Sky, like Ramblin' Man and everything else Dickey sang, has been out of the setlist since May of 2000. The band did actually throw in kind of a Blue Sky jam into the back half of Mountain Jam once last summer (maybe twice), and that was cool. I'd guess that was Warren's nod to Dickey.

And yes, that's typical Dickey. He and Warren continue to speak well of each other (and he only says nice things about Derek as well).

Dickey, Warren, and Derek should make a band.

Warren and Neil Young should make an acoustic project

Hey thanks for the info and opinions, you guys. Some of you guys know EVERYTHING there is to know about all of the good people ever associated w/ABB so your knowledge means alot to me. I guess since I'm a pacific northwest born and bred my exposure to ABB really is limited as opposed to other parts of the country. I've only been lucky enough to see the band in Boise in about '97 and the recent Gorge show.

Was gonna see the show in Pullman, WA. a few years back when the gig got cancelled as welll as the remainder of that west coast swing. It actually was interesting because we'd heard the rumors of some certain band members getting into it, but at the arena in pullman we walked by the tour bus and lo and behold Warren was there sitting around with a guitar in his hands and it kinda looked as if he was waiting for the rest of the band to appear so he could get down to business. that's when i first realized that this guy is SERIOUS and not neccessarially a rocker for the fame and glamour and other crap.

And I guess I'll hear D. Betts & Great Southern from the cleveland '04 instant live of theirs if i ever happen to get the ABB 6 pack delivered here. Just waitin', but I sure like his setlist-little martha and jessica and so many killer tunes. should be nice to hear.

Thanks again for the replies to the post.

Since we are on the subject - who should play with whom? I asked this once before - Does anyone believe it is possible/likely that The Dead and ABB will tour/play together. They certainly have some common bonds.

With WH playing with The Dead, it has given us a glimpse at what the merging of the two bands would sound like. Personally, I would LOVE to see this happen. However, the difficult question would be - Which band would open?

Well, as you know, the Dead and ABB shared the bill at the Gorge on July 3rd. The Dead, rightfully so, closed the night out. Both bands played pretty well, each having their moments of greatness and also some lesser moments.

Unfortunately, just having Warren in the band has greatly taken away from the Dead sound. I can only imagine that merging more members would completely ruin both bands.

Warren and the rest of the ABB are tremendous together. As was the Dead...last tour. Warren just doesn't belong in the Dead, his too dominant ABB sound doesn't mesh well with the Dead sound.

I'd love to see a co-headlining tour with the two. Perhaps even a not to frequent sit in of one member with the other band. But they should be kept seperate otherwise.

Just my opinion.

The two bands can merge:

ABB

Gregg
Butch
Jaimoe
Marc
Warren
Oteil
Derek

Dead

Bobby
Phil
Warren
Jimmy
Jeff
Mickey
Bill

Merge em' and you get:

Butch, Bill, and Marc in the percussion section (sorry Jaimoe and Mickey)
Gregg on organ and Jeff on keyboard
Oteil on bass (sorry Phil...you can guest)
Derek, Warren, and Jimmy on guitar (sorry Bobby...you can guest too...actually you cant)

Well don't forget it was Dickey who discovered Warren - and, for that matter, Matt Abst as well. By the way, all of the Betts songs are on the new Instant Live CD and most of them are VERY good; however, it was recorded during the FIRST WEEK of their tour so the rest of the band is not quite in synch yet. He opens with a very interesting rendition of Little Martha which, even he admitted, needed some work. I'd love to have heard it at the end of the tour...

What would they play?

Three guitars... it'd have to be Dead tunes or Skynyrd tunes.

Yeah Warren could really use a side gig that he could do between The Dead, ABB, Mule and solo acoustic shows. He really could use the work - that slacker!

why?? [young sucks]
well i guess so warren can do something he has done for alot of other musicians==make neil young alot of money then get none of the credit or maybe haynes could try to make young's songs/lyrics better & easier to understand[since warren is a great songwriter& singer]

just my opinion... don't take it too seriously cuz i know neil young has made more $$money$$ then i will ever dream of & he has had a good life, i just don't like young!!

Because Warren's obviously a Neil Young fan.

Has Blue Sky ever been covered by anyone else of note? I just can't imagine anyone but Dickey doing that song. It wouldn't sound right (as is the case with most of Dickey's songs).

Phil Lesh and Friends have played it with and without Dickey Sitting in.

The night Dickey sat in, Jimmy herring was in heaven.

as jimmy said "dickey and duane are the reason I picked up
the guitar"

Dickey said he had a blast too.

Peace
John
