Friends,

From Jamband.com and Oteil:

quote:
Shifting back to the MSG show, the Allman Brothers have such a deep catalog of songs. How are you deciding on the nightís setlist? For me at least, it seems like we worked backwards. You put down the songs that you absolutely have to play first. Thereís a stable of songs that have to be done. If youíre only going to do one show, you canít leave them out, and thereís a lot of them. So it depends on how many of those there are before we can start playing around. We only have so much time.

So, I'm thinking a 3-hour show. Average song length of 8 minutes (combo of shorter songs, long jams and time in between songs), I'm think the set list will be 20 - 25 songs. 10 first set. 10 second set. 3 encore.

So .... what are the songs that make the set list? We can get into the order of the set list later, but wondering what you think makes it as a staple song and what songs would you that might not be a staple but you think they'll play.

Bet it will be pretty similar to the final show, drawing mostly from the first 4 albums, naturally.

Always loved the jazz swing in some of their instrumentals, like I-Ilness, Kinda Bird, JJís Alley - as Scott Freeman wrote about Kinda Bird in his xclnt book Midnight Riders, ďrock bands are simply not supposed to be able to play jazz with a feeling this nimble & full of swingĒ

Whatever They Play, W/Those Musicians Itíll Be The Bomb

Agreed about similar to last show. 26 songs listed over 3 sets that night. Under the 3 hours/8 min. per song theory, that means 3 songs are out...

Jessica, which was not played the last night will 100% be in the show on 3/10 (Chuck)...that means another has to go.

Schoolgirl
Sky is crying
and...?????

If that's the plan, that means no:
Stormy Monday
Les Brers
Done Somebody Wrong
Come & Go Blues
Worried Down with the Blues
Leave my Blues at Home
Come on in my Kitchen
Don't Keep me Wonderin'
Stand Back
True Gravity
Desdemona
Woman Across the River
etal.

It should be a fantastic show no matter which songs they select. I wouldn't want to be in charge of saying which ones are in and which ones are out.

Has anyone thought, for one moment, as a homage to Dickey, Ramblin' Man might be played?

Without Gregg and Butch there, I actually wouldn't be surprised at all if they played it.

Just as the band hit following Duaneís accident, it Really hit on the last song Berry Oakley played on - Ramblin Man

Dickey is so identified w/it - unless Berry Duane Oakley could be there to play his dadís part on his farewell song - which he wonít be unfortunately w/Allman-Betts on the west coast - I kinda doubt it personally - but who knows

considering the personnel in the group, I think 6 dickey songs make the list and there are 23 that make the cut. good coverage of the players, the eras and the styles of tunes.

betts:
jessica, liz reed, blue sky, southbound, revival, no one to run with

gregg songs:
dream, midnight rider, whipping post, ain't wastin time no more, black hearted woman, stand back, melissa

abb songs:
mountain jam, hot lanta, DWYNM/AMCTB

abb cover songs:
statesboro, trouble no more, one way out, done somebody wrong, you don't love me, stormy monday

Les Brers would be the perfect opener. That slow rise of sound as The Brothers get back on their feet 5 years and two deaths later, then launch into the most badass show anybody has ever heard.

Hoping the 90s and 00s aren't ignored, even though the first 5 albums will be the focus. Would love to hear True Gravity, End of the Line, Desdemona, High Cost of Low Living. At least a couple each from the Epic and HTN eras. Only playing the first 5 albums doesn't do justice to the impact Warren, Marc, Derek, Oteil had on the band and keeping the music alive from those eras too.

I canít resist a troll comment here.

Dusk til Dawn
Egypt.
Bag End
Instrumental Illness
Iím only half joking about Egypt, that was one hot tune when they first started playing it in Ď05

In seriousness though I would hope they would stick to mostly original ABB tunes and the old blues covers that became staples for them.

I loved hearing them do Into the Mystic and Manic Depression etc.. but for this show I think honoring the compositions of Gregg and Dickey is the way to go.

I agree, it would be overlooking the importance of Warren to the brotherhood if they didnít play at least one of his. Soulshine will probably find its way into a set list but my personal choice would be Rockiní Horse so you can get a little nod to Allen Woody in there too.
The extended version of Rockiní Horse with the funky intro and the E major jam towards the end also symbolizes the contributions of the Youngbloods of the group to me.

The setlist for the last show was almost 100% from the first four albums (plus Southbound, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, High Cost of Low Living and The Sky Is Crying). And the two blues songs were probably included mostly so Warren could sing and Gregg could take a break. I think this is going to be broadly similar. They'll play Jessica and probably Southbound with Chuck - he also guested a bunch of times on Mountain Jam in the band's later years, so I wouldn't be surprised if he plays that or Desdemona. They could also nod to Reese's career in some way.

I will be surprised if they play any of those, although a Les Brers intro/ DWYNM/ NMCTB would be good.

Little Martha over the PA at the end.

Based on Oteil's comments, I'm nevertheless going to wager that with Warren and Derek calling the shots and only Jaimoe to pull back the reigns, we're going to see at least one lesser known instrumental and 3-4 deeper tracks.

Tributes to the fallen band member is a nice thought. I hope Chuck does more than a song or two
as has been suggested. Ramblin, Come & go, Soundbound are natural Chuck songs an give kudos
to Dickey. Gregg's vocals are nearly impossible to replace an shame if Lamar is not involved.
Could it be the night of a lot of instrumentals with a just a few songs with a band member singing?

Last (3rd) set: Les Brers, Dreams, Whipping Post, Trouble No More at close to an hour

Everybody has their faves, but for a show honoring 50 years, that seems like such a deep cut, even for HTN. If they were going to do anything from HTN I would predict "High Cost".

And Chuck played on Desdemona a few times as a guest in 2001 before it was released (and maybe again later). Took that first keyboard solo. I'd love to see/hear it again.

Yeah, I see your point. It seems like Rockin Horse was never really a favorite of anyone's as an ABB tune.

It certainly seemed to be a favorite of Warren's!

This is a very interesting topic. I will definitely be wondering what the most unexpected selection is that they will roll out.
